Southern Union Community College Shooting: 1 Killed, 3 Injured

OPELIKA, Ala. -- Officials say one person is dead and as many as three others are hurt in a shooting at Southern Union Community College in Opelika, Ala.

City spokeswoman Jan Gunter says it appears a domestic dispute led to the violence Wednesday afternoon at the campus in east Alabama. Authorities are still sorting out details.

Witnesses report seeing a Toyota minivan with three windows shot out outside a building.

Gunter says police have suspect but it's unclear whether the man is in custody.

The school has closed campus for the rest of the day.

Doesn't seem to have anything to do with this being a college. Although the school's website does say no firearms are allowed on campus, so it was a criminal empowerment zone.

Kind of misleading, isn't it? It's not unlike the constant reference to the Tucson rampage having happened at a Safeway, as if Safeway, an establishment where legal, law-abiding, and potentially heroic gun carriers are welcomed, had anything to do with it.

It sounds as if it is only incidentally a campus shooting and might just have easily been at the post office or the Piggly Wiggly. The person I assume was the intended victim--the 36 year old woman--was being dropped off by family members for a class and the shooter followed them there.

Everybody knows that more guns in the hands of more people would have stopped this situation "dead" in its tracks. That way the situation would have been under control quicker because, with the crossfire, the police would have had far fewer witnesses/suspects to question.

Crossfire is a myth. Find one instance of this ever happening. Not when the cops do it. Name one time when someone defending their life ever shot an innocent bystander. I will save you the trouble, it has never happened. Cops have done this because they trigger happy, people without badges are not. Cops can't wait for someone to give them an excuse to open fire. People want to avoid slaughtering human life. The law school in Va. students disarmed a gunman that otherwise would have been cut down had it been cops who caught up with him.

If more people were armed and the cops were abolished there would be much less violence in society.

I think it's more accurate to say that the police are looking for situations where a firearm might be used. You and I don't run down dark alleys to check for criminal activity, but the police do. At worst, police create situations where guns are used in order to end them faster.

Citizens on the other hand avoid conflict, otherwise we would see more crossfire.

According to local news, this was a domestic violence incident, the 34 year-old man turned himself in, and all the victims were of the same family. He shot into their mini-van. There is nothing that any armed person could have done here except accidentally shoot more people.

Another misinformed anti-2nd Amendment talker. I say this because apparently you have no idea what the responsibility of a CHL entails. Does someone with a CHL somehow become a mind reader?

CHL carriers can't predict the future to stop a shooting, and I seriously doubt that had a CHL carrier been present a weapon would've been drawn. CCW holders are taught to asses the situation and draw only if the situation is dire where they're drawing of their concealed weapon won't make a situation worse. A weapon being drawn here would've made everything worse. But then again I'm talking to a person that doesn't want to understand the responsibility of beinc a concealed weapon holder.

How is this an example of why CC on campuses should never happen? Did it say anywhere that the man was a CHL holder? Last time I checked here in Texas you can already carry concealed on a college campus, just not inside the buildings. So far every state that allows CC in public hasn't had an issue yet. So now you're trying to manipulate a domestic violence issue and twist it to your anti-conceal carry agenda, sad.

It is illegal to carry on campus in Alabama nor is there anything in the article which suggests the person that committed the murders had a carry license.

For all we know, they pulled over because of the dispute and it happened to be a community college.

Not to be smart, but there are situations like wild forest where controlled burns are effective in stopping the advance of fires.

Fire, like many things humans create, is a tool that we use to make tasks easier. It's how we use it that determines the good and bad, not the fire itself.

With so few details available, I find it interesting how many people are turning this into the latest round of the gun control debate.

I have a suggestion: until we know the details of who, what, when, where and why of the incident, how about we show a little respect for the victims and not use this tragedy as the latest ranting point for the gun debate?

True, but one of the survivors of the Tucson shooting said in retrospect that he was glad he didn't have his gun with him, because after all the confusion cleared he realized he thought an innocent person trying to help was the shooter and he would have shot them.

I think a solid case can be made for fewer guns in society.
