Giants Fan Beaten: Bryan Stow May Have Brain Damage

Giants Fan Attacked

By ROBERT JABLON   04/ 5/11 04:14 PM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES -- Doctors say a San Francisco Giants fan who was beaten and badly injured at Dodger Stadium is showing signs of brain damage and remains in critical condition.

A Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center neurosurgeon said Tuesday that Bryan Stow of Santa Cruz suffered a severe skull fracture and bad bruising to his frontal lobe.

Dr. Gabriel Zada (ZAH-dah) said Stow remains in a coma and that he's showing signs of "brain injury and dysfunction."

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Police Det. Jose Carrillo said investigators are checking an unconfirmed report that three men in Giants gear were struck by the same attackers before Stow was knocked to the ground and hit his head on the pavement.

Stow's relatives said they do not blame Dodger fans for the attack.

never saw anything like this but have seen fist fights break out at Red Sox/Yankees games. I like to root and make fun of the other team and its fans, but not in a serious way. Nothing like this should happen. I wish we could find the perpetrators and see what else, if anything, this was about. Is it a possible 'hate crime?' (the perpetrators were Spanish and the victim white) Drunk? Or just simply the team thing.

I wonder if the brain dead sports fans who were ignoring the "growing elephant" in the United States are now awake from their coma?

I wonder if these two lower than snake s... cretons, or maybe their friends, are the same ones who killed Ronnie Chasen?

This ain't nothing compared to what this country has to look forward to because we've completely ignored the issue too long!

Oh take me out to the ballgame, take me out to the crowd. Buy me some peanuts and crackerjack, then beat the living hell out of me so I never come back.

As a Cardinals fan, I am a witness to one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports, Cardinals vs. Cubs. Every year fans from both teams flock to the opponent's stadium to be a part of that rivalry and in the 31 years I have lived in St. Louis, I have never heard of or witnessed any violent behavior between the two sets of fans.

The same can not be said of the rivalry we had at one time with the Mets, they come to the stadium and scream and get out of control, I have seen near fights and mostly I have seen the Mets fans kicked out of the stadium to contain the violence.

Why is it different? Why do the fans in California have such animosity towards each other over a game? Inquiring minds want to know. I knew kids when growing up who would lose it if their team lost a playground kickball game, are these the kids that grow up to be the attackers like the ones who almost killed this fan?

I simply can not fathom why or how someone could hate anyone so much simply because of which team they supported, it makes no sense.

Being a Giants fan (who will be attending the Dodgers vs Giants game next wednesday at SF) the problem is the demographic that makes up a large percentage of Dodger fans. They are the same fans who are also Oakland Raider fans (and were Los Angeles Raider fans when they were down south for a bit). Alot of them are gang members and of a certain nationality. Its just a fact. You can go to a Giants vs Dodger game at AT&T and you will see this first hand. Add alcohol into the mix and you have lethal situation.

But as a Cubs fan, (all my life-) I must confess the idea of committing mayhem on Albert's bat did occur to me quite often!
That said, you are right. Even in '06 I found myself grudgingly rooting for the Cards!
There is NOTHING that excuses violence by fans- and I damsure hope they are caught and punished to the fullest extent of attempted murder. There is simply NO excuse for the gratuitous violence in society today. Perhaps it's time to reopen some of the 'horror prisons' of yesteryear- like Alcatraz, and putting them back into use.

When the Cards are out of it and the Cubs are not, I also pull for the Cubs, except when you had Dusty as a manager, I can not stand that guy. Now he is with Cincy and they are going to win our division, I have no doubt.

I have a brother who lives in South Carolina who has been a Cubs fan for life as well, he flys in to Wrigley regularly to see them play.

Religion... sports... race... girls... boys... parking spots...sexual preference... you name it. Humans will find a reason or excuse to torture, maim and kill other humans. We are disgusting.

Faved for courage to tell the truth! Please pray for paramedic, Bryan Stow to recover so his family and all of us can witness a miracle and see the perps brought to justice.

As a mexican with some sense, I would have to say you liberals are in denial. If the perps were white, and the victim Latino, everybody in the Huffington Post would have been screaming for a death sentence.

Sport fans are out of control at all levels.

Professional Sports....There are fights in the stands
College Sports.....There are fights in the stands
High School Sports.....There are fights in the stands
Little League.....There are fights in the stands
Probably tee-ball as well.

I mean its a bloody game. I understand having passion for it but not at the expense of safety and life. I love sports but these out of control dumb@$$3s make the game unenjoyable for everyone at ALL levels. What ever happened to SPORTSMANSHIP?!
10:34 PM on 04/06/2011
You forgot one: Politics....There are some fights in the stands. That's the problem w/ politics these days. We can't respect each other for having different views. If someone votes different than I do, I must draw a line in the sand and hate that person, scream at them, call them names etc.

When did we become so divided in this nation.

It's absolutely horrifying and disgusting how depraved people are over absolutely nothing. I'm a HUGE baseball fan, but really, have some sense of proportion!

Don't kid yourself, those guys were looking for a fight for reasons other than baseball.

Some years ago, my Kansas City Royals played the Phillies in a post season game. A Phillies pitcher named Tug McGraw (sp?) came over to George Brett, shook his hand and said, "Well, I hope you guys win if we don't.". I've always liked that quote. I think it says a lot in just a few words. I think it encapsulates good sportsmanship.
11:19 AM on 04/07/2011
Tug McGraw was a great reliever for the Mets amongst others. His famous son is country singer Tim McGraw. When Tug died of brain cancer, he was writing a book. Tim finished it. It is a good read. They were estranged and death brought them together. Book is still in print: Ya Gotta Believe: My Roller-Coaster Life As a Screwball Pitcher and Part-Time Father, and My Hope-Filled Fight Against Brain Cancer [Hardcover]

I just can't understand why so many folks get so ferociously behind professional sports teams. Whether my local team wins the championship or not, there will be zero upside for me. I don't get a raise, my mortgage doesn't go down, I won't live longer, my 401K doesn't instantly become more valuable. Why do people get sooo wrapped up in sports, besides spectacle? Why do folks paint their cars silver and black to support, say, the Raiders? I could see if you owned stock in the team.
11:23 AM on 04/06/2011
I agree with you, I have owned and managed bars and I have seen the ugly side of a fan whose team lost. It's JUST A DAMN GAME GET A LIFE! Shame these sports fans who can give you a players stats can't tell you how many branches of government there are . Fanned
12:07 PM on 04/06/2011
Bread and circuses... bread and circuses...

It would make more sense for folks to face-paint in Archer-Daniels-Midland colors or vajazzle their cars to say Phizer or InBev. If you own stock in these companies and it goes up, you've got something to be proud of and happy about. If the Giants win the WS, who the hell cares? Why? Given how transitory the players are, what exactly are you rooting for? The city? Why? The city is run by a bunch of clowns (Gavin Newsome, I mean you!).

The worst part is that pro sports are a FOR-PROFIT business. Their product: YOU, THE VIEWER. Your attention is the product that's being sold to advertisers.

At least rooting for college sports makes some sense. There's pride in your alma mater.

The only functional use I see in pro sports is that it's a common language that (mostly) men can speak that transcends all economic strata. You can have the CEO of a Fortune 500 talk sports to the janitor and they are on even footing. This can be useful.

For those of you that don’t live in the Los Angeles area issues at the stadium are nothing new. we have the Raider nation that keeps people out of restaurants and bars during football season and the Dodger nation that keeps people away from the stadium the during baseball season. I am a former season ticket holder, FORMER….it only takes a few knuckleheads to ruin what was a great way to spend an afternoon or evening.

At that point- there needs to be some responsibility assigned to the owners, who must encourage that behavior.
Hit em hard in the wallet a couple of times- and watch "fans" clean up their act- or disappear..
