Sudan Accuses Israel Of Attack; Khartoum 'Reserves The Right To React'

Israel Sudan Attack

First Posted: 04/06/11 10:08 AM ET Updated: 06/06/11 06:12 AM ET

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudan's Foreign Minister Ali Karti on Wednesday accused Israel of carrying out an attack on Tuesday near Port Sudan that killed two people and said Khartoum reserved the right to react to the aggression.

"This is absolutely an Israeli attack," he told reporters.

He said Israel undertook the attack in order scupper Sudan's chances of being removed from a U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.

One of the two people killed in the strike was a Sudanese citizen who had no ties to Islamists or the government, he said.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor declined to comment on the accusation.

Sudanese officials have offered different versions on how the strike was carried out. Police say a missile struck the car near the port city, but a state government official blamed a bombing by a foreign aircraft that flew in from the Red Sea.

Sudanese officials in 2009 said unknown aircraft had killed scores in a strike on a convoy of suspected arms smugglers on a remote road in the east, which some reports said may have been carried out by Israel to stop weapons bound for Gaza.

Sudan is on a U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, but Washington this year initiated the process to remove it from that list after a peaceful January referendum in which the country's south voted to secede.

Palestinian security officials said the target in an alleged Israeli airstrike in Sudan was Abdul-Latif Ashkar, who took over the role of weapons gathering formerly carried out by Hamas official Mahmoud Mabhouh, who was assassinated in Dubai last year. Ashkar was a founder of Hamas’ “aid and logistics department,” which coordinated weapons smuggling to Gaza.

The United States can defend itself by attacking countries that pose a threat. In fact, they seem to do it WITHOUT provocation (the attack on a soverign country after 9/11 before finding the facts proves that point). But Israel is expected to “show restraint” amidst bombings killing of innocent men, woman and children day in and day out. I know. I have relatives living in the region and they are far from unfair or fanatical.

Any retaliation makes a headline in every paper in every country. One must read three, even four paragraphs down before understanding whatever action was taken was in response to Israeli children being killed, or a bombing in shopping center, or whatever other horror that has rained down on them.

While some people argue that that Israel was someone else’s land before 1947 and should be given back, my only question to them is this: would you be willing to give back the United States to the Native Americans? That’s not suppose to be a ridiculous question. Almost every scrap of land on the planet "belonged" to someone else before it’s current “owners.” That’s what wars are usually about. Ownership. Control. Power. Might, not right. And it has been a bloody battle back and forth ever since. Everywhere.

That aside, it isn't even true. Another arguement for another time. Besides, Arabs have over 100 countries. The Jews? One. The size of Rhode Island. It's the location that makes it valuable.

>> Any retaliation makes a headline in every paper in every country.

The country (and the rest of the world( has become cynical at the way in which Israel bombs Gaza with impunity (while maintaining an inhumane and illegal blockade) but running around like chicken little when Gaza fights back.

Israel blew it when they bared their fangs before the world in Lebanon and they blew it in Gaza 2008. Israel doesn't get to play victim anymore.

And as for holding up the US as some kind of example, that doesn't wash wither. America is joined at the hip with Israel and your crimes are our crimes. And most sane people here are critical of the crimes America commits on its own behalf.

>> While some people argue that that Israel was someone else’s land before 1947 and should be given back, my only question to them is this: would you be willing to give back the United States to the Native Americans?

Every time I hear thsi lame argument, I have this to say. The 19th century has been and gone. The world decided that colonalism, genoce and ethnic cleasing were bad ideas. The US has admitted it commit crimes against humaniry and that this chapter is a shameful one.

Just becasue Israel missed out on the 19th century does not mean it gets to have one so it cna play catchup.

In which case, you might want to remind your comrades every time they insist the land only ever belonged to the Jews.

>> Besides, Arabs have over 100 countries. The Jews? One.

Another lame argument. The fact that Bill Gates has 50 billion doesn't give me the right to steal 1 billion from him.

Lame, eh? THE JEWS AREN'T "STEALING' ANYTHING FROM ANYONE. That land DID NOT "belong" to the Arabs. The Bill Gates "argument" is beyond stupid. He worked for that money and earned it. That land was BARREN before the Jews figured out a way to grow vegetables, fruit, trees, etc. When the "Palestinians" (sounds old...isn't) saw it was fruitful and now, boo hoo, they want it back.

Everytime Israel defends itself against terrorism, which they have a right to do (as do we), the headlines are about how horrible they are...barely a word about how they were defending themselves, not provoking. Grant it, the continued building should stop....for now. But you are clearly not interested in truth. Propaganda rules, eh?

this incessant inane hasbaritic babble about who started it and who's going to finish it is tedious in the extreme. It is certainly not in the interest of Gazans to provoke a further massive blitzkrieg from the military might of the US armed Israelis. They would be better off trying to get some benefit for themselves from the exploitation of their off shore gas fields, which seems to be going on under the cover of the blockade. Whenever an outbreak of peace threatens Israel thwarts it. It is in its interest to keep the pot boiling so it can plausibly justify continuing the blockade.

I think everyone here knows that Israel is using acts of provocation to justify moving into the Sinai to insure the blockade of Gaza. Currently, Israel's "Operation Scorching Summer" is underway in the skis over Gaza, yet there is not one word in the US media. I did just read a headline stating that the White House "condemns attacks against southern Israel." What that means is that Israel will be moving into the Gaza. This is a classic PR campaign the part of both Israel and the U.S. to take what they want and lie to the America people while doing it.

Here is another fun article from the Huffpo with no comments allowed:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20110406/ml-palestinians-journalist-abuse/

Here are a few tidbits:

"A report by the New York-based Human Rights Watch said that over the past two years, the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank has stepped up harassment of journalists investigating corruption or seen to be supporters of the rival Hamas militant group. The pressure tactics by the Western-backed government have led to more self-censorship among local reporters, the group also said."

"The abuse takes place "in the context of virtual impunity" for security officials, the report said. And while it is not necessarily ordered by Palestinian leaders, "the utter failure of the PA leadership to address the prevailing culture of impunity for such abuses suggests that they reflect government policy," HRW said."

Should the Arabs wish peace with the Jews, there will be peace. They don't, and have used the "Palestinians" as their lapdogs for the past 60 years to be the wedge which attempts to pry the country apart from the inside. Their attempts to invade and destroy it from the outside fail miserably each and every time, and the poor poor Palestinians seem quite happy to continue to commit generational suicide in their name. The Persians see an opportunity to sit once again at the head of a caliphate, and can't stop but fall over themselves supplying arms and rhetoric to the jihadees and intifadists in hopes of inflicting as much damage to the Jewish State as they can. I say no. That just simply will not do. Should the Palestinians eschew the yoke of their Arab and Persian masters and make an honest trustworthy peace, they shall have it. If not, Israel will continue to build, and blockade, bomb, and every once in a great while, invade. As always, their choice. Tick Tock Tick Tock

I really don't think the Egyptian army is going to let itself be the cannon fodder for Egyptian Islamist dreams.
The last few times it allowed itself to be used like that for a people they don't even like (palestinians), they lost 10s of thousands in the perfect sandtrap for armies called the Sinai.

But, I could be wrong. If so, Israel should keep the Sinai after the next war.

I've never heard before that they "don't even like Palestinians", but I definitely know who else they in fact don't like. You can dream on about the rest - far more likely is that that worthless peace treaty will be going down into a very deep freeze if it lasts at all. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

It won't be. Israel stopped picking fights with real military opponents after 1973. The last time Isrlae ook on Egypt, they lost 3000 fighters, and Israel no longer has the stomach for those body counts.

Found the Huffpo article regarding the bus missile today, but no commenting. I say we do it here.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20110407/ml-israel-palestinians/

Here is a quote from said article:
"Hamas issued a rare claim of responsibility for the bus attack, saying it was in response to the killing of three of its leaders earlier in the week. Usually, smaller militant factions claim responsibility."

So Hamas said they purposly targeted the bus that had only civilians in retaliation for the IDF killing 3 ADULT Hamas terrorists. Well, at least Hamas was honest ;p
