1,300 New Species Discovered: Conservation International Celebrates 20 Years Of Rapid Assessment Program (PHOTOS)

Conservation International (CI) is celebrating two decades of its successful Rapid Assessment Program (RAP), which has led to the discovery of over 1,300 new species, by releasing a list of its 20 "RAP Stars" -- the new species that have become international sensations with nicknames like "Yoda bat," "Dinospider," "Walking shark," and "Pinocchio frog."

A new book, "Still Counting," details the program's progress over the past two decades.

From CI:

Launched in 1990, the idea behind the creation of CI’s Rapid Assessment Program was to build a team of the best field biologists from different disciplines, and create what CI founder, CEO, and Chairman Peter Seligmann described in the foreword to the book as “An ecological SWAT team that could accurately assess the health of an ecosystem in a fraction of the time it would normally take”.

The organization's program has grown to include 10-30 scientists per expedition, and over 80 surveys have been completed in 27 countries.

Check out some of CI's RAP stars below, and click here to see them all.

The huge diversity of our rainforests still has a lot of surprises for us. Not to mention all the undiscovered species living in the sea. All the animals and plants we know right now are only the tip of the iceberg.

That place where they discovered all the new species is Foja Mountains in Papua New Guinea. I remember that National Geographic covered this story.

The bat looks like a privileged teabagger who refuses to pay his fair share of taxes.

The chinchilla rat is cute - I could see people buying those at pet stores.

The "dragonfly" is not - it's a damselfly, since it sits with its wings folded along its abdomen. Dragonflies keep their wings spread out when they perch.

why does that bat look so smug? just what is he up to?

It's scheming up ways to take away benefits from the poor while letting the rich go tax-free.

It amazes me that just by sending a few people to walk through these areas, entire new life forms can be found. I wonder how many species are out there that we don't know even exist.

Fewer than there should be.

I had never seen or heard the Shatner version of that, and I have to say that the Lithgow "gremlin " looks much more like the bat. And, also, wow, that gremlin in the Shatner version is weak!!!!!!! Hiilarious, though............. :)
