Libya Woman Who Claimed She Was Raped Being Held Hostage At Gaddafi's Headquarters: Report

Libya Women Protest

By MAGGIE MICHAEL   03/28/11 10:27 AM ET   AP

CAIRO -- Parents of a Libyan woman who claimed she was detained by Moammar Gadhafi's troops and later gang raped said in interviews aired Monday that their daughter is being held hostage at the Libyan leader's compound in Tripoli.

Iman al-Obeidi made headlines when she rushed distraught into a Tripoli hotel on Saturday, seeking to tell foreign reporters about her rape. She was tackled by waitresses and government minders and dragged away from the site in an ensuing melee.

In interviews broadcast Monday on satellite Al-Jazeera Television, al-Obeidi's parents countered government claims that their daughter had been set free after the hotel incident and was now with a sister in the Libyan capital. They also countered allegations of a government spokesman who had said she is a prostitute.

The parents said al-Obeidi is a lawyer and that she is now being held at Gadhafi's compound in Bab Al-Aziziya in the capital. It's unclear where the parents spoke from and Al-Jazeera did not provide their names. The Associated Press only identifies rape victims who volunteer their names.

"I don't feel ashamed, instead my head is up high," the mother told Al-Jazeera, saying her daughter "broke the barrier that no other man could break" by coming forward about her rape.

In the Al-Jazeera footage, the teary-eyed mother holds the Libyan opposition flag around her shoulders and says al-Obeidi is "a hostage, taken by the tyrants." She also pleads for help from the "youth of Tripoli."

The mother says she received a phone call Monday from an unidentified caller, purportedly from the Gadhafi camp, telling her al-Obeidi is held at the Tripoli compound and asking her to instruct her daughter to change the rape claim in return for freedom and other benefits.

"Whatever you ask for, you will get: build a new house or get the money," the mother said the caller offered.

Government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim claimed in an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday that al-Obeidi was a prostitute who has since her out burst at the Rixos Hotel been freed and is staying with her sister in Tripoli.

The government also said four men were interrogated in the case, including the son of a high-ranking state official.

In the Al-Jazeera interview, the father held forth a photograph he said showed al-Obeidi graduating from Law School. He said she was pursuing a postgraduate degree.

Al-Obeidi had told foreign media on Saturday that she was detained by a number of Gadhafi troops at a Tripoli checkpoint on Wednesday. She said they were drinking whiskey and handcuffed her. She said 15 men later raped her. Al-Obeidi's claim could not be independently verified.

The London-based Amnesty International said al-Obeidi's account was "stomach-churning" and called on authorities to launch "an independent and impartial investigation" into the case, reveal al-Obeidi's whereabouts and set her free.

"The Libyan authorities have a long record of silencing those who dare speak out against human rights violations," Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa Director, said in a statement.

"It is all the more worrying that they did not hesitate to do this, using heavy-handed methods, despite the presence of the international media," Smart said.

Many of these Mid-East oil dictators allow fanatical Islamic religious practices, which abuse and oppress women, to thrive in their countries.

The body, head and face covering religious clothing, that women who are under fanatical Islam wear, has been shown in medical studies worldwide to cause severe and debilitating vitamin D deficiency in these women. The deficiency intensifies as these women age and manifests into severe diseases. The vitamin D deficiency is caused by their skin not having enough exposure to sunlight to produce vitamin D. (human skin cannot produce vitamin D without ADEQUATE exposure to sunlight).

In the 1990's, in England, many children of Muslim women were being born with severe rickets because their mothers were severely vitamin D deficient while pregnant from wearing body, head and face covering religious clothing. This medical study/phenomenon is available on the internet for anyone to read. (rickets is a severe deformity of the leg bones of children from vitamin D deficiency).

Severe vitamin D deficiency manifests into many debilitating diseases leading to premature aging and death in Muslim women. If you notice in many of the media photos, young Muslim are quite beautiful, but age rapidly, older Muslim women often look prematurely aged/obese. Premature aging and obesity is one of the manifestations of severe and chronic vitamin D deficiency. (when the body is deficient of vitamin D it will retain fat to store whatever vitamin D is available).

Type "Muslim women/vitamin D deficiency/rickets" into your search engine.

To the Honorable Nobel Peace Prize Nominating Committee:

Libyan attorney Iman al-Obeidi has courageously set herself in harms way to bring forth a plea for justice for women who. like her, are the victims of histories most ignored and least acknowledged and appreciated casualties of war.

The Nobel Peace Prize Nominating Committee stands for elevating and highlighting those who have given the most for the cause of peace. Who can deny Ms al-Obeidi's contribution to this discourse which is beyond exemplary?

She is the most courageous actor in the continuing quest for peace for our planet. She ranks with Aung San Su Ky as a heroic figure of our times.

Please award her the Nobel Peace Prize. She is beyond anything I have seen in my lifetime as a committed activist for peace.

Sincerely, ********** Esq.

A Libyan man from Tobruk today publicly proposed to Eman ! (She's not there to accept, and we pray she outlives her ordeal).

But shouldn't we adjust the notions and perceptions about these societies ?

Attorney Iman al-Obeidi, you are a brave woman and your courageous defiance, demanding truth, demanding justice in the face of totalitarian evil is a clarion call to all of us. How much more should we be active, when we have far less to lose? So too, the courage of your parents. Ms. al-Obeidi, you are not forgotten. You have called all of us to remember one of the most evil weapons of war.

Apparently Kaddafi and sons know they squatted and fell back on it in this sorry affair. The blow back is another nail in the collective coffin of their sorry regime.

My hat is off with all admiration for Attorney al-Obeidi, her courage and persistence in her quest for justice. Her efforts are truly humbling.

She is my nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Not ordinary waitresses. In these types of hotels, the employees are state agents.

The rape of women is condoned, not only in this case but worldwide.

It is viewed as a lesser crime.

As one who experienced it, I know for a darned fact it's not a "lesser crime." It can mess you up for life.

The cretins who did this should be put down. Those who support them deserve the same fate.

Don't get it mistaken, I do believe Ms. Iman al-Obeidi complaint, and she should be released immediately, and an investigation to follow. MOF I think Iman al-Obeidi and her mother are the Middle East's Ladies of Liberty! Hopefully more and more women and men stand up for what is right.

With that said, let us (USA) not get into another war based on rape allegations. This is a civil war matter with in Lybia and the rebels are welcome to our war toys, but not our troops. The rebels can call upon their brothrens across the Middle East!

I wish the onlookers had snatched that woman out of their hands before they got her to the car.

This would be a good segment on the "What Would You Do" show. (Me? I'd be hiding behind a curtain until they were all gone, then I'd go to HuffPost to vent.)

Would getting shot have helped? I wish I could say I'd be brave enough but a man with a gun is a man in charge.
