Libya Costs For U.S. Now $608 Million

Libya Cost

PAULINE JELINEK   04/11/11 12:14 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon said Monday the military intervention in Libya cost the U.S. an estimated $608 million in the first few of weeks of the operation. Spending is down significantly, though not as much as expected.

Defense Department spokeswoman Navy Cmdr. Kathleen Kesler said the price tag is for spending through April 4 – or for 17 days of the mission, the most recent figure available.

Officials also revised an earlier statement on what the figure includes. They said previously it was only the added expense of the operation and did not count other costs, such as paychecks for U.S. sailors, airmen and other forces because they would have been deployed somewhere in the world anyway.

On Monday, however, officials said the number does include pay and other normal deployment costs.

The $608 million estimate shows a large drop from what the U.S. spent in the early days of the multinational operation that started March 19 – roughly $55 million a day in the first 10 days, then about $8.3 million a day in the seven that followed.

Still, very rough projections late last month estimated costs would decline even more than that as the U.S. handed lead of the operation to NATO. The alliance also is to conduct most of the bombing missions. Officials didn't explain what caused the higher-than-expected rate of spending. It's possible at least part is due to the fact that the full transition to NATO went a little slower than expected.

It is the second time the Pentagon has released costs for setting up the no-fly zone in the North African nation and protecting civilians from strongman Moammar Gadhafi as he resists a movement to oust him.

Officials late last month said the added spending from March 19 through March 28, the first 10 days of the intervention, was $550 million. About 60 percent was for munitions. The remaining costs were for the "higher operating tempo" of U.S. forces and of getting them there.

At that time, Kesler said that future costs were "highly uncertain" but that officials estimated they'd see added costs of about $40 million over the following three weeks as U.S. forces reduced their mission to providing refueling, intelligence and other support. But rather than $40 million over three weeks, the cost was $58 million over seven days, according to the new figures through April 4.

There was no breakdown available Monday for how the $58 million was spent from March 29 through April 4.

Spending 608 million somewhere outside of our borders is not something I want to do unless it is obsolutely necessary but we spent more than that for every 2 days in Iraq for almost the entire time we have been there...at the same time we cut taxes for hedge fund managers to 15% so after they rigged the system to bankrupt pension funds and the american public in general they could keep most of it. It's kind of like burning your house down and then complaining that your garbage can has a dent in it.

Borrowing more money from China to fight more wars and creating more animosity towards America.

And America, like Sheen, thinks it's winning.

This is beyond comprehension. How can we be involved in another war? Where are the protests? I guess the protestors are to busy with pro union rallys. Talk about flip-flopping. So you guys are not really anti war. Man I actually believed you guys. What other principles or convictions are you willing to sell out?

It's not quite a "war" on the same level as Afghanistan and Iraq. There are no ground troops. It's not likely to become a quagmire as much as it's a money-sieve.

That said, do you see a mass number of "liberals" on this board applauding and cheerleading? I sure don't.

I obviously lack comprehension of the english language. Perhaps Webster should redefine the definition of war. While we're editing, any suggestions in what to define armed civilians and national security, I now know that oral sex isn't sex and that civilians killed in Iraq are actually murders. What are the civilians killed in this military action called? I have an idea. Since the average liberal has a greater understanding of the english language, as in all things, please publish a liberal dictionary. It would really be beneficial to the world if you could educate us. That way we can all be on the same page. I think this will solve a lot of our problems. Please take due diligence though, once something is defined, that has to be the benchmark.

A point was brought up that there was an attempt to hide the costs of the earlier wars. Very true; however, the media made sure that the number of cassulities ond wounded were printed every day. With the exception of friendly fire, is there any reports of the Admit it, this is another santized war

why has a revolt broken out?

“The answer, which I have been intensely researching for the past month is not a simple one.

“The revolt started in Benghazi in eastern Libya. A very important point not mentioned anywhere in the international media is the fact that due to geographic location, being one of the closest points to Europe from the African continent, Benghazi has over the past 15 years or so become the epicenter of African migration to Europe. At one point over a thousand African migrants a day were pouring into Libya in hopes of arranging transport to Europe.

“The human trafficking industry, one of the most evil, inhumane businesses on the planet, grew into a billion dollar a year industry in Benghazi. A large, vicious underworld mafia set down deep roots in Benghazi, employing thousands in various capacities and corrupting Libyan police and government officials. It has only been in the past year or so that the Libyan government, with help from Italy, has finally brought this cancer under control. With their livelihood destroyed and many of their leaders in prison, the human trafficking mafia have been at the forefront in funding and supporting the Libyan rebellion. Many of the human trafficking gangs and other criminal elements in Benghazi are known for racist pogroms against African guest workers where over the past decade they regularly robbed and murdered Africans in Benghazi and its surrounding neighborhoods. Since the rebellion in Benghazi broke out several hundred Sudanese, Somali, Ethiopian and Eritrean guest workers have been robbed and murdered by racist rebel militias, a fact well hidden by the international media.

Heck, dollars or donuts. The Chinese already won.

It is estimated there were 70 Chinese enterprises with approximately 30,000 employees in Libya before the current civil war.

Now, they are patiently sitting on the sidelines, watching the fireworks, until they can pick up their game pieces.

Why are we now keeping daily track of the costs in L:Libya?  We were in Iraq for years and pretended it cost us nothing.  We lost billions of dollars stolen off a palate at the airport and the media just said oh well, but now we get a tally every day.

Sounds kind of biased.

Make no mistake, war is a profitable business, on many levels there are various interests who benefit. Private contracts are extremely lucrative.

Exactly.
It was a profitable business back in 2003 but I don't remember a daily tally being taken or was it considered un-American to do so back then?

I agree.
This is like what the press did way back with Clinton-the press was calling it "wag the dog" but it turns out a no fly zone in Iraq was cheaper than an invasion.

After the costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan genocides, and the present Libyan expense, and the bailouts of looted corporations, our elected officials want to take more and more away from Social Security and all public services with much acquiescence and support from so many. With that in mind, our public resents and ridicules those who call our public, "stupid". Hey! guess what! our public IS stupid! The rat race that is the voting pattern of our public alternates between Republican, Democratic, and now, Conservative, with all three major parties gradually causing and/or allowing the diminishment of public services with the increased funding of agendas that serve only corporations, executives and politicians. Our public isn't stupid?!

While we were spending tax dollars saving a fledgling Libyan democracy, our own national infrastructure, employment, and economy were suffering. In California, the $608 MM would have helped our state bandage the hemorrhage of teachers and instructors in K-12 and community colleges. The numbers: 140,000 freshmen will be turned away from public CC's this fall.
