Chris Brown Apologizes For 'Good Morning America' Outburst

Chris Brown Good Morning America

First Posted: 03/24/11 08:45 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

Chris Brown had a bad morning on Tuesday. For that, he's very sorry.

The singer, who let out an emotional outburst backstage after a contentious interview on "Good Morning America," addressed his allegedly violent, window-smashing tirade on the BET music video countdown show, "106 & Park."

"First of all, I want to apologize to anybody who was startled in the office, or anybody who was offended or really looked, and [was] disappointed at my actions," Brown said on the show (via RadarOnline). "Because I'm disappointed in the way I acted."

"I felt like they told us this just so they could get us on the show so they can exploit me," Brown said. "So I took it very, very hard and I really kinda kept my composure throughout the whole interview, although you can see me upset, I kept my composure, I did my performance.

"And when I got back I just let off steam. I didn't physically hurt anyone, I didn't try to hurt anyone, I just wanted to release the anger that I had inside me because I felt that I worked so hard for this music and I felt like people kept just trying to take it away from me."

Brown's outburst came after repeated questioning by co-anchor Robin Roberts about the 2009 incident in which he inflicted a devastating beating on his then-girlfriend, Rihanna.

In a statement that followed the incident, Roberts said that she had a good relationship with Brown, was shocked by his outburst, and invited him back to the show.

Brown's new album, "F.A.M.E," was released this week, and industry insiders don't expect its sales to be hurt by the incident, projecting perhaps 300,000 copies to be moved in its first week. Sales should be buoyed by his top single, "Look At Me Now."

Chris Brown has be punished enough. How do you expect a person to change, when you sit there and want to see him at the bottom? Pretty sure the bible say to forgive. Everyone can change. That was horrible reporting by the way. He kept saying, I'm here to promote my album, but she kept pushing it and pushing it. No one should have something thrown in their face when they are progressing! Keep up with negative comments & stupid reporting skills, judge and you will be judged. Just remember that!

Anger expert Steven Stosny, Ph.D, believes that Chris’ anger is triggered by shame and that he was flooded with that feeling when his assault on Rihanna was brought up on GMA. “He was overwhelmed by feelings of shame, powerlessness and inadequacy,†he explains. â€He doesn’t know how to cope with these feelings still, so it comes out like a temper tantrum.â€

Stosny believes that because Chris feels shame, he is very treatable. He can learn a different way of behaving. “He violated his own values because he hurt someone he loved — Rihanna.â€

Unfortunately, Stosny points out, Chris’ childhood led him to make a connection between powerlessness and anger. He believes he felt powerless watching his stepfather attack his mother and that mad him angry as a child and frustrated because he couldn’t stop it. Now as an adult, when he feels powerless, he still responds with anger†But Stosny adds that he believes “Chris Brown doesn’t want to be an angry, violent person. He wants to be loved and be loving. He needs to go beyond traditional anger-management treatment and get more therapy,â€

A fourth therapist, Dr. Gilda Carle, of www.drgilda.com, believes Brown has made progress. “During his interview with Robin, Brown held it together and even controlled the direction of the interview — he was gentlemanly, but he was not able to sustain it,†she says. “There’s hope for him but he’s got to continue to work at this.

Yeah, that's nice. I am going to go ahead and believe my own eyes and ears. Did any of those doctors explain why Chris Brown continues to minimize what he did?
01:32 AM on 03/27/2011
He doesn't minimize it to lessen it but he tries to avoid speaking on it to avoid those feelings so he thinks an 'it's whatever' comment will stop the conversation.

Actions speak louder than words. When I see those actions (as opposed to those of a petulant 4th grader), I'll be ready and waiting.

Until that day comes, I sp.it in his general direction.

What about Chris Brown's short fuse, bad temper and violent actions have we not been privy to?

These two incidents (the Rhinna beating and his window breaking) are public displays of violence that we actually are aware of.

I can only imagine what other acts of rage and violence he has engaged in that we haven't found out about yet. You can be darn sure these aren't the only violent incidents.

Chris Brown needs to listen to "Im Sorry" by Brenda Lee more often. Like 24/7 !

Lemme make a real dumb intelligent post here , here we go lol

Nowadays making money is more important than saving face. Unfortunatly some of us give the industry something to hold over our heads so that they can make money from our actions.

Chris could have handled that another way but temper does what temper did and now he is at their mercy having to do an interview that he originallly did not want to do. It is not all his fault.

If mom(because clearly pop is not in the pic)had of disciplined him in the begining then maybe we would not be here talking about his actions. If the people that are much older than him that he surrounds himself with had of told him no man there is a better way to handle this then we would not be here now. He thinks that he is above the law and can do and say what ever he wants and he is playing in the industry’s hand to where he now is making them money.

Chris Brown is our Lyndsay Lohan. Black communities do not need this on top of what is already hendering our black youth and some adults

LMAO it is not all of his fault, my that's rich. Who's fault is it then? Is it Robin Roberts fault because she asked some questons he couldn't deal with? Please Chris needs to take a long hiatus and work on his anger problems. If he keeps his little antics up he won't have a career to worry about.

Agreed. People need to leave the black community out of Chris Brown's meltdown.
08:23 AM on 03/25/2011
how about we stop rewarding his bad behavior and not give him any more opportunities. the kids not that talented that we should have to put up with his BS antics! but you know the american press dumb as crap and twice as nasty!
09:06 AM on 03/25/2011
Why do you suggest "we" have to put up with his crap....looks to me like your enjoying it. How are "we" rewarding him? The press might be all you claim but your comment makes it sound like you fit right in. Ironic.

Crixus. When did you become an expert in the black community? I'm a black woman who didn't condone what R-Kelly or Chris Brown has done. My niece is a fan of Chris Brown's and since the incident I refuse to buy her any of his CD's or let her listen to his music. And as for R-Kelly, he should have been put in jail and his music isn't allowed to be played in my home. My bet is you'll make excuses for Charlie Sheen who's shot and beaten women. And Lindsay Lohan who is a brat who's parents didn't raise her properly. But I bet you'll make excuses for them. Oh the're on drugs and need help. What they've done is no different than Chris Brown. But the difference is when your white, people make excuses for you, and when you're black you're a thug and should be locked up. You're right about one thing though. We should support our own. With folks around like you, blacks would be locked up for littering! So here's one black person who doen't condone bad behavior from any race of people. And I know lots of black folk who feel the same as I do.

I am black and grew up in the inner city and Chris Brown is a thug and should be locked up. I agree with you that "thug" is code used by white folks, but Chris Brown has earned that title.

Lohan hand never beat someone like Brown did. She got more time than Brown did, even though he is violent and she is not. Her sentencing shows sexism in the justice system that Brown benefited from. DUI and coke are worse than beating someone black and blue and choking them? The fact is your claim to be against bias but you reek of sexism(no wonder why you make Brown into a victim and not Rihanna?)

Brown and had his advocates blaming Rihanna for him beater her. He been made into a vicitm by many hyopocritical people in comment sections on this site in a way the same people don't with Sheen. Sheen was fired. Brown never lost his record contract. Like you care about fair treatment.

Sheen did not act violent because of interviews, Brown did.

Your making excuses for Brown and twisting him into a "victim". It is a shame him beating a black woman does not envoke the false outrage that poor Brown who flips out because of interviews does with you.

And stop with the regurgitated Sheen shot somebody line, he said it was a accident and she did too. She never denied it and still after being married to John Travolta she never denied it.
