In this spot-on parody, “I Know What You Spilled Last Summer” features four young oil executives, including a Jennifer Love Hewitt lookalike(ish) trying to cover up a terrible disaster.
The BP oil spill impressively (or disturbingly) parallels the slasher film, "I Know What You Did Last Summer." While the parody is entertaining, it also carries a significant message. At one point, an executive toasts, “What do companies do when they get caught destroying the environment? They lie about it!”
The film was made as part of the launch for Counterspill (www.counterspill.org), an online platform created to highlight the impact of non-renewable energy disasters. The site, supported by Wallace Global Fund, combines reporting, research, social media, viral content and community engagement.
“Counterspill was created so we can actually make changes in the wake of disaster," says co-founder and filmmaker Chris Paine (Director, “Who Killed the Electric Car” and “Revenge of the Electric Car”). "We want to constructively counter industry and governmental spin on these disasters so we don't keep returning to business as usual. These should be opportunities to accelerate our renewable energy future."
