Walmart Grocery Delivery: Mega-Retailer May Launch E-Grocery Service

First Posted: 04/05/11 02:05 PM ET Updated: 06/05/11 06:12 AM ET

Walmart may be launching an e-commerce site for fresh groceries to compete with companies like Peapod and Fresh Direct, though the plans are not yet final. Testing will start in the San Jose area.

Walmart already offers grocery delivery in Japan, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

After seven quarters of consecutive declining sales in U.S. stores open more than one year, Bloomberg reports, Walmart is focusing on online business. "Walmart needs to get more serious about e-commerce," said Wells Fargo analyst Matt Nemer.

I will use it if I can pick the brands I want, use coupons when I have them, prices are the same as the local stores and the minimum to use is low like $40. One more thing next day delivery or same day if order early enough. Would not trust them to select my meat items.

I'd be leary about the produce, as well. Packaged foods and canned goods would be fine but only if delivery is free. On the other hand, my goal is to never shop at walmart again and to support just local businesses instead so I doubt I'll ever use the walmart delivery service.

Now I'm confused. Is this a new concept in the US?
Most UK supermarket chains offer an online delivery service.

Tsk: "That's not a quirk of fate, it's known as "bourgeois bunching" -- sorry, deluk, but "bourgeois bunching" is simply not possible in a place known for being "all fur coats and no...". nothing to bunch, there. I'm afraid.

I don't shop at you, Wal-Mart. You'd have to fundamentally change your entire company to even entice me a little. You suck.

I love your positive attitude. Did you eat sour grapes for breakfast? You don't speak for the millions of Americans who shop at Walmart. Others just need to grow up.
02:37 PM on 04/07/2011
Sock puppets are fun!

But really. I've never seen more sour people than those that actually work at Walmart. And the millions of Americans who shop at Wal-Mart who sell out their country for poor quality Chinese slave products are of no concern to me. They're bottom feeding. Slumming.

That's what Wal-Mart sells. Slum lifestyle.

Forgetting for a moment that this is WalMart, the concept has merit. Louis Borders, of Borders Books and Music, attempted a pilot of the idea back in the dot-com boom days. As a virtual shopper you have a running total of your purchases, always know the price of each item, can reuse your previous shopping list as a starting point and of course have the convenience of home delivery. For the business the cost of delivery is off-set by automated warehouses that optimize the order filling process and have none of the usual retail costs of checkout, display, shrinkage, parking, security, greeters ... and so on.

This is a viable model and shopper's will adopt it once they understand the benefits.

That's great! Can we be any more lazy in this country? We need to have our groceries delivered? Wouldn't want to miss Dancing with the Stars or American Idol. I would like to make the offer now if you are in the Pensacola Florida area, I'll come pick your car up, go fill it with gas and return it for a fee. And if you fill mine up also then it's free.

There are actually plenty of seniors and such who would benefit from this service, plus it is more environmentally friendly.

right. because walmart going the way of the dodo would mean those people never work again.

walmart has displaced thousands of mom and pop operations where they weren't enslaved by a centralized one employer in town kind of business. where did these people work PRIOR to walmart?

Well, I know Safeway delivers in my neck of the woods and it's free IF you spend $150....probably easy to do nowadays.

I live less than a 1/2 mile from Wally World. Even if I did not I don't buy groceries there anyway. With the rising prices on food who can afford it? The rich folk? They would not shop there anyway. It's like people who have a taxi deliver their booze from the liquor store.

A loaf of Sarah Lee Honey Wheat bread will cost you $3.69 at the normal grocery chain. WalMart charges only $1.88 for the same bread. Coffee is $10.84 at the grocery store. Walmart is only $8.48. This is the large 29 Oz.container. Cereals that cost $3.59 at the grocey store cost only $2.50 at WalMart. You definitely save more money buying groceries at WalMart.

I'm torn about the whole idea of delivery ... It's an hour to hour 1/2 each week that I could get back, but on the other hand... I often plan my menu's around some ingredient that happens to look good while I"m there.... and there is the fun of discovering something new...

I think I'd do it for the canned tuna and sugar, but I'd still end up at the store for veggies and meat.
Which, when I think about it is how I shop Walmart now anyway... can't beat the prices for staples, but produce and meat leave a lot to be desired..

OK.. I'm in!

Hey, I'm moving to San Jose in June! I'll be sure to be the first person to give Walmart home delivery an emphatic pass.
11:00 PM on 04/05/2011
Do you know the way to San Jose? Welcome to CA if you are moving to our fair state. We have the best governor in all the USA>

Fanned because you are passing on Walmart. I admit I sometimes go there for cleaning supplies and paper items but would never ingest anything from that place. It's so depressing though my heart goes out to the people who work there.

Let's face it, Wal-Mart will suck up any money they can find, even if they have to deliver! How desperate do you have to be to have them deliver? I'll bet they also charge for the delivery! Their greed is unbelieveable.
