WASHINGTON - Some 30,000 kids and their parents swarmed the White House grounds Monday for the annual tradition of rolling Easter eggs across the South Lawn, complete with games, storytelling and a visit from the Easter Bunny.

"I hope everybody is having a great time here," President Barack Obama said in brief remarks formally kicking off Monday's event. He was joined on a balcony overlooking the sun-drenched South Lawn by wife, Michelle, daughters Malia and Sasha and mother-in-law Marian Robinson.

Michelle Obama said it was "pretty amazing" that a record 30,000 people would be attending. All 50 states and Washington, D.C., were represented, according to the White House.

5 Ugliest Easter Eggs

"We are so excited about this year's Easter egg roll," she said. "The theme is "Get Up and Go!" because, as you know, I'm a big proponent of getting up and going, making sure we're moving and eating healthy and this Easter Egg Roll reflects all of that."

Mrs. Obama has traveled around the country stressing healthy eating and exercise as part of a nationwide campaign against childhood obesity.

She urged Easter Egg Roll participants to enjoy all the available activities, including story time, obstacle courses, yoga, dancing, tennis and basketball with professional athletes and, of course, the traditional rolling of pastel-colored hard-boiled eggs across the plush lawn that essentially is her back yard.

As the rest of his family and the Easter Bunny looked on, Obama blew a whistle to start one of the traditional egg-rolling races.

"Is everybody ready? Everybody feels good about their form?" he said before signaling the start.

As the race neared an end, one girl was left rolling long after the others. Obama encouraged her, then helped her flip her egg across the finish line.

"Everybody's a winner!" he said before delivering a high-five to the boy who won and posing for pictures with them all.

Before saying good-bye, Obama and the first lady took turns reading "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom."

The Easter Egg Roll dates to 1878 and President Rutherford B. Hayes.

Tickets to the daylong affair, scheduled for 7:30 a.m. to 6:20 p.m., were distributed to five groups. Each group of 6,000 guests will be allowed to spend two hours on the South Lawn, the White House said.

Mine was one of two families selected to represent the State of Georgia at yesterday's Easter Egg Roll. This wonderful event attended by 33,000 children and their parents/grandparents and they, several hundred volunteers, event performers, program providers, secret service agents, park rangers and special guests. The attendees represented seemingly every possible color in the human rainbow and everyone - including the secret service and volunteers seemed happy to be there.

On the metro ride into the city, a little blond haired girl tapped me on my shoulder and yelled with delight, "I'm going to the Obama's house!" The look on her face said it all - she was thrilled and so were her parents.

The kids were dressed in their Easter finery, short and flip flops. ballerina tutus and even super-hero capes. They appeared to belong to a single happy family of Americans and despite the heat and the waiting in lines, everyone was in a celebratory mood and seemed happy to share the joy of the event with one another. All of the adults treated each other and the kids with the utmost respect and kindness and for a few hours, we all had a glimpse of what America could be.

The only animosity associated with yesterday's event is that which has been shared by some of the people posting here. Thank goodness you were nowhere around to infect all of the happy Americans I had an opportunity to be amongst yesterday.

Thank you dearest, best friend for giving my daughter, Grace an "once-in-a-lifetime experience. She enjoyed each and everything - from taking her first road trip with you, Godmother to eating Maryland crabs to being a guest at the The White House Easter Egg Roll. She rocked-n-rolled like a "21st Century Girl" with her favorite singer, Willow Smith. The list of Grace's likes are limitless and I know that she will be journaling, posting and blogging about this memorable Washington, DC forever.

As much as trees, reindeer and overspending have to do with Christmas. But many millions wouldn't want to change a thing about either one. Ain't freedom grand!!

Easter is a pagan holiday that celebrates the joy of spring. That's what the eggs and bunnies represent. Try a Google search if you don't believe me.

Bunnies and eggs represent, from what I understand, rebirth. Which is also what the Christians associate with the holiday, again from my understanding. I don't see why the two have to be mutually exclusive...

I am simply amazed by the class this entire family has. Both come from humble hard working backgrounds and worked hard to be where they are. It still brings tears to my eyes to see a biracial family in the white house. I am 38 and biracial and truly believed I would never see this day. The smiles are real, the intent to do better for our children and country is there. I wish some could see it. We need to stop being divided and work with this president to change our country. Stop the birther b.s. and the insults he has taken from day one. He told us that he could not do this alone, and it would take time. I love these pictures of our first family.

Fanned. When I see The President I see a man who was elected President - not a black man. He ran for office as an American. What's encouraging is that most young Americans see it that way too.

What's funny about all the people saying Obama is stealing our tax dollars is that he actually made more money as a private citizen than as the President. His books sell in the millions, yet instead of going out on book tours (or even talking about them at all) he ran for office and is trying to lead a fractured country. The problem isn't Obama, to be honest, it's not even the two-party system. It's that Americans on the whole do not feel in any way connected to one another. We are not a "United" States, and we haven't been for a long time, if ever. We're a country where entrenched white businessmen see their influence and power waning as America enjoys a booming racial diversity, and they will irrationally spend every last dime to try and retain power. Divide and conquer, weak v. strong, class warfare, they're employing all of it. And, like George Carlin said, "nobody seems to notice, and nobody seems to care". We're all too busy worrying about why our iPad won't sync or what Lindsay Lohan is doing to really get active in our own political system. The politicians - both Republican AND Democrat - wouldn't have it any other way. They're both crooked and corrupt, for the most part. There are some good Dems and good Republicans in office, but they are few and far between. Wake up America. They're robbing us blind. Stop attacking the people trying to fix the problem.

We are not united = bad. We are diverse = good. Not bipolar in any way at all?

See what I mean? This is the thinking I'm talking about. "Diversity" is not the opposite of "unity". Disunity and division are.

Unity should actually go hand in hand with diversity. It means we are together as a people, regardless of how racially diverse the country is. We stand as Americans, whether it's African-Americans, Native Americans, Caucasian Americans, Asian Americans, we start dropping the qualifiers and just call ourselves Americans, united.
