Lucky Paws Animal Adoption Finds Home For Blind Dog And His Guide

Guide Dog

To some, the story of Scarlet and Rhett is a perfect example of selfless love.

No, not the famed couple of "Gone With The Wind." In this case, Rhett is a blind Miniature Pinscher and Scarlet is a Chuhuahua mix that serves as his guide.

KRQE reports that the Lucky Paws Animal Adoption in Albequerque, N.M. is offering a double dose of canine companionship -- a blind dog and his seeing-eye companion.

Scarlett wears a bell on her collar, which allows blind Rhett to safely follow. She leads him to find food, relieve himself outdoors, and even play. William Pierson, a counselor at the adoption center, said that their partnership has been beneficial for the both of them.

"It's safe for him," Pierson said. "She's never led him astray."

The duo has since been adopted by a nurse who had previously cared for another blind dog.

i just watched a story about this on Dogs 101, but they were mastiffs. The female was blind and the male takes total care of her, it was amazing to watch.

without blinking an eye........(no pun intended )

You've made huge generalization and I take offense to it.

Everything I have that helps me live a better life was made by another human. Unlike you, I'm thankful for them.

Definitely an "ahh for the day" story. I was happy to read that a nurse adopted both and she had experience with a prior blind dog. I'm also hoping dear Rhett IS put on that diet :-)...it appears he finds the food bowl just fine :-).
Precious little animals.

I love uplifting stories like this. It actually reminds me of a book I enjoyed as a child, "The Trouble wit Tuck." It was about a dog that was losing his eyesight, who was eventually given new sight through a retired guide dog. Tuck could resume his usual routine, with the guide dog keeping him safe.

A beautiful story. Yet has its roots in human domestication of dogs. We have breed dogs that have an extremely strong social sense (starting point is the pack nature of the ancestrial wolf). Dogs are one of the few animals that can understand human gestures and human moods. It comes as no surprise that one dog understands the needs of another.

This story would have been even better had anyone cared enough to proof it. Our great town is ALBUQUERQUE. A moment spent proofing would have been such a caring gesture.

I'm from Albuquerque and now live in Louisana and can tell you it's like the diffrence between night and day when it comes to animals. Here in Louisana animals are treated like garbage and the shelters are dirty and dark and just nasty. I work with a woman who does animal rescue and some of the dogs and cats we get have such sad stories of neglect and abuse and just being thrown away because they are no longer cute puppies.
When I lived in Albuquerque and was involved with animal rescue it was in it's infancy, but over time to see the how civilized ( yes, there are still abuse cases and neglect and animal fighting) Albuquerque has become with it's tougher laws and animal rescue groups makes me so proud. Now, if I can just convince a lot of the people here that animals should be treated humanly then Louisana may take one step closer to not being a third world attitude state. We do not even have an animal control officer of a shelter in my Parish, that is how little people care. I love the video showing the animal shelter, what a beautiful and safe clean place for the animals.

Once you "fall in love" with a dog you are never the same. It's easy to get over lost loves of the human kind, but being touched by a dog changes you in the best of ways. They may leave us in body, but never in spirit.
