Recalled Tylenol

First Posted: 03/30/11 11:41 AM ET Updated: 05/30/11 06:12 AM ET

Johnson & Johnson said it was recalling more than 700,000 bottles or packages of Tylenol and other consumer medicines made at a now-closed plant, the latest in a litany of recalls by the company.

J&J's McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit recalled one lot of Tylenol 8 Hour Extended Release Caplets, or 34,056 bottles, from retailers, the company said.

The company cited a musty odor that has prompted many other J&J recalls. The product was made at its Fort Washington, Pennsylvania plant before J&J closed the facility in April 2010.

Separately, McNeil added 10 lots of other products, amounting to 717,696 bottles or packages, to a wholesale level recall it initiated on January 14. Those products included various forms of pain reliever Tylenol, as well as allergy drug Benadryl and cough/cold medicine Sudafed.

In that recall, McNeil said it was taking precautions after a review of records found instances where equipment cleaning procedures were insufficient or cleaning was not adequately documented, although it said it was unlikely to have hurt product quality.

J&J has recalled more than 300 million bottles and packages of adult and children's consumer medicines in the past 15 months. Although no injuries have been linked to the recalls, they have sullied J&J's reputation, pressured its share price and sparked Congressional investigations.

This recall is not very surprising at this point. Johnson & Johnson has been inundated with recalls over the past year for its over-the-counter pharmaceuticals. With any luck the company will be able to shape up and return safe products to store shelves soon. Regards, TM http://www.tylenol-attorney.com/

This company is a disaster. It has gone from one of the world's most respected companies to a cut-the-corners, sloppy also-ran. As a former shareholder I have followed this company closely and have been extremely disappointed. The conditions at their Puerto Rico plant were just appalling.

The CEO needs to go.

I remember the company being topnotch, was it due to the purchase of McNeil?

I think it has to do with the company getting complacent. For decades they have been told they were among the world's best companies. They probably were for much of the period, but that kind of praise breeds hubris. They just got lazy and sloppy, relying for years on their good reputation.

It will take a decade or more to the re-build the brand.

This "article" tells me next to nothing about how to identify which bottles are being recalled. A "musty smell" means nothing to me----how about some REAL information, such as lot number or whatever it's called? Date of manufacture perhaps?

No kidding...

Acetaminophen is generally about the worst choice for a pain reliever used regularly, though. Aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen sodium can cause ulcers if overused, but I'd rather have an ulcer than destroy my liver, personally.

I think that many probably overuse pain relievers. I know I used to before I understood that they can cause damage to the body over time.

Ibuprofen can and does cause kidney damage-- I didn't know until it was too late-
like you I knew Acetaminophen could cause liver damage but all I ever heard about Ibuprofen was about ulcers.

Now I can only take Acetaminophen seeing there is recall got my attention- and finding no useful information from this article is unfortunate.

Tylenol would not pass today's FDA standards sue to its cumulative toxicity. I'm very surprised to see it's still on the shelves & still so popular, especially after the latest series of recalls. Who keeps buying this stuff?

Although no injuries have been linked to the recalls, they have sullied J&J's reputation, pressured its share price and sparked Congressional investigations.....Here comes the lobbyist with checkbooks in hand. Don't worry J&J, everything will be fine.

The article has failed to provide any information aside from what looks like a copy/paste job. When readers begin to complain, you know someone is not doing what they were hired to do...and I assume that would entail a degree in journalism at least. But now I am not so sure.

Just tired of reading no news , news items that say nothing and leave the reader with a lot more questions. Come on people, you're suppose to be in the news business. or is it the adv. bus.

LEGALIZE IT! its less harmful to your body than any of these mass produced pills . marijuana may be dangerous if you abuse it (so they say) but take 15 tylenol and it will be your last headache!

One would think that providing lot numbers would have been helpful to the public. Nice article about nothing.
