Tax Refunds Could Be Delayed Due To Government Shutdown, IRS Says

Government Shutdown

First Posted: 03/31/11 02:33 PM ET Updated: 05/31/11 06:12 AM ET

Bloomberg:

Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Douglas Shulman said the Obama administration has not decided whether the IRS would process tax returns and issue refunds if Congress cannot agree to a plan to avert a halt of government spending authority on April 8.

“We’ve never had a government shutdown in the middle of the filing season before,” Shulman said in testimony before a House Ways and Means subcommittee today in Washington. “The closer we get to April 15, the more consideration and factors are at play.”

I hope they still process refunds! We have already been held up in IRS limbo, despite filing in Jan., b/c we are due to pay back into the Homebuyer's Loan program this year. Our filing was held up by the IRS until Feb. 14th, & then there was the total ineptitude of that "service" at processing the filings and giving anyone a straight answer about their status. Now we are due to FINALLY get our return on Friday... unless the freaking shutdown screws us over yet again.

I would venture a guess that holding up refunds would be for the general public not the mega corps.

My wife and I got out refund over a month ago.

Lets face it, the Democrats are working hard to not pass a budget....they desperately want a shut down. They believe a shut down can change the conversation away from massive deficit spending.....which the socialist democrats massively support.

I think the voters will hold the democrats responsible for massive spending in 2012 and run them out of the Senate and possibly the Whitehouse.

Obama would do well to make some significant cuts to help save his presidency and to pay for his new war.

Keep dreaming. Polls show that Obama is holding good. Republicans are still blamed for the economy, and the wealthy tax cuts, and the lack of jobs bills, etc., People are waking up. It's about time, they've been in a coma. Where was your indignation about spending when Bush spent the surplus? Where was you indignation when he started to wars over lies?

As usual, Republicans NEVER take responsibility, or demand accountability from their own party. Never have, never will. Yet they point fingers at the Democrats. I call this, cr@ping in your neighbor's yard then complaining about the smell. Typical Republican.

If the government shuts down can we also delay paying our taxes? If so, let them shut down.
