'Green Lantern' Trailer: Extended Look At Ryan Reynolds, Space Scenes (VIDEO)

First Posted: 04/23/11 10:45 AM ET Updated: 06/23/11 06:12 AM ET

Ryan Reynolds may be the sexiest man on earth, but the rest of the universe doesn't much care about that. He's got to do a whole lot more to impress them.

A new, extended trailer for Reynolds' upcoming superhero epic "The Green Lantern" has made its way to TV and the internet, explaining the backstory of the inspiration comics and showing more footage of Reynolds in his skintight CGI suit.

Fans are also treated to more views of space and the massively expensive computer scenes that filmmakers hope will wow the audiences. We see more of the Green Lantern Corps, along with Hal Jordan's allies Tomar-Re and Kilowog.

If that all sounds confusing, just watch the trailer below. "The Green Lantern" hits theaters June 17th; Reynolds' more earth-bound comedy, "The Change-Up," is due for an August 5th release.

Sorry, but I still can't accept Ryan Reynolds as a hunky leading man, he has a face made for comic relief, and this is all a mistake.

All I need is one night Ryan. I don't need a lifetime commitment, just one night. Hey, I'll settle for a few hours and I'll be good.

Am I the only person who's excited for this movie? I always wanted Ryan Reynolds to play the Flash but he seems pretty adept at taking on Green Lantern. What separates this movie from Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk and Captain America is that those films are being prepped for a large scale collaboration in the form of The Avengers....but considering how comic book movies with tons of superheroes tend to flop (Spiderman 3, Xmen 3...you get my drift) I might not get too excited for all the spoilers at the end. It would be interesting to see WB actually create a universe that would make seem plausible that all the superheroes under the DC label can live in, but for now let's just see them stand on their own before having to share screen time.

Well, when Thor and Captain America go on to record box office while Green Lantern only does so-so, hopefully it'll lead to some serious cleaning house over at WB.

And hopefully it'll solidify Nolan's position there to where he can cut out these decision makers who clearly don't "get' their own stable of franchise DC characters and seem hopelessly mired in the 1990's.

I thought Ryan had too much of a baby-face (not necessarily a bad thing) to play Hal Jordon, but I am willing to trust the producers and director with their choices. Sometimes people can surprise you.

Can you by chance name them all?

Please don't jump all over me, guys, but I don't this is going to be as accessible to non-comic book fans as previous super hero movies. It just seems too off the wall and unrealistic. I think a lot of audiences are going to reject it out of hand.

I hope I'm wrong.

You haven't seen the wondercon footage. Totally blows away any of the earlier trailers. It's far more epic then most movies.

You misunderstand. I'm talking about the casual film goer, the ones that made movies like Iron Man and the Dark Knight enormous successes. They don't attend cons and I think they are usually more drawn to action movies that have a certain basis in reality. It doesn't matter how "epic" it seems.

I think I agree with you, even though I've been a comic book fan all my life. I know the Green Lantern character very well, but I would have to say he's not as well-developed as Batman or Iron Man. Hal Jordan is just a perfectly honorable defender of Earth -- he has no conflict. That's what makes Batman and Iron Man interesting and worth telling a story about. Even the Hulk and Spider-Man are examples of a comic book characters with inner conflict that they have to overcome.

Warner Bros tried to make an animated feature of the Green Lantern in 2009 but it fell flat because Hal Jordan's character was a cardboard cutout with no apparent motivation either to be a hero or to not be a hero.

I hope the makers of Green Lantern understand this, and develop Hal Jordan in this film with some character depth.

That's a good point. However, I think that they plan on combining Hal's origin with Kyle Rainer's personality, which is less flat and stereotypically "heroic."

I still think mass audiences are going to be reluctant to see it though. It just looks too... I dunno, cartoony?

Hal has motivation up the wazzou. They have failed to properly present it in full in the direct to dvd animated film because they had recently covered a version of hal's origin story in The New Frontier, where Hal's character was quite fleshed out and very three dimensional. If this movie incorporates his defining moment properly, he will not be the "cardboard cutout" that you claim. (I refer, of course, to the death of his father).

If done well they can also play with what made Hal turn into Parallax/one of Batman's problems with Hal, the obsessive need to fix things. Hal suffers from Sam Becket syndrome, often with rather horrific results (cf. Emerald Twilight, Zero Hour, Quiver). It would be quite interesting if they use that aspect of his personality in the movie series.

Partly though, you are hitting on what makes a green lantern a green lantern. Green Lanterns are (depending on the era) either entirely without fear or able to overcome great fear. They are fearless, their heroism comes from that fact. Hal is a hero because he lacks fear and has the greatest weapon in the universe at his command of his will. As I said above, if the origin story is well told, this will work out well.
