Ben Affleck In 'The Great Gatsby'? Star In Talks For Tom Buchanan

So we beat on, boats against the current... with Ben Affleck in a 3D big screen adaptation of what is perhaps the Great American Novel.

Deadline reports that Affleck is in talks to join the star studded, Baz Luhrmann-directed epic "The Great Gatsby," negotiating to play the part of Tom Buchanan. Tom Buchanan is Daisy Buchanan's philandering husband, a rich but emotionally shallow man.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Affleck and the film's producers must work around a scheduling conflict; he's slated to direct his next film, "Argo," this fall, around the time Luhrmann intends on kicking off "Gatsby."

If Affleck sign on, he'll be joining a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. The film will shoot in Australia and be shot in 3D.

Affleck was last seen in the recession drama, "The Company Men," about a man who loses his job but finds something bigger.

Just my opinion but I think he is a bad actor. Maybe he might be a good writer but I would not pay money to see him act.

IMO DiCaprio doesn't have the aristocratic look required of Gatsby. Think Jude Law in Talented Mr. Ripley.

Ben Afleck would be a perfect Tom Buchanan. It's too bad Gwyneth Paltrow isn't ten years younger because she was born to play Daisy.

So true on Gwyneth when she was younger. She was captivating on screen and the role would fit her perfectly. She just doesn't wow me now like she did when she was younger in roles.

Love me some Ben. He's really turning into a great director. Gone Baby Gone fantastic. But I loved the Town. He directed and acted in it. Very impressive and selected a great cast.

Yeah, I don't go to 3D anyway. Though the technology is better than when I tried it years back, those stupid glasses take away from my willing suspension of disbelief. I ALWAYS know I'm watching a movie. Daisy and Jay? The acting and the script better be GREAT or no amount of effects or even explosions are going to help.

I've seen a lot of overly hyped movies come and go starting with the Elizabeth Taylor's Cleopatra; and, sadly I can't think of one that didn't end up just being a clebrity/personality curiosity. Fitting, i guess, because in some ways we Americans need to see our celebrities crash and bumble around. We do so thrive on survivor tension. It's in our genetics, our unique DNA.
