Alessandra Mussolini, the granddaughter of the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, has torn into an Italian model for saying that Silvio Berlusconi has become an international embarrassment.

Bianca Balti, who has posed for Playboy, Victoria's Secret and this year's Pirelli calendar, said the whole world was "making fun" of Italy and Italians because of the "bunga bunga" sex scandal the prime minister is embroiled in.

I was in Genoa some years ago and stopped (incredulously) to take a picture of the Alessandra Mussolini election poster on a wall by the harbor. A muscular old man came up behind me, put his hand on my shoulder, gave me a thumbs-up and said "Mussolini!"

I still laugh about it as I type this.
