'American Idiot' Movie: Green Day Broadway Show To Become A Film

American Idiot

From Grammys to Tonys to perhaps even Oscars?

"American Idiot," the hit Broadway play based on the Grammy-winning Green Day concept album, is in talks to sell its screen rights to Universal. The Hollywood Reporter says that the film will be produced Tom Hanks via his Playtone label, and Oscar-winning "Milk" screenwriter Dustin Lance Black is in talks to write the screenplay.

Originally a mid-90's California punk band, Green Day matured and took a political turn with "American Idiot," a sort of disaffected, anti-Bush rock opera. It made the band unlikely Grammy winners, sold five million albums, and inspired the Broadway show about the record's main character, Jesus of Suburbia.

Billie Joe Armstrong, the band's frontman, wrote the book for the Broadway show, which won two Tonys for production and was nominated for Best Musical, and is currently starring in the show (for the second time) as it closes out its run.

Is this broadway play about Rush Limbaugh or George W. Bush?

As a life-long Green Day fan, seeing them in concert was actually the only thing I explicitly put on my "bucket list". When I finally did get to attend a concert a couple years ago, it exceeded my expectations (which were high to begin with). Best concert I've ever been seen!

I wish I could have attend the Broadway show. I'll definitely be seeing this movie the day it comes out!

I have to say, even though I'm in my forties, Green Day is my favorite band. They have the art of writing for disenfranchised youth down perfectly. I took my sons to see their 21st Century Breakdown concert (it was my boys' first concert and they loved it). I've seen them in concert a few times and they are absolutely fantastic live.

The 3 band members are each 39 years old. It's OK for you to like them. You are not too old. I am in my forties too. I have loved them since the early 90's when I was in my twenties. I will be a lifelong fan. Never too old.

Big Green Day fan. Amazing live band and can't wait to see the touring version of the musical next year when it comes to town. Would definitely check out the movie as well. It's such an interesting concept, in terms of "Most Unlikely Band to Write a Broadway Show".

I've never seen the play but the album was awesome. One of the few really great albums to come out fairly recently.
