For the first time since longtime editor Richard Johnson left the column, Page Six is getting a male face.

The New York Post's gossip column will welcome Ian Mohr as its deputy editor.

Former Page Six Deputy Editor Paula Froelich tweeted the news Friday morning; the Huffington Post has confirmed the move.

Mohr is a veteran of the trade magazine circuit, having served as Variety's box office reporter and The Hollywood Reporter's New York bureau chief. He is a Brooklyn native and a graduate of the University of Denver.

Johnson left the column late last year to join News Corp's iPad-only The Daily, where he writes The Flash gossip column. Emily Smith now edits the column, which is home to reporters Stephanie Smith and Tara Palmeri as well.

I am a liberal Democrat living in New York, and I am amazed by the comments before mine. It is a gossip column for heaven's sake. It has never pretended to be anything other than mindless and superficial. I am very concerned with the tendency in our media to put stories that belong on Page Six on our front pages and our nightly news (and commentary) shows. But, gossip for the sake of entertainment should be encouraged. Then, perhaps the news pages (and channels) can get back to reporting and analyzing actual news. Oh, I know I will hear from people who tell me that I must be a Republican and a follower of the tea party, if I am going to defend a column in a Murdoch-owned paper. But, in New York, if you want good theater news (Michael Riedel) and good sports news, you have to take an occasional look at the Post. So, go ahead, blast away. But, Page Six is harmless fun.

harmless fun for the readers, not so much the people being gossiped about.

From what I hear, many of the people plant stories on Page Six about themselves. In this day and age, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Well said.

I shouldn't say that, but really! Imagine at the end of your life, you look back, and all you can say is: "I was a gossip editor."

I'd be so ashamed.
