Apple Confirms Verizon iPad 2 Glitch

Verizon Ipad 2 Glitch

First Posted: 04/08/11 08:13 PM ET Updated: 06/08/11 06:12 AM ET

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has confirmed a glitch with the Verizon iPad 2 that is causing users to experience connectivity problems.

The Wall Street Journal reports:

Apple says a "small number" of Verizon iPad 2 customers are experiencing connectivity problems, acknowledging the problem after message boards filled this week with customers complaining they are having difficulty accessing Verizion Wireless's 3G data network.

An Apple spokeswoman says the company is investigating the issue. She wouldn't say how many iPads were affected, or how soon a fix would be sent out. Verizon declined to comment, deferring to Apple.

Apple's discussion forums have had a flurry of posts from users who say that they are having trouble connecting to Verizon's 3G network using their iPad 2.

Nixxon2000 wrote in the "iPad 2 WiFi + 3G Verizon Cellular Data Issue" forum, "When I try to connect to the cellular data it just says iPad or Searching in the top of the screen. It did work last night. If I do a hard reset I can get it to work. Switching Airplane mode on and off to reset the modem does NOT work."

The same user detailed an interaction with Apple's Genius Bar: "I actually spent 2hrs at the Genius Bar last night. I was able to duplicate the problem. They have no idea why its doing that. They did everything, re-provisioned the account, updated the software (twice I might add), REPLACED THE IPAD 2! They think its an IOS issue."

The Journal suggested, "One fix circulating around the Internet has been to turn the cellular data switch to on and then reboot the tablet by turning it off and back on again. Another message board user has suggested erasing the content of the iPad after backing up the data, which others have commented as effective."

Apple users recently reported an iPhone 4 issue that caused the phone to take photos without their knowledge. See what users' main complaints about the iPad 2 have been here, then tell us whether you've experienced the glitch--or a different one--below.

I have had a hard time connecting 3G, while traveling in my car. I was told, today, to try turning airplane mode on, but this article says that it doesn't work. I hope they get this worked out soon. And, no, I'm not sending my IPad 2 anywhere. I love it! they just have to iron out the glitches.

Well gosh, I guess those folks having such problems can always send me their iPad if they don't want it anymore.

It sounds to me that the issue it Verizon's internet platform, since no one with AT & T that I've heard of is experiencing this.

I swear this is an Apple forum!!!
As much as i can't stand the fandom of the Applebots, why do we need an article everytime there is a 'glitch' or 'malfunction' of an Apple product... NE1 that's not a fanboi actually realizes that their products are tech and as such will always have shortcomings or glitches. So do all other tech products, yet they dont have a million articles dedicated to their glitches...

I have the same IPhone issue on my Ipad2. FaceTime on the IPad2 will also take a picture of you without permission. Very creepy.

Just thought of this because I experience this problem with my Sprint phone when I cut off the GPS. If the mobile find me or GPS is off it might be hard for the signal to find you for service.

Haven't experience any problems thus far. I only turn verizon on when I'm away from home and it works immediately, though I do recall verizon wanting to know where the primary usage of it will be. I think there are problems in certain areas where coverage does not extend. The same thing with Virgin mobile broadband. It may be that people are giving their addresses where the coverage is good but when they leave that area it beyond Verizon's coverage.

"I actually spent 2hrs at the Genius Bar last night."

OK, OK, Mr. Trump.
Everybody has already heard how smart you are.
Give it a rest, already.

Really?

The Genius Bar is the name of the help desk at Apple stores. Like Geek Squad for Best Buy.

OK, I admit it was a weak joke.

I want to thank all those that buy early and find the bugs. I will wait another year to decide on a tablet if I need one. The thing is I get so bored with a tablet and I don't freaking know why. Same with phone that have touch screens (samsung galaxy).. cool for a couple of days and then I am back to my blackberry bold.

I love my Apple products, the iPod touch and the Macbook. The love stops there. I learned long ago that Apple, like most major tech manufactures, engages in shady consumeristic-based upgrading and branding practices. They release a buggy initial version to much fanfare, and then sometimes only 6 months later release an "upgraded" model that has the basic functionality that should have come on the first. And funny enough it usually has even more bugs than the original.

I mean this is a perfect example. The iPad 2 was supposed to be the latest and greatest, with internet and camera functionality! I've only had those two abilities on my Blackberry for a half a decade. And now it turns out that there is a major glitch in some of the products that doesn't allow you to use the internet. It's rather reminiscent of the iPhone 4 not being able to pick up a wireless signal when you held it in your hand.

When it comes to Apple products, wait a few generations until Apple decides to release all the technology they've had from well before the initial product launch. Then, you aren't left buying a $30 rubber cover to help your phone pick up a wireless signal.

As an iPad 1 user, I just have to say GOOD. You come out with this 6 months after the first one, literally a few months after I got my iPad 1, and you make us feel like our machine is obsolete.

It's not, I don't want the video camera, and  I don't need it to be thinner (it is quite thin already)

Apple doesn't "make" people feel like the first one is obsolete. All electronic companies come out with new versions every year. I would think that people would be used to that by now, after how many years we've all owned electronic devices?

The problem with Apple's habit of refreshing hardware quickly is not one of the hardware itself, it's the fact that they routinely stop software support for older versions.

The original iPhone was still being sold less than 3 years ago, but software support has ceased.

This isn't just an Apple phenomenon in the phone market, but Apple apply the same philosophy of forced obsolescence to all their product lines.

Oh no! There must be a mistake. It can't be. It must be something the user is doing. Apple is never at fault. Can you imagine criticizing the divine? (yes, I am being sarcastic).

Say it isn't so. So much for the myth that the kinks are all worked out by the second generation.

That's a new kink. My original iPad doesn't do that.
