In the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, American soldiers are mounting relief efforts, bringing supplies to Japanese communities affected by the disaster.

Known as Operation Tomodachi after the Japanese word for "friend", U.S. service members are reaching remote areas via helicopter, delivering food, water, blankets and other necessities.

Thirty-one helicopters, launched from offshore ships, are involved in the operation, NBC Nightly News reports.
