RALEIGH, N.C. -- The label "discredited Duke lacrosse accuser" has been attached to Crystal Mangum for nearly four years since North Carolina's top prosecutor determined she'd falsely accused three players of raping her at a party. When the accusations unraveled, it marked the beginning of a slide into erratic and violent behavior. Now, a boyfriend she's accused of stabbing has died – which could land her in the most serious trouble yet.

Mangum has been jailed on an assault charge since the April 3 argument that ended with the stabbing of Reginald Daye, but police say the man's death on Wednesday could bring more serious charges. It's the latest in a series of problems with the law that included her conviction last year on misdemeanor charges after setting a fire that nearly torched her home with her three children inside.

The Duke lacrosse case still touches raw nerves in Durham. Unable to find steady work because of her notoriety, Mangum has been involved in a string of unhappy relationships that she hoped would provide stability for her children, friends say.

"It's Crystal Mangum. THE Crystal Mangum," Daye's nephew said in a 911 call after the stabbing at the apartment the couple shared. "I told him she was trouble from the damn beginning."

A spotlight has been on Mangum, 32, since she said she was raped at a 2006 party where she was working as a stripper. A year later, the state attorney general concluded there was no credible evidence of an attack and that the three accused men were innocent.

The district attorney who championed Mangum's claims was disbarred and spent a night in jail. The state considered charges against Mangum but declined to pursue them, partly citing her mental state.

"I've talked to her time and time again about trying to move on from the Duke thing and trying to get her life in order, and every time she takes steps toward that, a boyfriend thing comes up," said Vincent Clark, who befriended her at the time of the rape accusations and went on to co-author her self-published memoir, "The Last Dance for Grace."

Last year, she was arrested and charged with setting a blaze at her home during an argument with a different boyfriend. During a videotaped police interrogation hours after her arrest, she said she set fire to the boyfriend's clothes, smashed the windshield of his car, and threatened to stab him during their confrontation. In December, a jury deadlocked on the arson charge, convicting her of related misdemeanors. If she had been convicted of arson, she could have been sentenced to up to seven years in prison.

"She's desperately looking for a man to help her out with her kids," said Clark, who describes Mangum as quiet, funny and a voracious consumer of the news. "She gets laid off from a job, she takes up with a guy, the guy's kind of questionable, but it provides a way to help support her kids."

Friends say she considered leaving Durham for a place where her name isn't as well known, but was daunted by the prospects of uprooting her family.

"It's easy for outsiders to say she should leave Durham, but how do you do that with three children? Moving costs money," said Jackie Wagstaff, a former Durham City Council and school board member who was an outspoken supportive presence at Mangum's trial last year.

"She's not the monster she's been painted to be," said Wagstaff, who spent last Christmas with Mangum and her children.

But having a group of supporters has insulated Mangum from the full consequences of her actions, argued KC Johnson, a Brooklyn College history professor who co-wrote the book "Until Proven Innocent" about the Duke lacrosse case and blogged about Mangum's trial last year.

"It's incredibly sad, because she was given an opportunity to move beyond this," he said. "What makes this particularly tragic is that if the previous trial had ended differently, none of this would have occurred."

Durham police are still investigating Daye's death, and anticipate filing new charges, spokeswoman Kammie Michael said Thursday. Mangum's lawyer, Harold "Woody" Vann, said she'll plead not guilty to the current assault charge, but declined to comment further on the case.

"I have met with her since being appointed, but I haven't had a chance to talk to her about (Daye's death)," he said. "I will do that if and when they upgrade the charges."

Phone messages left with Daye's relatives were not immediately returned Thursday.

Wagstaff and Clark say they continue to support Mangum, and want to know more about the circumstances of Daye's death. The hospital where the 46-year-old died declined to say what caused his death.

"Don't be so quick to judge," Wagstaff said. "Let the criminal justice system work, if it can."

What's sad is that not only does she have kids, but she also has supporters. How can anyone support this maniac?

The headline of this article is misleading!

Reginald Daye, Boyfriend Of Duke Lacrosse Accuser Crystal Mangum, Dies From Stab Wounds She Inflicted

Mr. Daye died after he was stabbed. That doesn't mean the wounds killed him. They may very well have killed him but that is something for the courts to decide. It is just this sort of reporting that gives journalists a bad name. Is it really that hard to wait until you know the facts before writing something? I live in Durham, NC and there is a lot of information going around that Mr. Daye was up and walking around a couple of days before he went into a coma and died. There is some indication that he was about to be released from the hospital. Now he's dead. Can we please wait until all the facts are known and let the courts do their job?

Those who side with CG Mangum don't care that she raped the Duke men with her lie. Sometimes the real rape/sex abuse victims are those accused of rape & not the accusers & that's what happened in the Duke case. CG Mangum's is also a child abuser & if she is convicted in this case a murderess. Rape & sex abuse cases must be judged based on facts of each case. Not always yes or no cases. Sometimes it's possible for both men & women to consent & then revoke consent in act & say no. It's also possible for both women & men to initially say 'no' but then voluntarily change mind & decide to have sex. It's also possible to say no to 1 act but agree to another. These are jury topics.

Also a rapist motive is sexual. Any1 who says that rape is not about sex is talking rubbish. Many men rape women because they're desperate for sex, can't find a wilful woman not even a prostitute & they force a woman to have sex. Acquaintance rapists commit their rapes for sexual pleasures. Most women who are raped are between the ages of 18-35. Rapists do commit their crime for sexual pleasure. Most psychologists today do say that they do it for sex in addition to other reasons. To say it's not about sex either doesn't know what they're talking about or they're lying esp. if they are a psychologist.

The Duke lacrosse case is over. This woman apparently made it 32 years with an undiagnosed mental problem. Or maybe it was diagnosed and she just never got help. What a shame. And very scary.

It is not over for the people whose lives were ruined and have to remember the nightmare every day.

The liberal media jumped on that story and sensationalized it before knowing the facts.

I mean why shouldn't they. The guys were privileged by the merit of being Duke students and playing sports. That alone means that they should be punished. If not for something that they actually did, we should simply punish them for something they may do in the future.

You know, preventive measures.
10:48 AM on 04/19/2011
CG Mangum is a rapist but the Duke men she raped with her lie haven't had their lives ruined. This isn't to get sympathy for CG Mangum because she is also a child abuser & perhaps a murderess-she must go to prison for life if she is convicted & yes, she should've done prison time-certainly after she abused her kids. But let's not say that she ruined the Duke men's lives, because she didn't.

Crystal is finally going to be sent up the river where she belongs. She leveled false rape allegations not once, but twice (Creedmoor, NC years earlier). She's been to jail so many times she is on a first name basis with the guards. Now, predictably, she has killed somebody. The pot-bangers can hold a candlelight vigil when she's sentenced.

Duke Biology Professor Says She STILL Doesn't Know If Accused Were Guilty of Rape!!!

http://ace.mu.nu/archives/222419.php

But for some at Duke, the possibility of dropped charges left as many questions as answers -- and a feeling that the full truth of what happened that night in the house on North Buchanan Boulevard may never be known, in part because the investigation was mishandled.

"Since we haven't gone through a normal legal process, we don't know what really happened," said Duke biology professor Sheryl Broverman. "The fact the charges were dropped doesn't mean nothing happened. It just means information wasn't collected appropriately enough to go forward."

Broverman said she couldn't say one way or the other whether the players sexually assaulted the exotic dancer -- and that the investigation did little to clarify that. "For me, it just means we'll never know," she said.

The bathroom wasn't big enough for four people to stand still in together at the same time so no gang rape could have happened in the bathroom. Why is that so hard to understand.Kim Roberts and Crystal Mangum were together the whole time so it was impossible for one of them to be raped and the other one not notice.Besides none of these young men found her attractive so they would not have been physically able to have sex with her,the machinery just doesn't work that way.All of them including Devon Sherwood said they thought Mangum was repulsive.

Which bathroom wasn't big enough? And no, Kim Roberts stated they were separated for 5-10 minutes. Apparently your brain cells aren't working tonight. Whether someone is attractive or not has nothing to do with being raped. That was an ignorant statement.

Kim Roberts statement to Linwood Wilson:

"I need to tell you guys that I have thought about the time frame that night," Roberts said, according to Wilson's account. "I had originally said I wasn't away from her [Mangum] for more than 5 minutes but after thinking about it and what all I did it was more like 15 minutes or maybe a little more.

"...When I got inside I went into the master bedroom where some guys were watching TV and I could hear her [Crystal] in the bathroom with some guys, you know the door was open slightly I started to go in but one of the guys stepped in front of me. I told her I was leaving you know, through the door, and I turned around and went back to my car."

NPR Juan Williams interview:

WILLIAMS: Then you go out...you decide I'm uncomfortable

ROBERTS: Right.

WILLIAMS: And leave because...

ROBERTS: I run outside and lock my car doors.

WILLIAMS: With the other dancer? Or by yourself?

ROBERTS: No. By myself, you know, I had to look out for myself and I couldn't really... no. I'm not going to talk about this too much, but I was outside we were separated for a point when I was outside.

She lied and now she killed a man and you are still questioning it. Face it that she lied as much as you would like to see peoples lives ruined because of your own hang ups. And ask yourself why when a white woman is killed by a black man like that news reporter in Arkansas it does not get as much media attention than this lie did.

Reading your last sentence is very telling & says more about you.

We don't know what happened that night. And we will never know because there wasn't a trial.

The dead man more than likely did something to her first. No one just sticks a knife into anyone. Where is your innocent until proven guilty with Crystal? Or is that only meant for rich white guys because that's all we heard from their supporters from day one of when she filed a complaint against them. After all she has been through, her behavior doesn't surprise me at all. People harassed, stalked, slandered her at every opportunity.

Nifong knew the whole time those young men were innocent and that there was no gang rape in a bathroom that was too small. He just brought charges against them in order to win an election. This was clearly proven at his disbarment trial.

Well...well...well.... Who didn't see this one comin down the pipe?

It's time for the media, both liberal and conservative, to turn a deaf ear to both Al and Jesse. No more interviews. Do not attend their press conferences. Do not cover stories in which they advocate for particular groups, causes, or individuals. They are irrelevant. Their very presence indicates lack of credibility.

Crystal was abused by the justice system in NC. Money talks but big money talks LOUDER!
04:09 AM on 04/15/2011
How about Crystal abused the justice system in NC allowing her to continue the destructive ways which eventually led to the murder of Mr. Daye.

Maybe now Crystal will get punished for her crime and won't be able to continue hurting others for awhile.

When I was in grad school, a "fraternity" had a party and hired some strippers.

They showed up-if you hit them with a snow plow, it would improve their sexiness and looks-with a pimp.

The guys told them to go away, and the pimp wanted $1,000.

When the guys said no, the pimp pulled out a gun and tried to rob everyone at the party.

When the police came, the pimp was underneath his car crying for mercy. One of our guys was an NCAA Judo champion, one was an All-Amercian football player in college, ect.

The school got smart and disbanded the frat.
