Yahoo! News:

PATNA (AFP) -- Fifteen female foetuses have been found in jars left on a rubbish dump, Indian police said Monday, days after census data showed the ratio of girls to boys is at the nation's lowest level since 1947.

The foetuses were recovered Sunday from a dump near a private nursing home in Kishanganj town in the impoverished eastern Indian state of Bihar after they were spotted by children playing cricket, according to police.

Why doesn't anyone get it? Life is LIFE. The picture doesn't show 15 fetuses. It shows 15 BABIES. Babies that could feel, could think. They were people. Send them to an orphanage. Adopt an Indian child if you think it's such a problem!
If you have such strong feelings about it, then why haven't any of you guys taken ACTION with what's going on in India? Be the change! Every little thing counts.

Why are we mourning female foeticide? Why this hypocrisy? It is better to be killed at this stage rather being killed with humiliation of sexual abuse.. rape..domestic violence..!! India sucks..when it comes to "Women Protection".!

So what? These glorified mixture of sperm & eggs, were nothing more than just that. they were unwanted for a reason. Where should they have been dumped? They are nothing more then trash, get a gtip.

I find it funny when people call India the largest democracy in the world. If that is true then Osama Bin Laden is the greatest democrat.
01:33 AM on 04/06/2011
I'm sure you find lots of things funny, must be helpful when you don't quite know what you're talking about. OBL and the Taliban have much more in common with the conservative Repubs, given who armed them in the first place.

The tragedy here is not one of pro or anti abortion, it is one of blatant misogyny!!! The foetus's here are "between four and six months old" when it's fairly advanced in the pregnancy. I wish I could believe that this was a result of miscarriages or spontaneous aborts and simply a case of sloppy disposal on the part of the clinic - however since the foetus's are almost all female, it points to something more sinister.

Having said that, I have to very reluctantly agree with some of the posters here that this is probably a better fate than what could have awaited these unwanted "potential women!" Until women really start being accepted as equals - all over the World - we will sadly be confronted with horrors like this over and over and over again!

HuffPost ... don't show a picture like that.

Haven't you got any respect?
There was an outrage in the US when dead US soldiers were shown and you don't have any problem showing dead children?

I don't want abortions to be made illegal. Have one, have two! Please have an abortion. My problem is that the females go over the side first.

Stop victimizing women in the world and at home! Widowed women in India are outcasts and are left on the streets to fend for themselves. I've seen documentaries where older women have died on the street and no one takes the time to bury them. The stray dogs gnaw on the dead bodies of these women. Which is better, death in the womb or death on a street?
01:41 AM on 04/06/2011
Um, that's a very nice and dramatic story to be told in documentaries, but um, that's not really reality based. Widowed women in India are usually capable of taking care of themselves and often taken care of by their children (of both genders) just like here at home. I'm sure that you can find similar dramatic stories of homeless women in the U.S. as well, and while it's a tragedy it's hardly an indication of how older women are treated.

Should a homeless person die on the street in India, please rest assured that they will be attended to by the relevant public health authorities just like here in the u.s. and stray dogs do not go gnawing on their bones (or their bodies), no matter how wonderful a shot your favorite documentarian may have gotten.

That's an interesting choice there, but it's rather silly one. We don't know how these fetuses got here, and more than likely they were simply from girls from wealthier families who found themselves knocked up. Please remember that they were found near a private nursing home, which usually costs money. So even if the fetuses had been carried to term (if they were healthy enough to do so, which we also don't know), they'd hardly have been on the street.

It sounds like speculation that it's sex selection which caused these abortions but even it is, are both males and females being educated that the SEX of a child is determined by the male and not the female?

If these were done because they could not afford to raise these children, it's understandable. India has one of the highest poverty rates on the planet. A large portion of India's children suffer from malnutrition.

My policy is to Never tell anyone on the planet what to do with their bodies. It is their business if they choose to have or not to have children period.

What is sad is all the people who believe they can run other peoples lives from their living rooms, or from the pulpit. No one can make life-chaning decisions for anyone else. It's disrespectful to even assume that they can or would.
01:42 AM on 04/06/2011
How do you know what "they" were thinking? Your speculations and those of everyone else leaping to false conclusions with zero facts are simply your own lurid imagination and reflective of your poorly informed prejudices regarding India.

This is yet another reminder (as if any were needed) of how LUCKY I am to be born in a first world country, where such horrible choices will never be forced upon me. If I ever have the good fortune to become pregnant, I will treasure that baby, and my heart breaks for the women of the world who have to make such horrible choices like this every day. :(

who said they had to? maybe they wanted to. newsflash babies are aborted here every day. do you think they are happy to be aborted in america? or would they rather be aborted in india? oh wait they are dead now and have no say in the matter.

Soufi,
Your reply makes little sense so I am unsure how to respond. My thoughts weren't reflecting on how a fetus "feels" about being aborted, but that I feel lucky/grateful that I am not exposed to the same conditions as those in 3rd world countries, my life is easier just by being born here.

Never said I was against abortion. Have all the abortions you want. Knock youself out ace. That will sure show me. Feminism is not a one trick pony. It's about women being valued as equal human beings. Feminism = Abortion is a cheap substitute for the real thing. I think aborting girls because boys are valued more is a barbarous practice. You won't find any of the so-called woman's rights organizations saying the same.
01:03 PM on 04/05/2011
Of course you will, should you bother listening instead of simply assuming. We know nothing beyond the fact that there were fetuses and their gender, we know nothing at all about how or why they were aborted or by whom. Thus anything else is speculation.

You probably won't find any of the "so-called woman's rights" organizations saying the same thing...well I don't know that to be true, but if they do not it's probably more because it muddies the issue of abortion rather than they find it acceptable.

Whether you like it or not the ability to choose is a part of feminism. There is nothing I hate more than someone else's religion, or their elected representitive telling ME what I can do with my body. I think the tragedy here is that for the vast majority of Indians, India is a third world country and the reasons for having an abortion are much less about "choice" per se.

How odd that those who care so much about the fetus inside the womb are the first to support cutting programs geared toward keeping children outside the womb healthy.

It is horrible but it is real. I'm glad HP posts these kind of articles.
And the only way to combat this is through education - not just education for girls & women in the impoverished states in India to show them that they do have a choice, but education to change men's attitude towards women. I can only hope that al the least the disparity in gender ratio will lead the Indian society to value women more.

It probably won't help India value women more. In China, you would think that women could pick and choose the best husband for themselves, seeing as they are so outnumbered, but NOOOO, their parents basically sell them off to the highest bidder. Civilized indeed!

From some of the posts herein I have to conclude that many of you believe the tragedy is that they are all female and/or ended up at a garbage dump. Do you think it makes a difference to an aborted fetus whether it is male or female, or whether it ends up in a garbage dump or a sterile bio-hazard bag? No, if they had the privilege of a choice it would be life, no matter the socio-economic ramifications.

No. There are two kinds of people in this world...life at all cost and quality of life. I am firmly in the quality of life camp, and you are in the life at all costs camp. We shall agree to disagree that a life condemned to poverty and misery is no life at all.

who is condemning who? many people have risen out of poverty by their own free will. my family came over as illiterate immigrants. should i have been aborted?

who are you to say that someone living in "poverty" doesn't laugh or have a joyful life filled with love? who are you to say having money equals happiness?

just who do you think you are?
