New York Times Paywall Cost $25 Million To Make

paidContent:

Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. insists a $40 million estimate for building New York Times (NYSE: NYT) Co.'s pay scheme is "vastly wrong". But that's where the NYTCo chairman stopped in a Q&A at Columbia University earlier this week. I think I can come close to filling that gap, despite the continued lack of comment on the specifics by Sulzberger or other company executives. Based on my reporting, the real number is closer to $25 million.

Folks, just download a bookmarklet that clears cookies for the current site you're reading. You have to have cookies to read NYT, but after you read, the bookmarklet deletes the cookie (logging you off the site), and the next time you go to the page, you'll see you aren't logged on anymore, and your page count is reset to 0. I've been using it for a week and it works like a charm. No need to pay. I've read about 100 articles for free. (You can find the bookmarket by Googling for it; one site lets you just drag it up to your bookmarklet menu.)

Far too much. I paid and the stupid thing still won't give me access. Now I am chasing around trying to get the management at NYT to do something about it since the order takers have absolutely no clue about how to fix it. So, I suggest you hold off a month or so if you were considering subscribing, because their paywall system is terrible!

I paid $20 per month for the IPad app. and it's worth every dime and has always been acknowledged as the best paper in the country with writers who have won many Pulitzer prizes. It's much cheaper than buying the paper every day and easier to read. The Huffpost is fun but frivolous and biased.

I would pay a fee to read HuffPo. I won't for the NYT or WAPO.

Love to see a detailed list of how you spend 25 million to charge people to see your online content. Me? I got it for free from Lincoln. Thanks Lincoln!

Who cares? It's their money and it is going to be wasted on the firewall.

Last ditch effort few will pay to read their rag. The books best sellers list aren't even accurate anymore. Want to know the Best Seller and good review go to Amazon. Real reviews by real people. Bye NYT

Amazon wants you to buy the book; that's how they make money. You really think their book reviews are honest? Naive.

Huh, I think dennnisrs is talking about reviews by "real people" (in the comment section) and not by Amazon staff.

Its good to know readers are being gouged for a reason.

Since I am solicited for the weekend Times at many web sites, enticed with free internet access to the paper, I'm going to assume readership has declined markedly.

Their business model is broken, and they have failed to hire people who know how to make a profit on the internet. This move will just send people elsewhere for content. Considering what an abysmal job they did reporting about wall street corruption and the Iraq war mis-informaiton campaign, they have proven themselves pretty unreliable and irrelevant. The clock is ticking on the NYT.
