So let me get this straight, a middle-aged woman (common for hair to thin at this time) who has experienced hair loss before, announces that she now has hair loss because of "Brazilian Straightening," which is not even an actual brand product but a general term...I would love to know what product was used on her, if it was done properly (impossible to know unless it was filmed) and what her Doctor says about it causing hair loss.

It is human behavior women with curly hair want straight hair and women with straight hair want curly hair. Same thing with breasts, height, eye color etc..all of the features we are born with. This is as old as time, however, has escalated due to media and whom and what they percieve as beautiful. Love yourself, be healthy and move one...

After watching Chris Rock's doc "Good Hair", I'm convinced that the torture we put our hair through is a huge waste of time, money and health.

It was upsetting watching "Good Hair" the amount of time, money and chemicials they spend and use on their hair. Watching the little girl get her first "perm" was heartbreaking. Another little girl has been taught by her mother the God given hair on her head is not good enough. Very sad.

Perhaps her Portuguese was not so good and she mistakenly asked for a Brazilian wax on her head by mistake.

My hairstylist keeps trying to tell me this procedure is safe for me. I keep replying, "Google it; H no."

I feel her pain. Used chemicals for 30 years to straighten my curls, until it fell out. Never again!

I checked out your blog! Love natural hair sites, blogs, videos, stories, etc...Congratulations!

Thanks Yam716. Seriously, in the three decades (!) I was straightening my hair, I never DREAMED I would love it this much. I think it really has to do with self acceptance. Someone once said to me, "you never have a bad hair day." I think it's because I let it do what it is supposed to (and wants to) do! No more fighting. Much, MUCH easier!

I don't know how many times I've repeated this on hair and beauty blogs. Why would anyone think that embalming your hair strands is healthy?

Well, for one thing, Alan, unless you're a woman with curly or kinky hair, it affects you in no way. For me, it may well have changed my mind about the process.

Spend a humid day with the unruly locks, and you'll understand. But I had considered this process. Now, maybe not...

It's called "Brazilian Blowout" and it was just on tonight's news here in Florida. Evidently, it contains formaldehyde and women have been going home and passing out from the fumes. In some salons, it's applied with both the hairdresser and the customer wearing gas masks.
