The Center for Public Integrity:

On Jan. 14, 2010, federal border patrol agents stopped two men driving a car through the border-crossing town of Columbus, New Mexico. Inside the vehicle was a cache of assault weapons, including AK-47s, Ruger .45-caliber handguns and pistols called "cop killers" because their ammunition can penetrate armor.

Middle school student in Indiana shoots another student on school grounds.

Did he do it without a gun? Was the gun registered? Was the owner of the gun the kid or someone else?

News on WGN TV 11:30 AM CDT.

I am glad that SYRIA, at least, practices effective gun control.

Otherwise, a lot of poor police officers might get hurt...

Yeah, and it's a good thing all those protesters in Egypt had guns or... oh, wait, they didn't have any guns did they. Gosh, it's almost like they managed to have an entire revolution without them.

If you don't count the military standing behind them, then you are correct.

RAND corp just finished a big study on medical marijuana.

one of the big findings:
the best way to put a dent in the profits and abilities of the mexican drug cartels would be to legalize marijuana in the US.

booyah.

and, and...
what was I saying?

I'm just surprised they reported it at all.

This is the same government we're supposed to trust to keep guns out of the hands of criminals? No thanks. Leave guns and drugs alone.....people will get both very easily.

Mexico needs to permit law abiding citizens (instead of only criminals, like today) to own guns, and the US needs to stop bothering law abiding citizens who want to put drugs into their own bodies.

BOTH countries would be a LOT better off...
05:10 PM on 03/24/2011
Some how I don't see increasing the number of guns floating around Mexico as making the situation better.

No, it's SO much better for the lawful citizens to be slaughtered systematically by the cartels.

Maybe we could get the ex Ambassador to Mexico, Pascual to comment, after all it was he who criticised Mexico for its lack of co-ordination in law enforcement operations.

I wonder if the Federal thugs had probable cause to search that car?
02:52 PM on 03/24/2011
Who needs probable cause when you can trick or threaten your subjects into giving consent???

Exactly. Which is why EVERY citizen ought to carry a hidden watch or pen video camera at all times.

Customs & Border Protection Officers have broad authority to search people, conveyances, and materials crossing the border, in both directions. Probable Cause is NOT required!

NOWHERE in the article did it say they were CROSSING the border.
03:42 PM on 03/24/2011
Border Patrol has claimed that they can set up checkpoints up to 100 miles within int'l borders and search without warrants. They are boarding buses in New York and searching everybody on board.

They are way out of line and absolutely trampling the constitution.

Geee, thanks ATF, now thousands of assult weapons are in the hands of the cartels...now that's what I call gun control!
02:42 PM on 03/24/2011
This business with Operation gunrunner is sickening. There should be Congressional hearings. The acting Director of the ATF should be fired, and Holder needs to step up and deal with this since the ATF is under his jurisdiction.

Politicians and the alphabet agencies love guns, as long as they control them.

I support defunding the BATF, laying everyone off and prosecution of the supervisory agents in charge of Gunrunner. These guys are jack booted thugs that trample the rights of all Americans.

What the article fails to make clear is that many of the US dealers involved not only did their DD by contacting the ATF, they actually questioned the ATF on whether they should sell the guns to the straw buyers. Of course someone trying to purchase eight AR15s at once is suspect and in many cases the dealers did not want their business but in every case they were told by the ATF to complete the transaction for the sake of the sting. Then when all is said and done the legal US dealers, who did their best to keep these weapons out of the hands of the cartels, were blamed for selling the traced weapons.

Yep..The BATF is full damage control...And like all bureaucrats, they will lie, twist the truth and throw any civilian under the bus to protect themselves.

Defund the BATF and prosecute the supervisory agents in charge.

Good, I am glad it is ailing....becasue the left doesn't know where to stop once again......instead of just trying to solve a problem they want this as an opportunity to take away guns for those law abiding citizens as well
02:26 PM on 03/24/2011
I'm sick of people continually saying that their guns will be taken away. Won't happen so quit obsessing. And that really isn't what this article was addressing. But if you ask me too many guns get into the hands of the wrong people. Yes you have the right arms but who are you arming yourself against. Guess that it is a matter of just in case. And I'm not talking about guns used for hunting.

I know what the people of Libya and Syria would be arming themselves against.

If they could...
05:05 PM on 03/24/2011
Yeh expalin that to the citizen in Louisianna that had their guns taken away during Katrina. I am arming myself against the same thing that girl in Florida just armed herself against. Becasue you get rid of guns do you think people will start breaking into homes to stab, rape, choke, beat? When they do they will get a hollow point 9mm right between the eyes....serves them right period.

90% of all guns used in crime in the Toronto area can be traced to Virginia or Kentucky and 100% of all guns murders.

And which nether region of your anil orifice did you extract those made up numbers from?
02:46 PM on 03/24/2011
yep, i love our gun laws in KY, we have very ltlle crime unless its blk on blk, Id like to see more on the streets
04:48 PM on 03/24/2011
Across the country it's about 10-15% less in origins but in the Toronto area those numbers are pretty constant, and the numbers reflect intra-Jamaican/ Carribean drug and gang related incidents. All guns are legal to begin with, it's the underground distribution that is illegal. In 2008 alone 490 or 70% of guns seized were traceable to the US and another 580 were caught at the border. One man was paid $2,000.00 to smuggle in 5 handguns hidden in the gas tank......but he was from Wisconsin. Handguns are available here legally but under very specific conditions as in target, sport or other legal commercial security activities and as a relative number, the % households with A gun here aren't that different. But being a more of rural/hunting society they're long guns.

We have almost 10% unemployment yet the Obama Administation is cutting 47,000 troops from the Army and Marines. Call me crazy but as our Southern border stands wide open this seems stupid, irrational and even treasonous.
How about spending some of that Stimulus money on national security instead of recycling it through the unions and back to the Democratic Party.
01:36 PM on 03/25/2011
We have to make sure future Democrats can easily cross the border.
