UPDATE: Missing AP Photographer Altaf Qadri Found Safe In Libya

Libya

04/10/11 03:47 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK -- An award-winning Associated Press photographer covering the conflict in Libya was located Sunday after being missing for more than a day, the news agency said.

Altaf Qadri was safe and unhurt, and was on his way back to the AP offices in Benghazi, according to John Daniszewski, the agency's senior managing editor for international news and photos.

Qadri became separated from his colleagues near the eastern Libyan city of Ajdabiya while on assignment Saturday, according to the AP.

"We're very pleased that he has emerged unharmed while covering the violence in the area," Daniszewski said. "We thank all the people around the world who offered good wishes for his safe return."

Qadri, 35, won a World Press Photo award this year for his poignant photograph of relatives mourning over the body of a man killed in a shooting by Indian police in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Qadri, an Indian citizen, is a native of the Kashmiri city of Srinagar. He studied science at Kashmir University and worked as a computer engineer before taking a job as a staff photographer at a local Kashmiri newspaper in 2001.

In 2003, he joined the European Press Photo Agency and covered the conflict in Kashmir. In 2008, he began working for The Associated Press in the Indian city of Amritsar. His work has appeared in magazines and newspapers around the world and has been exhibited in the United States, China, France and India.

think that this is an interesting article because it shows that just because a journalist is award winning like Qadri, who won a World Press photo award this year, doesn't mean that they have more protection or get any special privilege when reporting in a war zone. This article proves that unilateral journalists need to have better protection when reporting in foreign countries. They often don't get the basic safety that is necessary to survive in a country under siege. This is one of the many stories I have read about a journalist being captured or who has gone missing in Libya. These journalists are putting their lives on the line to tell the public what is happening abroad but they often don't get the respect that they deserve. Unilateral journalists should have the same protection that embedded journalists get when in a military zone.

I am satisfied he is 'found' but do question his being 'lost' just because he was separated from the rest of his journalists. Maybe he got an offer he couldn't refuse. Could have been a guest of some fine bedouin or kind restaranteur. So many kind people there who would love to make him feel @ home while serving him food and drink so they can tell him their stories or seek help finding a lost loved one. Certainly, he will write a book about his experience or @ least a 60 minutes interview.

to Distract from: The workers revolt in WI, the sale of nuclear power tech to Chile even as the Japanese disaster proves nukes are not safe, and spending cuts, the 2 other wars, you name it.

Libya working out exactly as Obama's critics predicted, rebels losing, Gaddiffi will remain in power, no fly zone has become air support for rebels and generals talking about committing ground forces to the Libyan civil war. Sad.

Instead of saying what Obama's critics is sad try to change from Obama to somebody else for less bad news.
