The Greenest Colleges 2011: Princeton Review List

First Posted: 04/22/2011 8:45 am   Updated: 06/22/2011 5:12 am

Is your school ready for Earth Day?

This year, the Princeton Review partnered with the U.S. Green Building Council to evaluate 703 postsecondary institutions in the U.S. and Canada, and found less than half worthy of inclusion in their "Guide To 311 Green Colleges" (PDF).

The Princeton Review and USGBC evaluated the schools according to their responses to ten questions about their green academic programs, environmentally friendly practices and commitment to sustainability. Of the schools that ranked, 18 earned top marks and a spot on the Princeton Review's "honor roll," and ten were highlighted for their innovative approach to campus sustainability.

The guide profiles each of the 311 schools, providing general institutional statistics and responses to the survey questions, as well as green highlights and facts about the school.

Check out the report (PDF) for the full list of schools plus more on methodology.

Below, see 15 of the schools added to the list of sustainable schools for the first time this year.

Our colleges house some of the most beautiful buildings and landscapes of the country, don't they?

Just thought people should know:

Pitzer is not included in the Princeton Review's list of Colleges and Universities with LEED certified buildings, but I lived in LEED certified freshmen dorms my first year that have been built since 2009.

The title is misleading. These schools are not the greenest-- but rather -- schools that have been added to the green list for the first time.

I did not preview the list, but, CA universities are impressive and ardent in inculcating green technology courses into their respective curricula. I constantly get updates and invitations about the advances made in our universities.

Overall, as an immigrant to the US, and having visited a few universities in various countries, I can honestly say that no other nation's universities comes close in technology, splendor, decor, curricula, scholarships, government loans and grants. Even our average universities are impressive. I have little doubt that Green Technology will soon be what hi-tech was in the 90s.

Willamette University, small liberal arts school in Oregon.
Our on campus eateries have contracts with local farmers, never use hormone treated meat or milk, have compostable to-go boxes, compost all their waste. Every building has its own recycling area, every room has its own bin. Is on track to be "climate neutral" by 2030, uses extensive solar power and passive lighting in the new buildings. Bike culture is huge here and we have a free bike shop to maintain them.
Mostly it is just a cultural thing here, people will point out ways you can do something better, and it doesn't come off as preachy.

UW-Madison never makes lists anymore. We used to be the top party school for several years running until we were taken off that list, too. The reasoning was that is was unfair to put amateurs up against the pros.

Nice to see my alma mater on the list. (Virginia Commonwealth University). It is in a downtown location, so I'm glad to see they are working to be 'green'.

just to help out a little guy : mum.edu
on a per capita basis no doubt the greenest; it just needs some serious endowments
sustainableliving@mum.edu • construction is
underway on campus to erect a facility described by Associated Press as
“the ultimate green building” The building will house Maharishi’s
Sustainable Living program, will generate its own electricity, heating, cooling, water, and manage its own waste disposal needs. It’s a perfect complement to the university’s four-year bachelor of science in Sustainable Living.
A new track in Sustainable Agriculture is offering students the opportunity
to run all aspects of the university’s campus-based organic farm, including:
growing crops, harvesting, composting, and sales. Last year MUM received
a grant to research cold season greenhouse production using low tunnels.
This year-round production supplies the majority of produce to the 97 percent vegetarian organic campus cafeteria. 100%
food scraps from the dining hall are composted
[50 tons of soil in 21/2 years]. A new system of
single stream recycling stations and dumpsters in dorms and on campus
further increases the amount of the school’s waste diverted from landfills.
The student farm also serves as the impetus for research projects in biodiesel fuels. Additionally, MUM filed an ambitious climate action plan to
reduce carbon emissions and target 100 percent of electricity used on campus from renewable sources by 2012. The university’s three year Prairie
Restoration Project is repurposing 14 acres of demolition sites on campus
and restoring them to native prairie.
