Karzai's Spotlight On Terry Jones' Quran Burning Raises Questions

The dust is settling after five straight days of deadly protests in Afghanistan over US pastor Terry Jones's burning of the Quran, but the political fallout could be just beginning.

There is a growing sense among a number of diplomats here that the demonstrations were provoked by Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Nearly two weeks passed without incident after Mr. Jones and his congregation of about 30 followers burned a Quran in Florida on March 20.

I doubt very many Afghanis have direct access to internet. As I mentioned several times on the main story thread when the rioting began, Karzai was the main instigator by broadcasting the obscure Jones thing in speeches, per multiplier effect the story was exaggerated by imams by proclaiming piles of Korans were burnt. Karzai knows his people and knew what the reaction would be, in any case more than Jones, who'd have a problem locating Afghanistan on a map. Karzai was the one yelling fire in the theater.

One certain indicator of the decline of an empire is increasingly bad choices for puppet government in the colonies.
Karzai, BTW, called attention to this within a week after the first of the "Kill Team" trials - More an more Afghans are recognizing that Americans do not have their interests at heart, and eventually there will come a popular uprising to get us out - Karzai is just preparing to ride that wave in order to survive it. No surprise.
Might be a good idea to leave Afghanistan before that happens -

why is not the question. what are we going to do about it is. i just finished doing my taxes. and the idea that any, and i mean any, of my hard earned money is being taxed to pay for this man's living expenses disgusts me. and it should disgust you too.

Karzai is playing both sides - and now we are giving Afghanistan more money. $50 MILLION to "talk" to the Taliban and get them on board with Karzai and his corrupt government. And here I thought we were fighting against the Taliban - along with fighting Al Qaeda.

The inmates are indeed running the asylum that we call our government.

I did not even know he burned the Quran. It was not covered, so someone in Afghanistan spread the word that we did not even know from our media. Karzai should be gone.

I am so sick of Hamid Karzai! He puts out his hand for more American money while reviling America at every turn. I could care less about what happens in Afghanistan. I think we should bring all of our troops home tomorrow and kick Karzai to the curb.

karzai sparked the violence in a relatively stable part of Afghanistan because it was slated to be one of the first areas the Afghanis took full control of from the US and Nato. Kharzai and his family can't get rich if the Europeans and Americans stop spending money there.
