Facebook Movie Rentals Warner Bros

In a move that signals new frontiers for both Facebook and content creators, Warner Bros. has announced it will be making five new, high-profile movie titles available for rental and streaming via Facebook.

In early march, the Hollywood studio said it would begin testing digital movie rentals via Facebook, becoming the first to do so, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

"The Dark Knight" was the first title to be offered on Facebook. Warner Bros. said in a statement that it will "expand its test offering of movies for rental through Warner Bros. Entertainment's Facebook Movie Pages" with "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," "Inception," "Life as We Know It" and "Yogi Bear," all of which were available starting at 10PM PT March 27.

Renting the movies costs around 40 Facebook Credits (approximately $4) each and users can watch the titles as frequently as they'd like during the 48-hour rental period. Rentals are available from the movies' official Facebook Pages.

$4 for a rental is expensive. And "Facebook credits" sounds like play money. I don't feel comfortable giving my credit card number to a social networking site whose issues with respecting the information of its users make the news on a regular basis. Also it doesn't beat Netflix.

Really, 4 bucks to watch one movie, when Netflix is 8 bucks a month for unlimited streaming and controlled home delivery. Hmm no wonder the Corporate Overlordz don't want us educated anymore, basic arithmetic is your friend.

Call me a luddite, if you want, but I'm inclined to stick with sites that "work" and are reasonably secure. For movies, I like Netflix. For books, Amazon. And for current TV shows I will never admit to watching -- farewell "The Cape", "happy town" and "Human Target" -- hulu is just too wonderful. As far as Facebook is concerned... ummm... the jury is out on just how safe you can be there (I base this on the fact that -- every other week there's a new tip or two or three to remedy a weakness). As for credits, I've no clue on how to accumulate these, but if it has to do with imaginary places (which are NOT the Huffington Post), you can count me out.

iTunes offers more cheaper, and there are even better services than that available. Try harder, Facebook.

Facebook's network can barely handle its regular traffic. Video streaming? Good luck!

Its probably not served by their network. Sounds like it's an embedded player from WB.

To anyone thinking about buying FB credits: You should know that FB stores your card and/or Paypal info so that any future purchases go through at the touch of a button. Be especially careful if you buy something for someone else on their account. Prepaid gift cards are much safer.

Sorry- I can get streaming video from Netflix, or get a dvd in the mail, or stop on the way home at a Redbox all for cheaper. My personal favorite is still the library where I can check out a DVD for 3 nights for FREE! and they're now carrying Blu-ray as well!
