South Carolina Jail Bans All Books But Bible

The US Justice Department is asking a federal judge in South Carolina to allow it to intervene in a lawsuit against a sheriff who allegedly forbids prisoners in his jail from receiving books, magazines, or printed materials other than copies of the King James version of the Bible.

Berkeley County Sheriff H. Wayne DeWitt denies that restrictions imposed at the county lockup in Moncks Corner, S.C., rise to the level of a constitutional violation or violate US law.

The only "good" thing I could ever imagine about jail is reading endlessly to pass the time. If all I was offered was a Bible, I'd call up the Freedom From Religion Foundation and American's United for Separation of Church and State and get their badazz lawyers on the case of these proselytizing y0kels.

As an athiest i am so glad i do not live in the US, the one group all the religious unthinkers agree they hate is us. The King James Bible has to be one of the worst works of fiction ever printed.
