Songkran Festival: Thai Revelers Stage Massive Water Fight In Honor Of New Year (PHOTOS)

Thais Start New Year With A Splash

Armed with buckets and water pistols, locals and tourists alike took to the streets of Bangkok on Wednesday to mark the start of the Buddhist New Year.

Also known as Songkran, the three-day water festival is also celebrated throughout Cambodia and Myanmar as the traditional New Year's Day, and will continue through Friday.

According to tradition, revelers applied talcum powder paste to their faces before getting splashed, symbolizing the sins and bad luck of the previous year being "washed away" in time for the new.
