As someone who has been writing professionally since the days of carbon paper, I suspect those who find a typewriter even remotely "romantic" now never wrote a manuscript draft on one and then had to retype the whole book for a clean copy for a publisher, agent, or transom. I don't miss mine but I did dearly love it when I bought it -- brand new! -- the summer I turned 16. An Olympia portable with pica type. I felt only joy ditching it for a computer: a Radio Shack TRS-80. What a miracle machine . . . at the time.
