Michelle Obama Wants You To Help Military Families

NANCY BENAC   04/12/11 05:59 PM ET EDT  AP

WASHINGTON — Drawing in everyone from Best Buy's Geek Squad to the Afghan war commander fired by her husband, Michelle Obama ramped up her campaign to support military families on Tuesday and prodded everybody else in the country to get in on the act.

The first lady, joined in the East Room by the president and Vice President Joe Biden and wife Jill, launched "Joining Forces," an initiative to help military families who face a long list of unique challenges, such as moving around a lot and having a parent or spouse facing wartime perils far away.

Mrs. Obama didn't dangle federal grants or incentives, rather a call to be civic-minded.

"This is a challenge to every segment of American society not to simply say thank you but to mobilize, take action and make a real commitment to supporting our military families," Mrs. Obama said.

President Barack Obama, for his part, said it was time to do more to support "the force behind the force."

"They, too, are the reason we've got the finest military in the world," he said.

Over the past year, Mrs. Obama's primary focus has been an ambitious campaign against childhood obesity, in which she urged businesses, non-profits, school and others to get involved in fighting the problem. Now Mrs. Obama, working closely with Mrs. Biden, wants to use that same model to tackle military family issue.

As a down payment, the White House released a list of companies and groups that already have signed on to the effort.

For example, Best Buy's Geek Squad will help military families use technology to connect with loved ones who are deployed, Sears and WalMart will offer transfers to employees who are military spouses who have to move, and the national PTA will expand efforts to help military children adjust to new schools.

Mrs. Obama, in an interview with The Associated Press, said she first got to know about the special challenges facing military families during the 2008 presidential campaign, as she met with military spouses while participating in roundtable discussions with women.

"I was so shocked by the fact that I didn't recognize those voices, that those stories were so new to me," she said. "I thought, I can't be alone, and these voices need to be lifted up."

Mrs. Obama said she decided then that it was appropriate to use the White House "megaphone" to lift the "cloak of invisibility" that too often leaves families struggling on their own.

Mrs. Biden, who joined Mrs. Obama for the interview, said the two will know the initiative is a success when support for military families "is integrated into the culture of America" and becomes second-nature.

With the next presidential campaign getting under way, military families are a motherhood-and-apple pie issue that can only help burnish the image of a first lady whose patriotism was called into question by critics on the right during the last campaign.

The first lady said she's ready for whatever the coming campaign brings, but hasn't given it much thought yet.

She said the military families initiative is something that motivates her "to want to do this job really well.... That's what you learn when you campaign. You learn what people need and then you can actually do something."

The effort was welcomed by Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, a nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"These families have been sacrificing for almost 10 years," said Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff. "It's time for the rest of America to help shoulder their load."

The White House has announced that retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who was fired by the president, will be part of a three-person advisory panel that oversees the effort from the Center for a New American Security, a nonpartisan think tank. McChrystal was ousted by Obama last summer after he and his aides were quoted making dismissive comments about their civilian bosses in a Rolling Stone magazine article.

Patty Shinseki, wife of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki, also will be part of the advisory panel, along with a third person yet to be named.

White House aides said the Obama administration already had taken a number of steps to ensure the government does more to support military families, such as setting up an Office of Service Member Affairs in the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to help military families with special financial challenges.

The first lady and Mrs. Biden plan a two-day, four-state tour to promote the initiative starting Wednesday in North Carolina and including stops in Texas, Ohio and Colorado.

At various stops along the way, they will bring in celebrities including Jessica Simpson, Nick Jonas, Martha Stewart, Sesame Street's Elmo, and the Discovery Channel's Mythbusters to generate interest in the effort.

Michelle Obama was first surprised by the special challenges in 2008 of military life? We've been at war for over a decade. This is a problem with electing anyone from the stratum of life that has no idea of what being in the military is like. Electing a Commander in Chief of one of the most powerful Armed Forces on the planet, but him and his wife are surprised by the challenges that military life entails. I probably won't ever have much respect for anyone that has never voluntarily put themselves in harm's way, but will quickly send others to do so. A lot of that stress and challenge comes from when Michelle's husband lies about pulling troops out of the sand box and puts 10's of thousands more into it. It's a real downer to wonder whether or not a family member is going to be blown up on any given day. This is surprising? I guess when you're used to making $316,000 a year like she was before private interests bought the Eagle Throne for her husband she really didn't have to worry about how much a gallon of gas costs, or food to feed a family on a soldier's salary. There's tons of problems here in the US, how about she gets her husband to send our troops back home and stop fighting every other foreigner's battles.

Wow! The hypocrisy in this article makes me gag! I have been crippled for life as a result of being exposed to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam. I wrote Barak Obama TWICE! I wrote Michelle Obama TWICE! I wrote Eric Shinseki TWICE! Just looking for a little help. You know how many answers I received from these three "concerned" people? ZERO! Articles like this are printed to make people think that the government and the VA care but it's a sham. When it comes to actually DOING something it turns out to all be talk, no action. What nauseating hypocrisy!

Great idea and all political parties need to do the same thing. "But" IMY i see this as bringing the presidants approval rateing up with service members...This is just another political game. Look at the appointment of General Mcchrystal after calling them out in RS..Yup just another game playing with vetaerans and service members to get votes...

I'm excited about this. I am lucky to work for one of those companies who transfer jobs to military spouses, but it's still not a high paying job. We do not get enough encouragement from employers to have a career due to the moving and lack of stability. I hope I get to meet Mrs. Obama on her stop to Colorado, if she stops at Fort Carson. There are some great programs out there, but we need more awareness. Sadly, I have many hurdles to attack while he is deployed. I am not asking for handouts, just a little understanding.

I applaud the efforts stated here. Truly I do. But for me the question begins, why isn't the welfare of the military personnel and their family not taken care of? Why is it that the First Lady and others have to put out a special call asking the public at large for assistance? Shouldn't the government have laws, programs and such on the books taking care of these basic needs as opposed to asking the general public to be "civic" which in my estimation is to take from the little you have to give to the little they have? I have no problem with the idea or action of helping or calling for help if there was some need that wasn't foreseen, but this is rediculous. I believe it's argueably a hidden and/or double tax. Take care of those in the military the proper way. I used to hear people say "thank u" to military personnel and thought to myself, why is it that they thank people for their service. Is it because they have to do it for next to nothing and the promises we made to them as a nation aren't worth spit? They should never want for the basics in life. If we can't even do that by law, we shouldn't have a military.

I think this is a great idea, but I can't help but wonder how the reactionary, "We hate everything Obama" conservatives are going to attack her for this initiative too.

Dave F- Yes it's a great idea for every political party to be invovled and support all Veterans presently. My issue becuase I am a Veteran and My 3 bothers and father was..Is that the Presidants apporval rateing is in the dumps with the military and has been,,Look at the Appointment of General Mcchrystal after calling out the Whitehouse in RS. Now all the sudden he's appointed to this posotion. No This is an approval rateing thing..This is just a game to all politicians to win vites period..

My sister and her husband are both active duty Air Force and both deployed until November of this year. My aunt who has never had or raised kids of her stepped up and is now caring for my 6 year old niece and 1 year newphew while they are deployed. It amazes me that when I tell people about this they are shocked that my aunt would give up her life for how ever many months my sister and her husband will be gone for, but for my family this isnt considered a burden, but what families to for each other.

Respectfully requested that you bring an end to the egregious history of the West Los Angeles VA of leasing Veterans’ sacred land for non-Veteran use, which has led to more than 20,000 Veterans being homeless in Los Angeles County, even though this is their rightful "Home."

I'm struggling on a daily basis to hold on to my home and my truck and to feed my family! Virtually all of my taxdollars go to US Military endeavors and various resulting factors! If none of that is getting to the needs of the soldiers and their families, then there is nothing I can do beyond that other than to suggest the most blatantly obvious thing in the world! Get them out and bring them home where they can struggle here along with the rest of us!

Helping military families is great...but who is going to help the seniors who are on Social Security? They haven't gotten a raise in 2 years and now, the President is talking about cutting back on Medicare??!!
10:05 AM on 04/13/2011
What does this have to do with the story? The story is about being civic minded and helping military families. There's no money involved. If you have a gripe about Social Security, find an appropriate article and vent about it there.
11:29 AM on 04/13/2011
I will vent about whatever I want, wherever I want. The point is, military families are not the only ones who need help.

Veterans and their families should get the support they require primarily from the US Government not charitible donations. They have a "right" to expect that they will be well looked after on in continious and predictible way. Charities are nice for the extras but they are not something that can be counted on over time for essentials. I would hope that the appeal to the civic-mindedness of the population is not "code" for the government ducking out of their financial responsibilities in a time of budget cutting.

Exactly-when I hear Robert Gates talk about cutting the pay of the military, it makes me ill. He puts our troops in harm's way and then he wants to nickel and dime them-very sad commentary.
