The 25-year-old pop star talks plastic surgery in a candid interview with Derek Blasberg where she opens up about her pint-sized body and having the freedom to decide how the world sees her.
"I have never had plastic surgery, and there are many pop singers who have. I think that promoting insecurity in the form of plastic surgery is infinitely more harmful than an artistic expression related to body modification," Gaga says.

Wait...... didn't Lady Gaga once have brown hair and a bit of a thicker body? Wasn't she "born that way"? If she really wanted to promote being secure in herself, she would act more like the lovely Adele- who isn't trying to be someone she's not- she's embracing who she is, and speaking through her music. Lady Gaga talks a big talk but really, she's just another dyed-blonde, starving size 2 "artist". The clothes are different, but she's the same as the rest of them.

Her comments would mean so much more if she didn't reek of desperation herself.

And putting on inches of make-up to the point that you are barely recognizable without it, is promoting what?

She sure is making a good impression on her fans...http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/14/woman-mutilates-cat-lady-gaga-outfit_n_849167.html

Are you serious? I do not think anyone should be held responsible for this woman's nuttiness. She just as easily could have been making an outfit to attend church in... totally wacko.

I definitely understand what she's saying. Plastic surgery, image editing, and all the lot are huge factors in why people feel so insecure today in american society. The desire to look perfect; flawless, has had too much of an effect on people. And it's caused far too much negativity. Something that pops into my mind: Anorexia - is something that has been on the rise for years because of the ever growing obsession with perfection.
I appreciate what Lady Gaga is saying, yet she does seem like somewhat of a hypocrite because she is definitely photoshopped in many pictures.
As far as body modifications go, I can understand her point there as well. Body modification has been prominent in societies for a long, long time. It's on the complete other side of the spectrum compared to plastic surgery, in my mind.
(i wish there were more characters per comment so I could elaborate on my thoughts. oh well!)

Good point.

Really?....How does her wild look promote any type of insecurity? Telling people that they have to look one way or they are ugly is what causes insecurity, and why all these people are getting plastic surgery. Expressing yourself and taking on a look that is far from that norm shows that she's secure in who she is and would promote security in others who are different not cause them to be insecure....

Because she's constantly altering here appearance in drastic ways? The fact that they aren't permanent alterations isn't really relevant.

In today's society it has been stressed that the only way a woman can get a man is looking like Barbie on crack.....I have a problem with people who think that way.....i am not ashamed about how I look.....i am over 200 pounds and I love it....all she is promoting is self love.....GET THE IDEA THROUGH YOUR HEADS!

It's obvious that some people will attack Lady Gaga no matter what she says because they hate what they think she represents while having no understanding whatsoever of the nature of her art/music. Even musicians don't "get" Gaga--I am a professor at a famous music college and the faculty member who shares an office with me insisted that I take down my Lady Gaga calendar because it offended her--she went to the chair of the department behind my back to complain about it! It didn't matter that Gaga has won a Grammy or that she can really play the piano and sing well, and therefore her picture is completely appropriate in a piano teaching studio. People always hate what they don't understand. There is intentional shock value in Lady Gaga, but that is not all there is to her. She is a serious artist. And she's right about plastic surgery. Getting weird things photoshopped onto her face is so obviously not the same as getting plastic surgery. And photoshopping in general is just part of the star maker machine. I am a musician and have my professional photos photoshopped and I have never had plastic surgery. So what's the big deal?

She IS a talented artist, it's the hypocrisy people are reacting to -- she has absolutely had the very thing done that she is decrying. Nothing wrong with it - majority % of pop stars and film and tv actors have had 'work' done of some kind.

She's been photochopped. How do you get your fingers to touch with your hands on your waist?

I can do that.

I can do that as well. It depends on waist size, hand size, and where you hook your hand around your waist.

a temporary photo-shop augmentation might be considered artistic enhancement, since it is temporary and done simple for aesthetics. Gaga's fashion has everything to do with releasing your inner style and pushing artistic boundaries, an empowering message IMO.

Whether something is temporary doesn't mean it is the sole form of artistic enhancement.

Wearing raw meat is performance art and very imaginative.

Oh dear. It's not really... imaginative. Or art.

Okay let's see Gaga with hor.rible scarring, a huge nose, big ears and size A breast.s and then see what this person says about surgery. Walk a mile in someone else's shoes before you speak.

Uh - she's talking about perfectly normal people getting things fixed for vanity sake (i.e Heidi Montag, etc) - not for people with horrible scarring.

I don't think she means for the permanently deformed or for reconstructive purposes...come on, you know there is a difference.

I'm sure burn victims feel plenty insecure without plastic surgery.

They do because insensitive “normal†people stare at them and make them feel like freaks. Lady Gaga is not doing anything other than applying makeup and prosthetics to alter her outward appearance. Whereas people who have issues with themselves internally alter themselves surgically to change what they believe other people see as flaws. She’s expressing herself and encouraging others to be proud to be whoever they choose to be.

and I am sure that Gaga was not talking about this kind of reconstructive surgery.
