Michele Bachmann Still Planning On Doing Some President Stuff, Probably
Since the end of the 2010 election cycle, Michele Bachmann -- whose homeland may have been destroyed by capitalism -- has been exploring all available avenues to keep her profile high. Originally, she had hoped to take a leadership role in the House GOP, but when that didn't pan out, she adopted the Tea Party as her personal cause, forming a caucus under the Tea Party banner and giving an eyes-askance State of the Union response on their behalf.
But how are all the cool kids in the GOP staying in the news? They're all running for president, you say? Fine, Michele Bachmann will also make some presidential noises, for the teevee cameras. And today, CNN has some exclusive news pertaining to Bachmann's presidential bid:
CNN has exclusively learned that Rep. Michele Bachmann will form a presidential exploratory committee. The Minnesota Republican plans to file papers for the committee in early June, with an announcement likely around that same time. But a source close to the congresswoman said that Bachmann could form the exploratory committee even earlier than June so that she could participate in early Republican presidential debates.
Bachmann is said to be staffing up in Iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina, which is something else you are supposed to do when you "test the waters" of a presidential bid. But this comes hard on the heels of an ABC News report in which Bachmann herself explains what she's doing:
"I'm in for 2012 in that I want to be a part of the conversation in making sure that President Obama only serves one term, not two, because I want to make sure that we get someone who's going to be making the country work again. That's what I'm in for," Bachmann said."But I haven't made a decision yet to announce, obviously, if I'm a candidate or not, but I'm in for the conversation."
Here Bachmann essentially gives away the game, suggesting that she's more interested in staying "in the conversation" -- that is, in boosting her own profile. In terms of a personal branding strategy, it's a pretty good one. Whether or not we should take this seriously as anything more than a vanity run for office, however, is another matter entirely.
But whatever, breaking: At some point, June will come, and Michele Bachmann will be there, doing things, unless she does them even earlier.
