Titanic Sinking's 99th Anniversary Honored

First Posted: 04/15/2011 3:08 pm Updated: 06/15/2011 5:12 am

With its dramatic twists and massive loss of life, the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic remains one of maritime history's most compelling tragedies.

Exactly 99 years ago, the "unsinkable" luxury liner was pulled into the Atlantic Ocean after it struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York. Of the 2,223 people on board, only 706 survived.

In Belfast, where the ship was constructed, city officials were expected to lay wreaths at the Titanic Memorial near City Hall and observe a moment of silence, the BBC is reporting. Meanwhile, commemorative services and special events were also scheduled in Southampton, England, from which Titanic set sail on April 10, 1912.

And though the tragedy has already been the subject of films, plays and even a Broadway musical, a British theater company is going even further by allowing audience members to re-enact the ship's final hours, the BBC is reporting.

Meanwhile, in Halifax, Nova Scotia -- where many Titanic victims are buried -- plans are reportedly underway for a 2012 memorial festival to mark the tragedy's centennial, though some enthusiasts have complained that the city has done little to take advantage of its connection to the ill-fated ship.

Just before WW2 George V1 and the Queen were on a goodwill trip to the US and Canada when they got caught in exactly the same place as the Titianic and lay still for 2-3 days. No explaination was given then for the length of time it took to cross, but was it revealed in the official bio of the Queen Mother published last year.

One of the more intriguing stories is that of Violet Jessop who survived the sinking of Titanic and Britannic and was aboard Olympic when it collided with the HMS Hawke.

I was lucky enough to see the Titantic exhibition that came to my city. The pieces that had been savaged were really interesting. The ticket you purchase to see this is in the name of a real passenger, at the end of tour you find out if you survived, I did, my passenger was a third class passenger.

Maybe this year they will find some survivors. I hope so.

"some enthusiasts have complained that the city has done little to take advantage of its connection to the ill-fated ship."

I suppose that Halifax is not as enthusiastic about shipwrecks as most Titanic enthusiasts for a good reason.

Having a ship explode, and taking out half the place, will do that to a city.

The US government had public hearings into the sinking, at which one senator asked, "Why didn't the passengers take shelter in the ship's waterproof compartments?"

Well 99 years has been long enough to make light of this tragedy I guess. I saw a kids blow up slide in the shape of a half-sunk Titanic that kids slide off of into what's supposed to be the ocean. Isn't that a nice, fun game for kids? I was shocked and horrified.

I think it's right for Halifax to be less than enthusiastic about the Titanic shipwreck.

They used to call that kind of thing respect.
