'My So-Called Life' To Air On Sundance Channel

My So Called Life

Sixteen years after its cancellation, "My So-Called Life" is finally heading back to television.

The critically acclaimed -- but sparsely watched -- cult classic TV series starred Claire Danes as an emotional and confused teenager lasted just one season on ABC, cut due to poor ratings and Danes' unwillingness to continue filming. On Thursday, the Sundance Channel announced that they've acquired the rights to broadcast the show.

“We love My So-Called Life because it’s both substantive and engaging,” the network said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “We’re delighted to bring back the series for the passionate audience that adored the show when it first premiered and we’re thrilled to introduce it to a whole new audience that can enjoy it for the first time. The timeless stories hold up brilliantly.”

The show originally went off air despite the protests of passionate fan groups; the series ended with a cliffhanger, with its questions never answered. Those questions won't be answered now -- Sundance is just broadcasting the single 19 episode season from the 1994-95 season -- but fans should rejoice in revisiting Angela Chase, Jordan Catalano and Brian Krakow.

Danes won a Golden Globe and earned an Emmy nod for the role; in a bit of symmetry, she won a Golden Globe, SAG Award and Emmy in 2010 for her starring turn in HBO's "Temple Gramdin."

The show will begin broadcasting on April 25th at 11 PM.

A work of collective genius. A show so perfect it had to die.

The single best moment of the series was when Patty (Bess Armstrong) just drops the standard TV sitcom-ish "what the- where did you go- how did you get over here-" stuff from a ghost story and straight up asks Juliana Hatfield, "how did you die?" The matter-of-fact acceptance that she knows she is talking to a dead girl is indelible in my mind. And of course, shortly thereafter in the ep, "here come the waterworks.."

I got the entire series on DVD ages ago and watch it at least once a year, but I'm glad more people will get a chance to discover this incredible show on Sundance now. Even at just one season, it continues to be one of the greatest, funniest, most realistic and thought-provoking family dramas of all time...next to, "Freaks and Geeks".

"Sometimes I think if my mother wasn't so good at pretending to be happy she might be better at actually being happy."

"Sometimes someone says something really small and it just fits into this empty place in your heart."

"This life has been a test. If this had been an actual life, you would have received instructions on where to go and what to do."

Couldn't believe this gem had been gone for 16 years. Loved the show. To me, it was the only one I ever saw that told the truth about high school life.

If you remove the monster from Buffy, the characters on that show represented the teen years pretty well too :)

This is a wonderful TV show! Managed to stumble across it and ended up buying the box set. I'm 20 years old, so from my perspectively, I can happily say it really stood the test of time. (albeit not much time) It's very engaging, with wonderful characters you really care about and great story lines. It's a real shame it was cancelled so soon.

me too, but i'm still glad sundance picked it up. if nothing else, it will mean a little residual $$ for the people who made a terrific, underrated show.

this was my high school sophomore junior year, oh the memories. love the show.

Same here. There wasn't a lot of smart and compelling tv for our age back then. Now MTV has "16 and Pregnant" or the semi-pedophilic "Skins." And they actually showed videos back then too.

Just finished a marathon of this show via Netflix, reawakening my teenage infatuation with Jared Leto's eyes... I think this show defined my lifetime addiction to emotionally distant men. I should mind, but honestly don't. As with Angela's obession with Jordan Catalano, the moments when they turn and really look at you? Those tend to be more rewarding than any profession of affection from a more open type of person. Not that words of love from someone you care for should ever be unimportant, but when a person has difficulty expressing thier emotions and goes to the effort of letting you know how they truly feel?

There is nothing that can top the heart leaping elation of that moment, and the warm fuzzies that the memory will bring for months, or even years afterward.

*cough* Anyway, yes. Leto. Gorgeous eyes. Good excuse to check out 30 Seconds to Mars.

Might have to find out whether I have Sundance...

yeah, he's yummy! I agree there's something so romantic about a distant, silent type. I was definitely into him when I first watched the show at age 15. I wish he still looked that way now, but he's embraced the emo trend. ugh!

There is never an excuse to check out 30 Seconds to Mars. The band blows. Jared Leto the actor is waaaaayyyyy better than Jared Leto the musician.

Such an amazing show. I notice how much longer it seems compared to today's dramas. All these commercials are the reason I only use Hulu and Netflix these days. Network and Cable are unwatchable!
