Long Island Serial Killer Search Expands In New York After Eighth Body Found

Oak Beach

OAK BEACH, N.Y. — Detectives searching for a missing New Jersey prostitute have uncovered the remains of eight possible victims of a serial killer along a remote New York beach highway, but said Tuesday that none is the woman they have been looking for.

"I'm just shocked," Sherre Gilbert said in a brief telephone interview after learning from Suffolk County detectives that her sister, Shannan Gilbert, was not among the eight bodies found along Ocean Parkway on Long Island in recent months. "I am still hoping for the best outcome."

Shannan Gilbert, 24, who worked as an escort, was last seen last spring in Oak Beach, near where the latest remains were discovered, after apparently meeting a client she had booked through Craigslist. The bodies of four other prostitutes, all of whom advertised their services on Craigslist and were in their 20s, were found along the same highway by police searching for Gilbert in December.

A fifth body was located last week about a mile from where the first four were found and police on Monday said they uncovered the remains of three more people. Police have not identified any of the most recent victims and have not definitively linked them to the remains found in December.

Detectives suspect a serial killer but so far have no suspects.

The four dead prostitutes were found amid a 4-foot-tall tangle of sea grass punctuated by scrubby pine trees. Authorities have identified them as Amber Lynn Costello, 27, originally of Wilmington, N.C.; Megan Waterman, 22, of Scarborough, Maine; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 28, of Norwich, Conn.; and Melissa Barthelemy, 24, of Buffalo, N.Y.

Although officers have searched the area several times since December, they intensified a search of the 7.5-mile area on Monday. After searching almost exclusively on the north side of Ocean Parkway, which leads to the popular Jones Beach, police academy cadets, K-9 units and other investigators moved to the south side of the roadway on Tuesday, searching a wide swath of sandy beach down to the ocean.

The north side of the highway has proved a challenging search for investigators, who have had to contend with a thicket of underbrush and evergreens, peppered with a variety of trash, from helium balloons to car tires to beer cans and bottles.

Although police were able to quickly rule out Gilbert as a victim because of forensic evidence they had on file in her case, identifying the four recently found bodies could take weeks or longer, officials have said. The New York City medical examiner's office is assisting Suffolk County officials with their investigation.

Gilbert had arranged to meet a client in Oak Beach last May. A resident of the gated seaside enclave told The Associated Press on Tuesday that a woman believed to be Gilbert came to his door around 4:45 a.m. on May 1, pleading for help.

Gus Coletti said that when he attempted to call police, she fled. He said he suspected the woman may have been intoxicated or high on drugs.

A few moments later, an unidentified man in a sport utility vehicle drove past the house and said he was looking for the woman, but then took off. Neither the woman nor the man was seen by the neighbor again.

The client Gilbert had arranged to meet was investigated by police but has not been named as a suspect in her disappearance.

Police said their search of the area for additional victims would resume on Wednesday.

This is why the second amendment allows hookers to carry guns.

Hello Guys Here We Go Again With the Hunt For Another Crazy!!

The good news is this guy should be very easy to determine "Who He Is."

1) The information released identifies the victims commonality (Escorts listed in craigs list.) This is good, because this would have forced the killer to "contact all of the victims; via phone or email."

2) Assemble all the victims call logs into a sorting system; and you will identify a common number to 2 or more victims; if not all (depending on how planned the killer "WAS") which would id HIS phone number..

3) Backtrack through his number and ID other numbers (He would have called/ friends/ job/ and family which would further confirm the commonality of him between his phone contacts."

4) At this point we should know who he is; and who we are looking for.

I think this case as sad as it is; should be very easy to complete and wrap up.. Im sure my comments are and have been though up before, by others, go get him, before he tries to run.. I hope the investigators handle him correctly and locate the missing; for this is the heart of the case, considering catching him should not be that hard in this case, considering he has made so many critical mistakes thus far...

Great, I'm sure the police have not thought of this. You should call them up and let them know, Sherlock.

Sad that I actually had to search around for this story, but who cares if there's not graphic information about whether or not they were brutally tor.tur.ed, etc. Pfft.

I wonder what it says about our society that a man's first instinct when faced with a lone woman requesting help is to call civil police? My opinion: Gated community=fear. Anyway, if I was that dude I would be torn up with guilt. Not that it's his fault what befell her--it's not--but if I knew my choices could have made the difference in someone living or most-likely being murdered by a maniac, that would really bother me. It just struck me as I was reading it probably could have been different.

What a terrible thing. I can't imagine.

You think it's unnatrual to want to call the police?
If I came banging on your door, would you let me in?

Yes, I think it's "unnatural" for a male's first instinct when confronted with a female in distress to be to call an authority figure, usually another male, to take control of the situation. But, my family are country folk who think long and hard before we call the po-po.

So, I didn't say it was good or bad. I just think it's curious and a fairly new phenomenon, and it struck me, personally, as odd (but then not quite so odd when I saw that he lived in a gated community)...and yes: if a lone woman came to my door asking for help, I would absolutely take the risk and bring you inside first before I ever considered calling police because that's how I was raised and because I know first hand how a male-dominated system like law enforcement can work against you when you're not considered a desirable citizen--in my case because I'm lesbian.

If a lone man came to my door, then I would call police first because men are more likely to be criminals, men often vicitimize women, and I can't overpower a man, but I'm a pretty big and tough girl, so women don't threaten me.

This was a person. This was somebody's daughter. Right now somebody is grieving for this woman. Do we have to call her a "prostitute". Can't we call her a "person" or a "woman" or something less awful?

Polish it up all you want...a working girl....she was an adult entertainment employee...she walked the streets....she was self-employed.....it doesn't matter, she was what she was, there is no shame, no blame, she doesn't even care anymore what you call her, if she ever did.

Women become prostitutes for every conceivable reason; some, I am sure, just love sex and making money. It is a real shame that after all this time we couldn't find a way to regulate the sex trade industry to insure the safety, security, and health of those that engage in those activities.

Why is it awful, it's stating the facts.
It's pertinent. This killer is targeting prostitutes.
If there was a killer targeting Yankees fans, you'd want to know that.

Murdering prostitutes is made easier through it being illegal.  You have people in the underworld that are generally not able to reveal what they are doing nor really advertise their business in a way that makes it open.  It is similar to murdering runaways. loners, and other people not as connected to the world.

The killers are able to enter into an unseen world to get their thrills and return to regular life without people noticing.  It appears to be much easier to hide something like this than killing one's wife or something (at least from what I have seen on Investigation Discovery).

The predator knows he has more time to hide his tracks. Because the work is illegal, the individual is not reported missing immediately or even in a timely manner. To reveal a prostitute is missing is to reveal the line of work.
