Billy Donovan, Chandler Parsons Asked About Premarital Sex, BYU Honor Code (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03/24/11 03:02 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

In early March, BYU dismissed starting forward Brandon Davies from the team after he admitted to having premarital sex with his girlfriend, a violation of the school's honor code. A reporter reminded Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan and star player Chandler Parsons of the situation the night before the two teams square off in the Sweet 16.

Donovan was asked on Wednesday night about how difficult it would be to recruit to Florida if he had to tell the recruits that they couldn't have premarital sex.

"I'm not going to get into that. I mean, I don't know, Donovan said. "First of all, I don't really talk about any of that stuff, either. I'll pass on that one."

The reporter then turned to Parsons and asked: "How shocked were you when you found out that BYU had kicked one of its best players off the team for having premarital sex, and how many Gators would be left on the team if you had that rule?"

Parsons started to laugh and said "rules are rules." He also said that the team can't worry about that and it's none of his business.

The reporter achieved his goal--nationwide attention in what is really a forgettable event. He is a poor example of what journalism should be.

I thought that was a good example of what journalism should be.

How should asking unrelated questions intended to spark controversy true journalism? Please explain your philosophy on what journalism is in its truest form.

What a relevant question that was. If I was Billy I would've pulled a Drew Rosenhaus...next question.

If the reporter wanted to ask a tough question he should have asked Donovan how hard it would be to recruit kids to Florida if they had the academic standards that BYU has.

Donovan answered the question properly. BYU is BYU, and if a students chooses to attend then it's their responsibility to know and play by their rules.

Florida "student-athletes" wouldn't last with a one-at-a-time rule.

No premarital sex at BYU but after you're married, as many wives as you want!

Let's be fair. There is underground polygamy in Utah and some fringe groups openly practice it. The official position of the Mormon Church is monogamy and the vast majority of Mormons are monogamous.

Except that at BYU you don't have to not have sex, you just have to not admit it.

It's hard to see this coach get pounded with these questions. Coach Donavan was placed in a difficult position in front of the cameras. Stretching and contorting, reaching deep into his vocabulary in order to avoid splashing on the face of BYU a loaded comment.

This was first off a totally ridiculous question and the reporter should be fired for stupidity. Secondly, why is it such an important story that it made it to HP. You know, when I first started reading HP about 3 years ago it had a lot higher standards for the news it aggregated.

That "reporter" should be embarrassed to have asked such an idiotic question. Should be but I'm sure isn't.

Oh and BTW, Go Gators! Great game.

And what does that say about us?

The article was clearly labeled. WE read it despite the article. And then we cared enough to post.

Surely we are glad the question was asked?

He says-----blushing with embarrasment.

Actually, that's a good point, although in my own defense, I will say that the "teaser" headline on the main sports page made it sound much more sinister, like Donovan was being accused of something. As a Gator, I hadn't heard anything like that (and would be very out of character for him) so yes, I read. Then I was sucked in like watching a bad wreck.
