Religious Leaders Go On Hunger Strike Over GOP Budget Cuts

First Posted: 03/29/11 01:44 AM ET Updated: 05/28/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- As Congress' negotiations over a resolution to keep the government funded devolve, exasperated religious leaders on Monday said the deep federal budgets cuts being proposed are immoral. In response, they're going on a hunger strike.

"The budget is a moral document, and it's very important," said former Rep. Tony Hall (D-Ohio), the head of the Alliance to End Hunger. "I think a country is judged on how it treats the poorest of its citizens. We live in a country that's been very blessed, and if we can't take care of our neediest citizens, then I think that doesn't speak well of us."

Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, the heads of five anti-hunger organizations -- including Jim Wallis of Sojourners, Rev. David Beckmann of Bread for the World, and Ritu Sharma of Women Thrive Worldwide -- announced open-ended fasts in protest of proposed cuts to domestic and international food programs contained in the six-month spending bill that has been passed by the House.

Hall noted, in an interview with The Huffington Post on Monday, that there are 50 million Americans and 1 billion people worldwide who do not have enough to eat. Everyday, 25,000 people die of hunger and hunger-related diseases worldwide, he said, adding that not enough has been done to make people aware of those facts.

It's not the first time he's gone on a hunger strike to call attention to the issue. While in Congress, Hall went on a 22-day fast to protest cuts to food programs in the 1993 budget.

Now, almost twenty years later, he says the stakes are even higher.

"We're asking this to start getting painful for you," Hall said of the campaign. "We're asking you to find some act of personal sacrifice that helps you stand in solidarity with those who will be most hurt by those cuts. Jim Wallis called it 'spiritual escalation.' The stakes have already been high, but we're calling everyone to go deeper."

In H.R. 1, which passed the House in February and is the subject of current negotiations, House Republicans are calling for $61 billion in total cuts to 2011 spending. And among the programs on the chopping block are two international food aid programs, the Food for Peace PL 480 program and the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education Program.

"Seven in ten of the world's hungry are women, who are also responsible for ensuring that their families are fed," said Sharma in a statement on Monday. "As someone who has tried to live on a dollar a day myself in some of the world's poorest areas, I have experienced a little of what they struggle with every day. It is essential for our lawmakers not to slash budgets that invest in the sustainability of global food supplies when food prices and hunger are both at all-time highs."

Members of the coalition of Christian, Jewish and Muslim aid groups who appeared at the conference said the budget cuts proposed in the House represent a 2.6% cut in total spending but 26% cut in spending on poverty focused foreign aid. The extension of Bush era-tax cuts last December alone, they noted, will cost $6.7 billion through estate-planning loopholes.

Fasting participants will drink only water this week, with some beginning to add juices the week after.

"I'm having a doctor monitor me," said Hall, 69. "So I'm okay. I'm fine."

Finally, some directors of the after-life are exhibiting noble cause for this life.  In January, 2011, he wealthy and their corporations were infused with greater wealth with the new tax laws.  Now  the time to sacrifice is here: the treasury has no tax receipts, no money.  Who will sacrifice?  "Not we", shout the strong.  the only ones left are  Read More...

And until five or ten of them die from their starvation, no one will notice or take action. It's reprehensible the way the media plays the public like a fiddle. It's even more reprehensible the way the public subscribes to the fright-wing fringe as a voice instead of the fart they are.

There will not be a budget for as long as the Tea Party group, continues to want to cut deeply into social Programs that have nothing to do with the budget for this year. John have not communication with them because they are not listing, they think this is what they was sent to Washington to do. They will not agree with anything that the Democrats agrees with. How can there ever be a Budget when these people are in disagreement with everything that is put before them if the Democrats agrees they push it a little further causing nothing to get done. Oh but America you have now something that we have never had before something that will not think what is good for the Country as a whole but something that believe in trickle down and tax cuts for the Rich Capitalism, and taxing the Middle Class and the working poor taking away any social programs, decreasing in any help that anyone can receive from their states. These are really bad times for ordinary American.

As we all know when Christ divided up the fish and the bread, he charged for it.

When he brought Lazarus back from the dead he asked for payment for services rendered.

It's about time the religious groups take a stand against cutting off aid for those in society who are suffering most. It's sad that the GOP takes the strongest stand of their lives for giving the wealthy extra tax cuts, but have no problem cutting off aid to those in society who need it the most, like the poor, unemployed, homeless.

To the GOP, don't pretend to be all high and almighty, God like, if you are going to rob the poor to pay the rich!

He understands human psychology: people don't change until it gets very painful. That's why alcoholics have to hit rock bottom.

And that's why I say let's give the Republicans everything they want. The pain for the poor and middle class (especially the under-informed Reublican/Tea Party supporters) will get so great there will be riots in the streets from almost everyone. Other than the 2% at the top, of course.

Crazy scenario, we've seen this in many 3rd world countries, the poor march the streets and overthrow, but first the rich will turn the military and police on them, kill a batch of them, then eventually the poor can take over.

The article failed to mention that Tony Hall's Alliance to End Hunger is a FAITH-BASED organization.

Therefore, they probably forcefully proselytize hungry people before they give them any food. Their very operation is a violation of the separation of church and state. If they can't feed the hungry in a secular, unconditional manner, then they certainly should not be receiving any government funds.

Way to lose sight of the point; i.e., that hungry people are getting fed.

The newest mantra of the Republicans is that social issues are inextricably woven into economic issues.

Yep. We'll reduce the deficit by cutting off medical care for poor and unemployed people, cutting off Head Start breakfasts, cutting off Meals on Wheels for the elderly, demanding no more abortion while denying medical care to newborns.

Nothing illogical here. Simply more of "Me First."

I read the article:

"As Rep. Michele Bachmann put it in a speech here Saturday: “Social conservatism is fiscal conservatism.” .... Their argument is that many of the outcomes that have produced the nation’s economic crisis are, at their core, driven by moral deficiencies: greed, dishonesty, selfishness, cowardice, and the like..."

No matter how true this statement is, the greed monster has taken over in America and it would take a miracle to shut it down.

Greed and selfishness has been in the hearts and minds of men for a long time and thanks to Reagan the blockade was taken away during his admin. For some time now greed has been in this crazy hoarding stage only to go into this dominating take over all aspects of peoples life stage.

Appealing to Republican legislators conscience might work......................If they had one.

I suspect they lost that when they sold their souls for campaign funds. no one who truly believes in God, or justice, could put forward what they are proposing. Money is all they care about.

Take a good look at the Proposed GOP/TP Budget Cuts and they will clearly show that the People in this Country who can least afford to be cut, are the ones being Cut. Where are the Cuts to the Corps and Banks who have Prospered the most in the last 10 years. And the most Important thing of all, WHERE ARE THE JOBS!!! The House has not submitted even ONE Bill to create new Jobs in this Country. Pretty obvious what they are doing.

It's all on the GOP agenda and has been for a long, long time.

The people shall be serfs - the corporations and evil scuppers who own them shall be lords of the manor, just as the very wealthy are now.

republikans are not now, nor have they ever been, interested in helping America get its living wage jobs back, and they're really not interested in providing health care, education, services or retirement packages either.

The only jobs that will be left in America will be service jobs. Start building your mud hut.

I too believe that a country is judged on how it treats the poorest of its citizens. We have failed. It's time for more than hollow gestures.
