$161 million donated to one of the wealthiest nations on the Planet who won't even help their own after this much time has elapsed?

You're kidding.

No.

I do not.

Feed a hungry kid in your own hometown while the Emperor of Japan makes a tiny appearance and the government bails out business instead of its own.

Sounds like the church of Rome.

To the best of my understanding the Japanese government is at this very moment spending billions to manipulate currency markets in favor of the Yen as a result of the upheaval. Further, they have set aside 500 billion equivalent US$ for "aid and support" bailout funds for corporations, banks and the Japanese market in financial services. I want people to think twice before donating their money to Japanese relief efforts while the Japanese government is systematically expoiting an opportunity to enrich the corporate ruling class while lagging in the relief of a million homeless citizens. I realize your benevolence is in no way diminished by the actions of the Japanese government but a message needs to be sent that the ruling class is being watched and their behavior is not encouraging. It is wrong for the Japanese government to shower money on the unaffected wealthy while pinching pennies on the victims. Further, I want people to ask themselves if these internet catastrophe donation programs actually help struggling victims or simply fund future operations of NGO's like the Red Cross. It's not enough that they make you feel good because you make a donation. Once the shock is over and these people try to rebuild they will need help but the NGO's won't be there and your donation won't be there.

I didn't even have to "think twice".

Thanks for your sane piece.

The American Red Cross has 65% of all donations for Japan due to its overwhelming marketing/advertising effort which I've called "predatory fund raising". The Japan Red Cross operates over 100 hospitals and 200 clinics in Japan, is government funded, and initially stated it did not want money/materials/volunteers. What then is the point of the American Red Cross fund raising? It had embarrassing "spare change" after 9/11, Katrina, the 2004 Asia Tsunami, Haiti, the San Francisco/Loma Prieta Quake, Hurricane Mitch, etc. etc. What will they do with the earmarked Japan money? Their brand and ads get them the money. Now will they spend it all wisely. I truly hope so but they have to give more energy and money to programs and not their organizational ego on the fund raising side.
