GE Freedom Report: Fake Twitter Account Mocks GE's Tax Avoidance (PICTURES)

First Posted: 03/30/11 04:06 PM ET   Updated: 05/30/11 06:12 AM ET

After a New York Times story reported that due to some creative accounting, General Electric paid $0 in American taxes in 2010, GE's most prominent defender has been an unverified account known only as @GEpublicaffairs on Twitter.

Enter @GEfreedomreport, a parody Twitter account lampooning the scandal that appeared yesterday. The account, whose author is not publicly known, portrays GE as cartoonishly wealthy bureaucrats unable to process the idea that such tax avoidance is unacceptable.

Last year, the Twitter account @BPGlobalPR similarly satirized BP's clumsy reaction to the oil spill to great comedic effect and attention from the media.

Here are some of our favorite tweets from the GE parody account so far.

Why do so many incredibly wealthy interests NOT have to pay their fair share? Because *you* made it LEGAL. It's a pretty safe bet that every time *you* vote for someone with an R or D after their name you're agreeing to keep the corporate welfare trough full. I'm sure Wall Street's puppets in Congress are relieved that you're pointing the finger at GE and others, rather than the people who make the loopholes for them in the first place.

Don't want to pay for Wall Street's free ride? Then you should STOP VOTING FOR IT!

I wonder if we could tie the amount of taxes a company pays to the amount of employees they have and the amount of public resources they use.
09:33 AM on 04/01/2011
I've thought about this. It'd have to be under the proviso that the employees actually both lived in the country and made at least minimum wage.

I liked #7. On a serious note, really I'm perplexed how to react to this. Do we boycott GE? That would put American jobs in peril. Or do we say it's not GE's fault they're taking advantage of loopholes?

This is sad. As it is a patriotic duty to pay your taxes. So they should pay. After all they build things, but they dance on commercials. Siemans pays their taxes and shows, we are serious, we are going to build something, and this is what we are doing, and our plan. GE-country dance while building a jet. I want my Jets made by Siemans at least I can trust that they weren't dancing

The joke is on us, they want us to laugh and treat this as a non-issue, and they along with so many of the other major corporations will continue to rape the American Tax payer with their greed .

I agree with those that have posted that it would be funnier if it wasn't such a outrage. How to these "patriots" sleep at night? I wonder if NBC will pick this up and report it?

I'm sure this was supposed to be cute and funny, but admit my sense of humor about this situation is gone. These corporations won't quit ripping off the taxpayer until we demand our politicians do something about this! Time for peaceful but forceful revolution!

The corporations cook their books until they not only don't pay taxes, they collect tax breaks and take our tax money to further enrich themselves. It's hard to boycott them because they own pieces of so many things. How do you boycott GE? I wish we could boycott paying taxes ourselves... no taxes from us until the corporations are made to pay and play fairly. How you get this started, I don't know, but I wish there were a way to organize it. What would the IRS do, what could they do, if literally millions of us simply refused to send in our tax dollars until the corporations sent in their?
