15 Facts About U.S. Income Inequality That Everyone Should Know (CHARTS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 04/05/11 04:05 PM ET   Updated: 06/05/11 06:12 AM ET

It might have taken a near-historic recession for many Americans to notice our country's rapidly rising levels of income inequality, but the gap between rich and poor has finally gone mainstream, with bloggers, economists and policymakers of all stripes spouting theories on why we should or shouldn't care.

And while the debate continues over cause and consequence, that central claim has proven unshakable: the gulf between the wealth of America's richest and poorest is widening, and few signs show any indication of it slowing.

"Economists are not sure how to fully explain the growing inequality in America," Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz writes in a new piece for Vanity Fair this week. "But one big part of the reason we have so much inequality is that the top 1 percent want it that way."

While it's unclear whether Stiglitz is correct about the intentions of the super-wealthy, what's certain is that the rich have emerged from the rubble of the last 30 years as indisputable winners. Since 1980, middle-class wages have largely stagnated and lower-class wages have declined, while the upper echelons of American society have seen a windfall. A study by University of California, Berkeley professor Emmanuel Saez found that, as of 2007, the top decile of American earners pulled in 49.7 percent of total wages, a level that's "higher than any other year since 1917."

Not all economists agree income inequality is a bad thing. Along with the rising gap, some argue, we've received cheaper goods, longer life expectancies and a generally higher standard of living. Perhaps, argues George Mason professor of economics Tyler Cowen, inequality is less an indication of struggling workers at the bottom than the result of a small section of brilliant businessmen at the top.

"The root cause of income inequality, viewed in the most general terms, is extreme human ingenuity, albeit of a perverse kind," Cohen wrote in an article for The American Interest earlier this year. "That is why it is so hard to control."

One day my daughter came home and was like mom I didn’t eat. The school only lets them charge one day. She said she cried the whole lunch period. About a month later I was like why don’t you invite your friends over. It was always, no. It wasn’t until this school year that she got comfortable enough to have friends. I talked to her one day and I found out she didn’t invite them because she was shame that she didn’t even have her own room. I decided to write a book about a girl in a similar situation to what she was feeling. For a long time she wouldn’t read it. She would open it up and close it. I was like what’s wrong with the story? She was like can you please write about something else? I told her go on and finish reading it Lex , it’s nothing to be shame of. She came up to me last night told me she liked it. I had to show her that she wasn’t the only one that felt that way, and most importantly I understood her. I needed her to understand that I knew what she felt and I cared. I kindly ask you to get this book. It’s a fiction book about two girls in a similar situation.

Hey people - this is not rocket science. Our total employed workforce is 140 million as of the end of March. The bottom third compensated segment of that workforce totals 47 million people. Add 7 million working Illegal Immigrants to that workforce and you have a significant over-supply of labor. And the vast majority of Illegal Immigrants are documented to be working in this labor market. Add in the fact that unemployment for higher compensated Workers is 4.3% whereas unemployment for the lowest paid Workers in the USA runs as high as over 20% and even the most novice economist can see the tremendous downward pressure on wages for the lowest paid Americans while the higher paid Americans who are technically at "Full Employment" and see upward pressure on their wages.

It order to ignore these obvious facts and find other justification for wage disparity it takes truly convoluted, technical analysis on the part of economists. But one must always remember Occam's Razor.

I love this quote, "we've received cheaper goods, longer life expectancies and a generally higher standard of living." Cheaper goods like TV's to further numb the mind to the realities, read Snookie, a longer life expectancy means little when social security and medicare is gutted and the cat food senerio is in play, and the last point, higher standard of living is an outright lie.

Brilliant businessmen? There is nothing brilliant about having friends in high places, buying political power, being greedy and caring nothing about your fellow man.

The rich get richer and the poor eat cat food.

Greed is the religion of the rich in this nation.

What ever happened to gluttony as a sin?

While I think I might be a little more optimistic than you I do feel the Citizens United decision gives large corporations and the top 1% a much larger voice than the rest of us. How do we get our voice heard?
07:30 PM on 04/11/2011
Maybe through a bunch of youtube videos or other Internet communications.

Maybe everyone should stay home from the polls on election day for once as a protest vote to tell the politicians that we are all fed up and won't take it any more. Or maybe write-in votes if they are allowed.

Many are trying to compare the USA today to 1950.. They are asking "where are the jobs"?

In 1950 we had 150 million people.. Today? 310 million. We have 60 million women working, and 15-25 million illegal aliens..Much different world..

Secondly, I also notice many good jobs, even in America use foreign labor..I am thinking of a 5 star hotel down the street from me..To fill manager positions they have all Europeans.. I am good friends with 2 of them, (a german couple) and they claim they were hired because the hotel could not find any suitable Americans..I believe this, as these 2 are intelligent, hard working, punctual ,speak 3 languages, etc..They constantly mention how none of the Americans at the hotel would ever have a job in Germany due to their poor work ethic.

I also notice that there are many subdivisions of 6-$800,000 homes filled with Indians and Chinese.. Come to find out they all work for IBM.. More well paying jobs in the USA, but they choose to hire foreigners..

Good thing we are doing away with all the teachers with masters degrees in places like Wisconsin, so we can continue to keep up!!

JIMBOY wrote:
"White people live in neighborhoods with banks instead of predatory pay day loan sharks, rent to own shops and pawnsters. "

So illegal aliens can come to America with little or no education from their home nation, cannot speak English, yet find a way to buy a car, open a bank account, and buy furniture instead of renting it? And guess what? They even find a way to send billions home annually! Many start businesses.. Many succeed! Yes, even today!

You see, JIMBOY ADMITTED that is how a certain ethnic group spends their money.. If they are making decisions that poorly, who knows what else they are wasting money on..No amount of tax increases on the rich will help them out..
06:17 PM on 04/09/2011
How to succeed:
1. Master the English language.
2. Learn how to manage money
3. Do not feel "entitled" to working and succeeding in one field.

Most of the "poor" or people not doing well, fail with one or all of the above .

Raising taxes will NEVER ensure all Americans make smart decisions, work hard, and speak well enough to even be employable.

While the politicians play games and blame the rich, the government is making close to $1 for every gallon of gas.. Sales tax..Subsidizing farmers not to grow food.Cigarette and alcohol tax...Etc.. THEY are the ones robbing common people. However, by starting a class warfare, they find a very smart way to defect all criticism while they rob the common folk blind.

Success is a matter of cognitive literacy and the relief of ignorance, not a narrow minded chase of money and rank.

Some of the most ridiculous ideas liberals have on this board..

1. Tax the rich at 90%!! Ok, discourage those like Bill Gates from building HUGE corporations that provide tens of thousands of well paying jobs.. How much tax was collected from all those employees? How many earned money from holding the stock?

2. Increase corporate taxes!! Ok, go ahead and tax GM, Ford, etc.. Cars will simply be more expensive, stock holders will not earn dividends, and GM will not be able to compete at all..Less jobs, less taxes collected.. DUH!!

3. Inheritance tax!! Yet another way to kill peoples drive to succeed.. Why build a business if when you die the govt will keep it? Cannot pass it along to your family? Guess what geniuses.. You will simply have fewer businesses to tax!

4. Pay people a living wage.. DUHHH...Ok, pay the girl doing nails 30 an hour plus benefits and pension..The same for store clerks and fast food workers!! EVERYONE! But when you go to spend your money, getting your car washed will cost $100.. The fast food meal will cost $40.. Once again, less businesses, less jobs, and you will have to pay more for everything so you are not any better off.

Some have not succeeded and instead of looking at themselves, they convinced themselves it must be someones fault! So they want to steal from those who did make it..

1. Then where are the jobs? Corporate profits are up, taxes have been declining for decades, yet there are fewer corporate jobs than ever. Garbage comment.

2. Taxes? How about stopping subsidies to these parasites and making them compete in the free market like anyone else?

3. Another wasted effort. Inheritance is a sure fire way to create sloth and waste the labour of millions...look at what happens to the children of almost all corportate barons. Not pretty. Take some of that wasted money and use it to spur research and development.

4. Nonsense. Not paying people enough to live means skyrocketing health care and insurance costs, incurrs excessive debt which doesn't spur true ecomonic growth.

Some have succeeded because they were lucky. Nothing more, nothing less. Your comment is exactly the kind of self-centered nonsense we expect from your ilk. Want to talk about theft? how about payday loans? How about bailing out the rich? How about services charges with no services rendered, and usurious interest for all but the rich?

Pathetic.
03:57 PM on 04/09/2011
1. Well, currently there are also 60 million women working.. Not exactly the 1950's..
2. What if another nation, such as Japan, has subsidies for their auto industry? (They do).. How will we compete?
3. Go open a business and pay people whatever you like.

If you feel ALL successful people are "lucky" then just pack it up and quit trying..

As for usurious banks I agree, that is a major problem.. Kind of ridiculous that our tax money goes to pay interest on the loans the federal reserve creates.
09:19 PM on 04/09/2011
Look.. Banks are the ones in favor of the inheritance tax.. Why? Trap the next generation into debt slavery.. Why are you in favor of that?
01:46 PM on 04/08/2011
A unit of work should be tied to something real, like let's say a loaf of bread. Minimum wage for a day won't even pay for a parking ticket yet the rich rent $1,000,000 a month beach houses. I do not see working people living like trust fund people, ever. I just havent seen it. Like the mad off "victims". They aren't poor, they are crying because they might have to eat at apple bees like you and me.

Let's look at the inheritance tax...Excluding the few billioanires we keep hearing about..

Joe comes to America with nothing.. Saves, and opens a car wash..It does well.. After 40 years he owns several worth a few million dollars..Keep in mind he could have went broke many times, but he made it a success..

Joe dies, then the govt says "Wow, yes, you paid tax for 40 years and employed people.. But now the car wash is ours.. We want 50%.. You are taxed again.. Sell the car washes or cough up 500k.

How on earth is that acceptable?

I think you need to show us your detailed calculations for this inheritance tax.
01:35 PM on 04/08/2011
And Joe got rich on his employees backs and more than likely did not provide them with health insurance or a living wage. Look at the abuse of illegal immigrants. Now joe's kids get to sit back and continue the abuse...and their kids.... And their kids....

Lottery mentality
04:08 PM on 04/08/2011
What? Why don't you go start a business and pay people's health insurance and a "living wage"?

Abuse if illegals? Most send money home where they get 11 pesos for one dollar..I am sure most have bigger nest eggs than the avg American.

If the people do not want to work at the car wash nobody is forcing them..It is basically a job for teens or adults who have no skills at all. Not all jobs are worthy of a "living wage"..I wonder how much you would have to charge for a car wash to cover your expenses..
12:19 AM on 04/08/2011
it's possible to make a lot of money by accident, but nobody holds onto money by accident. That's why so many lottery winners end up broke. It won't matter at all how much of what belongs to someone else is confiscated through govt policy, all of you dimwits that have allowed yourselves to be indocrinated as marxist useful idiots are doomed to die broke.

Keep your government hands off my medicare.

Tell Obama that, he's already cut it once and now he's looking to do it again.

The reason people say to keep your hands off medicare and SS is because we were robbed for it so long, we tend to want our money back.
