Almost Two Dozen Members Of Congress Get Farm Subsidies

First Posted: 04/04/11 01:45 PM ET Updated: 06/04/11 06:12 AM ET

Welcome to "The Watchdog," which will keep a close eye on regulatory agencies and how their actions impact the lives of everyday Americans. Though the rules and regulations they write -- from determining how much arsenic is allowable in your drinking water to whether your favorite TV show can drop the F-bomb in primetime -- affect all of us, their deliberations and the way that lobbyists influence their decisions receive very little coverage. To make sense of these debates, follow the implementation of health care and financial reform and decipher the minutia of the Federal Register, "The Watchdog" is on the case. If you have any tips, send them to marcus@huffingtonpost.com.

The Environmental Working Group has determined that at least 23 representatives and senators or their family members applied for farm subsidy payments between 1995 and 2009.

Seventeen of the named recipients were Republicans and six were Democrats. In total, the GOP took in more than $5.3 million, compared to only $489,856 for Democrats.

The biggest beneficiaries of farm subsidies in the current Congress have been:
· Rep. Stephen Fincher (R-Tennessee) $3,368,843
· Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Missouri) $469,292
· Rep. Kristi Noem (R-South Dakota) $443,748
· Sen. John Tester (D-Montana) $442,303

· Rep. Tom Latham (R-Iowa) $330,046

Fincher, a self-described Tea Party patriot, who lists his occupation as "farmer" and "gospel singer" in the Congressional Directory, did not directly say whether he would continue to take subsidies, when asked by ABC News.

"We need a good, better, we need a better farm program and we need to streamline it," he said. "We need to look at many many options. And that's a long way off."

Thank you. Yes, the lobbyist clog their offices. The people don't show up. Now if groups of people showed up at their offices they would out number the lobbyist. What a difference that would make. I have visited their offices before. I promise you, the people weren't there bit the lobbyist were in BIG numbers. Maybe envery body in your neighborhood or apartment building should show up on Capitol Hill. I'm just saying.

And stop spending our hard earned money on "stuff" that corporations "sell" us, convince us we "need". We don't need any of the stuff, and it's ruining our lives and the lives of people across the planet....not to mention ruining the planet itself.....

In a few generations we have managed to "unlearn" everything that used to be usual—being self-sufficient, sustainable. We don't know how to take care of ourselves anymore. We need to relearn those fundamental things.

Corporations, politicians and government agencies lay in the same bed. They care about making money and plundering the planet. Care about us? No chance.

Elected officials taking these kinds of subsidies is a major conflict of interest. Why are we continuing to fatten these people's pockets at OUR expense? What exactly do they DO for the money?

Isn't it disgusting? Why shouldn't I be paid not to grow things on my property? I guess being a politician gives one a huge advantage in tapping into these entitlement programs.

Trust No One said,

I don't see how you ever got your two badges, making a comment like that! Throughout history, every major decision made that cost taxpayers the most has always been by Democrats. Then when Republicans were in office, they made changes that also cost taxpayers. It took both parties to place us where we are today. The blame is squarely placed on the negro in the WH and Congress. Do your research..

why is HP allowing this post to remain????????

What I would like to know is whether these same legislators participated in discussion, debate and vote on any farm aid bill. If they did it is a classic conflict of interest and the ethics committees should be investigating!

Why do these Republicans (and one Democrat) need handouts from the government? They're not rich enough?

I think anyone holding political office should be ineligible for Federal or State subsidies of any kind.

The American Corporatocracy

We live in a country that refuses to even acknowledge that externalities exist. Corporations get away with so much in the U.S. And when their policies harm or potentially harm people or the environment, they cry that any reviews of their policies or increased regulation would harm their business. This is a joke and I am tired of it. Southwest claims that safety checks following their airplanes literally coming apart in midair would be a burden. Transocean gives bonuses and calls 2010 its safest year ever. Massey Energy put the lives of those miners at risk. And what of those abandoned oil and gas wells. Who was operating them? What a disgrace.

Uh hu, uh hu, uh hu...

Also, Welfare Ranching, aka Rolex Cowboys, cost US taxpayers almost 1 BILLION a year in direct and indirect subsidies on our Public Lands alone where they destroy the eco system and displace wildlife:

Fincher says we need a BETTER farm program?  How about NO farm program, bagger?  ANY farm program is big government, right?

My own senator Mark Kirk also receives more than his fair share of taxpayer money as a NAVY reservist.
These people should have to choose - either be in the government and give up all other taxpayer money or stay out.  That simple.  It's blatant self interest to keep worker money flowing into their pockets and nothing else.
