(RNS) Facebook shut down a "Third Palestinian Intifada" page and similar groups this week, prompted by complaints from Jewish groups that the content had crossed the line from free speech to violent incitement.

The campaign has raised questions about whether Facebook should be used to facilitate some popular uprisings but not others, and even whether Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has lost touch with his family's Jewish roots.

Inspired by the successful use of social media to fuel popular protests in Egypt and elsewhere, the intifada fan page had amassed more than 300,000 "likes" from users for its proposed May 15 uprising before disappearing Tuesday (March 29).

Facebook, which has more than 500 million users worldwide, prohibits content that is "hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence."

The intifada page was permitted as long as the creators maintained a theme of peaceful protest and deleted violent postings. But as the controversy grew, with Israeli officials and Jewish groups urging Facebook to take down the pages, the content deteriorated.

The Anti-Defamation League, which had criticized Facebook's initial decision to permit the page, applauded the company's reversal.

"We hope that they will continue to vigilantly monitor their pages for other groups that call for violence or terrorism against Jews and Israel," said the ADL's national director, Abraham Foxman. "We look forward to continuing our dialogue with Facebook on issues of mutual concern, including hate speech, Holocaust denial and anti-Semitism."

The dispute has resurrected long-simmering concerns among some groups over Zuckerberg's perceived lack of solidarity with the Jewish people.

Zuckerberg was raised in a Jewish home and belonged to Alpha Epsilon Pi, a historically Jewish fraternity, before dropping out of Harvard University in 2004. He has since described himself as an atheist, however, and his longtime girlfriend is not Jewish.

Even before the intifada controversy, users had already created several Facebook sites about Zuckerberg's religion, including "Join us to tell Mark Zuckerberg about his moral duty to support Israel" and "Why is Mark Zuckerberg a self-hating Jew?"

None of the official requests to Zuckerberg regarding the intifada page had tried appealing to his Jewish roots.

"ADL does not make appeals based on a person's religious identity," explained Deborah Lauter, the ADL's civil rights director, in a statement. "We have appealed to Mark Zuckerberg -- and his colleagues -- in their professional capacities, including their sense of reason, decency and fairness."

In 2009, prompted by the existence of Holocaust-denial groups on the site, the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs published a report that accused Facebook of creating "an anti-Semitic policy platform where the only explicitly allowed hate is that, within certain parameters, directed against Jews."

The first Palestinian intifada began in 1987; the second uprising began in 2000. The proposed third intifada date is May 15, which Palestinians mourn as Nakba Day, or Catastrophe Day, marking the day after the 1948 establishment of Israel, when hundreds of thousands of Arabs fled or were expelled from their homes.

Are American Jews loyal to America or to Israel? Because last time I checked, the interests of the two countries are not necessarily the same.

It depends!
American Jews here

are Loyal to the USA USA USA USA!

Those who "think" Judea & Samaria are tribals and historically are loyal to their tribes!
Therefore; Israel is FIRST to them and the USA is LAST!
Of course they will deny it!
A simple test is to find out where their contributions to CHARITY go!
One American giving Israel 80% must be 20% Americans.. Plain & Simple!

If anyone is hurt or killed on the advertised "Third Intifadah Day," facebook needs to held liable and accountable before the law.
May there be peace and compassion and reason, and may Israel and Palestine, side by side, live in peace and prosperity soon.

I don't remember Facebook taking down other offensive pages that had incited violence, like draw Muhammad day. Oh, I forgot Islamophobia is an acceptable practice and hate speech against Muslims is most of the time disguised as freedom of speech.

How is "draw Mohammad day" inciting violence? Or hate speech? Unless you believe that Muslims aren't responsible for their own actions, which I find offensive.

When I first saw the page - it had actually comments that called for the killing of Israel and getting rid of Israel all together. It was pretty violent. Then, after many people copied the comments that were hateful and spread them around and showed the language being used, the page finally started to watch what was allowed on the page, and posts with prayers and direction that talked of Mohammed replaced those comments. It was pretty nasty before that. Seriously.

Interesting. It's Islamophobia to draw a picture of Mohammed, but political protest to saw off the head of babies.

Stay classy, Israel-basher.

The only way for the Palestinians to achieve justice is through peaceful protest and an appeal to the world for recognition of their state, in the entirety West Bank, Arab East Jerusalem, and Gaza - outside the borders defined for Israel by the UN in 1947/8.

While I'm strongly in favor of justice for the Palestinians, including the inalienable, universally recognized right of return for all refugees to the homes they were forced from in Israel, it won't be achieved by using violence or hate. And from all we can glean, this Intifada page promoted "an eye for an eye" rather than "turn the other cheek." Any page that promotes violence and hate should be taken down. It certainly Facebook did the right thing, regardless of who pressured them to do so.

"Arab East Jerusalem" and the West Bank were never a part of Palestine, and they were only a part of Jordan as a result of, you guessed it, invasion and occupation.

Down is up, right is left, and you are a genius.

Thanks for the compliment, BGosh, but I'm no genius - just another person concerned about justice and human rights.

The entire region, including what is now Israel, was Palestine prior to 1948 (see my avatar travel poster inviting tourism to Palestine, pre-Israel), so of course Arab East Jerusalem and the West Bank were part of Palestine. How could anyone seriously claim otherwise?

It seems like a great solution for the new state Palestine to be composed not of historic Palestine (which includes what is now Israel), but, rather, to be assembled from Arab East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza, doesn't it? The Palestinians don't get all of their historic land back, and will almost surely not get full right of return to the homes and lands they were forced from within the 1967 borders of Israel, but that's realpolitik.

Why would Palestinians now accept borders that they initially rejected, together with all Arab neighbour states, under the "Three No's" doctrine?

While fanatics like Hamas might not accept anything other that full justice for the Palestinians and a return of all lands taken from the Palestinians when Israel was carved from their lands in 1948, those with a more realistic outlook (Abbas and, I hope, the majority of Palestinians) would probably compromise and give up the land that comprises Israel within the 1967 borders.

Don't you think Palestinians would accept a new state composed of the entirety of Arab East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza, relinquishing claims to the land that defines the internationally recognized 1967 borders of Israel?

Good thing. The page was probably run by AIPAC cronies anyway. Kind of like the fake Liberals on HP...

Even if it wasn't, it's good that the more extremist elements are being silenced so the true voice of the Palestinian people can be heard. Then again, with the way Israel has been talking lately, I hope for everyone's sake Israel doesn't decide to go for broke...it won't be pretty.

emmanuel, while I understand you being suspect towards some of the comments on that facebook page, which I did witness - I have seen plenty on twitter that is pretty extreme - there are always those who ignore them, however - or call them out. But, what is weird is when you see someone who says they are from the US talking to these extreme people calling for the violence - like they are "cool" with it.

Sometimes - there are just a few that can ruin for the good, but I can say for sure that in my own experiences - many who these extreme type who want to incite violence, often get told that what they are doing is not approved by many - not matter what part of the world they are from.

If the page violated the rules of content then the appropriate action is to remove it.

However, the notion by some that Mark Zuckerberg has a moral obligation to support Israel is absolutely preposterous. He has the right to sort out the facts and form his own opinion regarding the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians as opposed to swearing blind allegiance based solely on ancestry. There should be no expectation of him to use his succees to act as a spokesperson or activist for the nation of Israel just because he comes from a Jewish family.

Some time back I went to some Synagogs for Sabbath services because I wanted better understanding. At one I sat way back in a corner seat with a small note pad and was taking notes. A man happened to see me and came from the middle section about 6 rows up and told me as it was the Sabbath I should not be doing any work. Many of those there did work driving there cars there, just like any taxi driver. There was a person up front giving an advertisement for a local supermarket, a lady was later up on a stage telling those there they should be helpful to their homosexual brothers. I learned a lot at that service.

Religions often present ideal versions of themselves in their PR. Actual behaviour by individual members or groups will vary greatly. You'll learn the same lesson in any gathering of any faith, political party, or other social group, whether it be a church, mosque, or whatever.

The headline "Jews Pressure Facebook Over Palestinian Intifada Page" is misleading, as it infers all Jews complained to Facebook. The word "pressured" is also misleading, as it infers that the complainers have some sort of special leverage over Facebook or threatened the website with some sort of action.

According to the story, Israel and the ADL civil rights group complained to Facebook. How is it wrong to complain about content that supports violence? How would anyone benefit from another intifada?

Suggestion for a better headline:

A lot of Palestinians could benefit if the Intifada was successful and the occupation ended.

In the eyes of the Palestinian's, the Intifada is the same as the resistance during the French Revolution. Yes, there is occasional violence, but the thrust of the Intifada is not cooperating with the occupiers.

No intifada would ever be successful. The second one of those bombers blows themselves up, the West Bank gets shut down for good. Honestly, I don't know why Israel allows those illegal immigrants to stay there. America deports its illegal immigrants. Israel should do the same. Arabs are illegal immigrants into Israeli land. The West Bank is nothing more than Judea and Sumeria. Gaza used to belong to the Philistines who are long dead and were crushed by Eretz Yisrael. They're finding books and stones and tablets in Jordon that have Hebrew on them. Jordan was created as a result of Arab appeasement when the Arabs wanted Palestine (which was created to be given to the Jews) for themselves. They promised the Jews if we gave them Trans-Jordan, there would be peace. Well, nearly 100 years later, they're still trying to take our land in exchange for peace and they've never given us peace. It's time to stop negotiating with words and to start negotiating with weapons. All Arabs have 90 days to evacuate the West Bank and Gaza. Failure to comply will result in forced deportation.

Some of Israel's policies during the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, the ghettoisation, collective punishment, Jew only settlements and roads, etc....I wonder where they got such ideas and implementation methods from....perhaps from some other government in their recent past? And then David becomes Goliath. Palestinians have been David for decades now, and they had nothing to do with the Holocaust.

I use Facebook to publish my anti-government corruption blogs.
I consistently and constantly hit the government on various issues from corruption to cronyism.
I DON'T use any threats or tell anyone to harm anyone else.
Facebook is a great tool to get your message out, however if you are calling for actual violence on Facebook, I could see where they would stick to the guidelines, and close the site.
If Facebook doesn't do that, then they can find themselves in a lawsuit, if someone uses their sites to promote violence, and someone gets killed.
I don't agree with a lot of Facebook policies, but they actually give a certain amount of freedom (for free) that you can't find on other social networks. With great power, comes great responsibiltity

Because Intifada and Jihad are the only two things Palestinians wish to participate in. It certainly is not a peaceful creation of their own homeland which , as in Gaza, has actually been given them, only to be let overrun by the Persian run terrorist organization of Hamas. This was their first attempt at self rule, and it's failed miserably. Until they become responsible for their own citizens actions, until they become accountable for administering a nation of people, and until the eschew the Persian and Arab League puppetry which has defined them, they will be blockaded, and build upon, and bombed, and ever one in a while invaded. As always their choice. Tick Tock Tick Tock

Not all of them prescribe to what you accuse them. Although there are two very violent heads in the areas you speak of - many who want peace are trapped within at least two very violent roles.

In addition, you speak only of those on Palestinian side. Israel can be very overbearing in their responses. Although I understand the years of conflict and battle prompting them to react in such a way - it doesn't help either.
