GOP Leaders: Don't Raise Taxes To Reduce Deficit

Boehner

WASHINGTON -- Less than two hours before a planned speech by the president, top Republicans said they will not support any debt-reduction plan that includes a tax increase.

The line reignites a recent debate over how the government should issue taxes. Republicans won a major victory on the issue in December, when President Barack Obama supported an extension of Bush-era tax cuts to the wealthy. But Obama has said he will push for those tax cuts to expire in 2012, and may take measures in the meantime to bring in more revenue through taxes.

Obama is expected to call for a repeal of the Bush tax cuts during his speech on Wednesday afternoon, when he lays out a long-term plan to reduce the deficit.

After meeting with Obama and leading Democrats at the White House on Wednesday morning, GOP leaders said that measure will be a non-starter, given the Republican control of the House and Senate Republicans' heavy opposition to tax increases.

"We don't believe lack of revenue is part of the problem, so we will not be discussing rate of taxes," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said during a press conference at the Capitol.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said Obama's plan, which he previewed for congressional leaders during the meeting, did not include many specifics. He said the only major plan by the president to shrink the deficit was to raise taxes.

"I find that very unacceptable given we're several days out from Tax Day in this country," he said. "We don't believe that raising taxes is the answer here."

Cutting taxes produces less growth than a number of other policies, such as a temporary tax holiday or infrastructure investment, that would cost the government the same amount, according to a study from the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service last year.

Despite these findings, the House Republican leadership is throwing its weight behind a plan unveiled by House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) last week. The plan cuts taxes and a number of government programs while also virtually eliminating Medicare, a popular program that provides medical insurance to the elderly and poor, and replacing it with a voucher-like system.

Because of its heavy reliance on tax cuts, the Ryan plan would have a smaller-than-reported affect on the deficit, cutting it by about $155 billion over the next decade, according to a Congressional Budget Office analysis.

"I think Paul Ryan has set the bar," said House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), who added that he he fully supports the Ryan budget.

Republicans plan to demand major debt-reduction concessions as part of a vote to raise the debt ceiling, which must be done before early July to prevent the federal government from defaulting on its loans. GOP leaders have said they understand the urgency of increasing the limit, which authorizes the Treasury to take on more loans to pay its existing debts, but that they want to couple the vote with other measures.

Although the White House indicated on Monday that the administration would prefer a "clean" bill to raise the debt ceiling, Boehner said Obama told him during Wednesday's meeting that he would allow for a bill with other deficit-reduction measures included.

John Boehner don't want to pay higher taxes. Lets face it , if Obama raises taxes everyone in washington will have to pay. It's OK for the people to do their part, but Heaven help us the Republicans won't do theirs.

John Boehner just doesn't have the smarts to see that you must raise taxes to bring down the deficit, or he is just going to play this stupid game because he is up to his neck, with obligations to corporations and big business. We will soon find out which is it.

I guess Boehner & Ryan have forgotten how Herbert Hoover's, Ronald Reagan's & George Bush's cutting taxes way down for the wealthy cut down too on jobs. Hard to believe that Reagan & Bush looked the other way while giving tax cuts to companies who were taking their jobs away from the USA.

Tell me, how much and which tax rates must be raised to balance the Obama budget proposal for FY2012? Since you think it easy, you must know this.

Every sane, independent, rational economist and person knows that taxes must be raised in order to reduce the deficit. There is simply no other way. Profering anything else is just bloviating nonsense. But then, that's pretty much what the GOP stands for.

What Boehner is really saying is "Don't raise taxes on ME to reduce the deficit....go pick on the old farts and the indigent.

The GOP plan to send millions into deep poverty without hope, education, or health-care would create a caste system in the USA, not seen since the days of slavery. For supporters and media pundits to applaud Ryan and call him courageous for this proposal is unfathomable. What modern civilization cheers the eating of their young?

"What modern civilization cheers the eating of their young? "

The same one that murders 50 million of its children, mostly as a convenience to their mothers.

These same geniuses that have been aborting the unborn have also spent $8+ Trillion on Great Society social programs since 1965 without making a dent in the "poverty" rates in this country while at the same time sinking the nation into a quagmire of debt that will be the bane of generations to come.

Paul Ryan has an easy act to follow, doesn't he?

YES, raise taxes on wealthy Americans. AND close all of the loopholes that allow wealthier Americans to avoid paying taxes. AND add another tax on those wealthy Aamericans who attempt to shelter their income offshore. It is time the uber rich of America realized that it is better to give the money back in an orderly fashion than to have a mob break down your gates and take it. Things are coming to that a lot quicker than many people realize.

Let's amend The Boehner's statement. The GOP will not support any tax increases unless it is on elderly retired people living on a fixed income.

What, does Boehner have the cat food franciaise in Ohio or something?

"I think Paul Ryan has set the bar." For who?
The Republicans insist that the poor and the middle-class must make all the sacrifices. They don't understand that in order for this to work, everyone has to contribute. It doesn't matter how much they collect from the rich, the point is that we must have shared sacrifice. (Leadership 101).
BTW, when they announced that Federal Worker's salaries would be frozen. did that include Congressmen and Senators?

For 8 years Boehner could not find the words "end deficit spending" but now he wants to do just that while cutting taxes for the rich, immediately and most likely permanently.

Republicans would cut off our air supply to give bankers and CEOs a cool breeze.

Which paty controlled the Congress when Obama was using TARP money to buy equity positions in banks, insurance and auto companies?

Which party does Timothy Geithner, tax cheat and Wall Street banker, belong to?

To which Presidential Candidate did Goldman-Sachs funnel nearly $1M in contributions?

Have you been sleeping with the devil?

The reason they don't want to raise taxes is because the repuds know that it will help to reign in the deficit and by doing so O succeeds. And you all know that the repuds can't have that.

Why don't we just borrow money to pay the debt off? It worked for the Iraq/Afghanistan wars. Makes as much sense as trying to cut spending. You can cut all of it and there will still be a deficit.
