eBay Releases Surprising iPad 2 Sales Figures

Apple's online store shows a three to four week wait for iPad 2 orders, and people have taken to eBay in droves for a bid at the hot new device.

According to eBay's data of iPad 2 transactions so far, nearly 12,000 units were auctioned or bought instantly during the device's first two weeks on sale. Price tags attached to the units show that bidders are willing to pay a premium for Apple's tablet. Writes CNET:

eBay averaged out the selling price of the various models (excluding color and type of 3G), which sit well above Apple's own retail pricing. For instance, the 16GB Wi-Fi only iPad 2, which retails for $499 had an average selling price of $697, which is $198 higher. It goes up from there, hitting a $264 premium on the 64GB model, and a staggering $406 average premium on the top-of-the-line 64GB model with built-in 3G.

eBay's figures also show that 65 percent of iPad 2 units were sold to customers in the United States during the first two weeks after the device was released. In 2010, only 35 percent of original iPads were sold domestically on eBay during a similar time period.

The most popular iPad 2 model among eBay buyers around the world? 16GB WiFi-only units, which account for 30 percent of the site's total iPad 2 sales.
