Apple Sues Samsung For Copying iPhone, iPad

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 04/18/11 08:43 PM ET   Updated: 06/18/11 06:12 AM ET

Apple's pulling out the big guns against Samsung.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has filed suit against Samsung for patent and trademark infringement.

Apple alleges that Samsung has purposely modeled several of its Android products after Apple's hit iPad and iPhone devices.

Among the offenders are Samsung's Galaxy line of tablets and smartphones. Apple claims that the design, hardware, and interface features of Samsung's gadgets too closely resemble those of iDevices.

"It's no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging," an Apple rep told All Things D. "This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple's intellectual property when companies steal our ideas."

Take a look through our slideshow (below) and tell us if you think the Samsung copied Apple. Share your thoughts in the comments.

I made a big chart/graphic, comparing the iPhone with the Galaxy S and the F700, to show just how much Samsung's design has changed in a way that approaches that of the iPhone. Also compared are the iPad/Tab, and all of their packaging, as in the lawsuit.

Ironic that a company that makes its living extorting money from intellectual property owners is complaining about copyright issues.

I'm pretty eager to see how Apple plans on suing Samsung over "copying" any hardware/software that Samsung makes and sells to Apple for their iPhones. What did Samsung copy other than Apple's innovative rectangle shape? The ability to switch out batteries and Micro SD cards? oh wait!

There are many things to look at regarding copyright infringements. A lot of people don't realize that. Put yourself in Apple's shoes for a little while and I think you may see where they are coming from. It is one thing to make a deal with the oringinal "inventor" of a product, and it is a completely different thing to just basically rewrite their product. For the most part, Apple put a lot of time and sweat into making these products, and I'm sure that Samsung didn't do the same, even if they aren't "exactly" the same, you try to tell me, that they didn't get their ideas from Apple and disect the products to see how they tick, then just made something that "wasn't the same" Even though it may not be the exact same, it is still against the law, unless their was a bargain made, and they contacted Apple before putting these items out on the shelf.

So car manufactuers should sue one another because they have similar looking and functioning products? That is the logic of your argument... and naive.

Apple is just pissed because people have found a way to make better devices so they look for anything they can to bring them down. I have had an iphone and got rid of it quickly. I love my Samsung Galaxy. They (Apple) just need to stop being so arrogant. Grow up someone has made something better than your device and if you research it, the market is better more apps and games etc. Android os all the way baby!

What does Apple expect Samsung to do? People want smartphones that are light, small and compact, yet have a large screen. That pretty much predefines the design in general. Or are competitors to iStuff now expected to use black and white screens with command line input?

They are not the same size. Apple has become so arrogant!!

Ummmm, I'm not seeing a resemblance.

All of the gadgets out there look similar to each other. Would I ever mistake a Tab from an I-Pad or I-Pod. Certainly not. Similar is not exact. If it was a knock off they were trying to sell as the same thing I could see going forward with a lawsuit. This just looks like sour grapes to me.

" In response, Samsung’s best bet is to argue that its products and packaging aren’t confusingly similar, and if that doesn’t work, to somehow prove that consumers aren’t actually being confused"

is it just me or shouldn't it be Apple's job to prove that people are getting confused??? I have yet to find 1 person that confuses the two.

This is a farce, so the iPad essentially copied the GUI standard that people have been using for the past 20 years and more and Apple is suing Samsung because it done the same? What does Apple expect people to use, a command line instead of icons?
