Labor Affiliate Seeks To Organize Unemployed

First Posted: 04/26/11 05:09 PM ET Updated: 06/26/11 06:12 AM ET

The community organizing affiliate of the AFL-CIO is coordinating with state labor groups to hold monthly meetings of the unemployed in five U.S. cities, in hopes of connecting the jobless with helpful resources and involving them in local politics.

Hundreds of jobless Working America members (and non-members) have attended meetings in Portland, Ore.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Denver, Colo.; Pittsburgh, Pa. and Minneapolis, Minn., officials said. The meetings, which began in February, are part of a campaign called "America Wants to Work," aimed at helping struggling workers at a time when public officials are more focused on slashing spending on social programs and taking away collective bargaining rights.

"We just want to help folks," Chelsey Evans, state director of Working America in New Mexico, told HuffPost. "We’ve had several meetings and we’re coming together to provide services and support to anyone in the community who is unemployed. We’re finding that a lot of people really struggle to navigate through this extremely complex system, whether it’s unemployment, rental assistance, utility assistance, job counseling."

Evans said that of Working America's 98,000 members in New Mexico, some 11,000 are unemployed. Working America is launching the New Mexico Wants to Work campaign in collaboration with the New Mexico Federation of Labor, the United Way of Central New Mexico, and the Central New Mexico Central Labor Council.

Susan See, laid off early in 2009 from her job doing advertising and administrative work for a local newspaper in Albuquerque, said the New Mexico Wants to Work monthly meetings have been a big help. She's doing some freelance photography while her search for full-time work grinds on, seemingly endlessly.

"It helps a lot just to have a support network, just to know that I’m not alone," said See, 41. "It starts to feel after a while, 'What am I doing wrong? Is it my age, is it because I’ve been out of work so long?' And then you start hearing that from other people, that they’re having the same issues."

Bob Tackett, executive secretary-treasurer of the Northwest Oregon Labor Council, said about 70 people showed up at the first Oregon Wants to Work meeting in February, and that turnout's diminished slightly at subsequent meetings, which Tackett said has been disappointing. At the second gathering of the jobless, Tackett said, "I got one of the managers from the unemployment office to be there and answer some of their questions. I thought boy, this is good stuff."

Working America member Teresa Berlin of Portland said she's been at every meeting. "It’s kind of like a support system as a well as a political activist thing," she said. Berlin, 37, said she lost her job as a server at a restaurant in 2007. She's been scraping by with part-time work as a cab driver, unemployment insurance, and rental income since then. "I rent out all the rooms in my house to pay the mortgage," she said. "I have five roommates."

Berlin said she's networked with other unemployed folks, some of whom seem to be struggling more than she is. "There’s a lot of people that are really depressed, that feel isolated," she said. "One woman had been putting out resumes for a year and hadn’t got one single interview. I’m really blessed compared to a lot of people."

The America Wants to Work campaign is reminiscent of Working America's effort last year to mobilize its unemployed members ahead of the midterm elections in November. Among the group's 3 million members, half a million are jobless, according to a spokeswoman.

I wish those seeking employment the best of luck. I really do. I have been unemployed for 2 months and the only thing I can find is more thankless, minimum wage, 15 hour a week jobs. My wife and I decided that it would be better if I stayed at home at raised our child rather than work just to pay for daycare. I've been trying to figure out a way to make some money at home. If you are interested in working at home while looking for a job visit http://mystayathomedad.blogspot.com/

Union move is a reelection gambit for Obama.
Why reelect Obama?
Republicans couldn't have stopped Obama from creating a "Job Czar" and "Jobs Program" in 2009/2010/2011. Why hasn't he?
B/c your vote is taken for granted. You've given no reason for him to think otherwise.

And corporate media will not give you voice if you do b/c corporate media will continue to serve the interest of corporate media. You see how much coverage they give the Tea Party, every 10 person protest is on the evening news.

These guys are trying to make America a penniless and pitiful country. CEOs have money, trying to hold onto their jobs and do lot more output with no help...as for the "rosy look" to the economy, remember it's election time, many emptying seats next time around and new faces...notice campaigner always goes to college campuses for that bright future speeches and blue collar union guys in factories pushing "let;s rebuild" new jobs are too technical for average guy and tech guys don't get their hands dirty, like Grandpa did, catch-22 everywhere...

We need jobs at living wages, we need extended unemployment. WE DON'T NEED MEETINGS.

The unions will not be "su_king up" to the un-employed very long since they have no money for dues.

The unemployed have NO political voice at this time. The employment situation is a travesty and it's exploitation is Un-American. I have heard NOTHING about jobs since November when all these know-it-alls were elected. Disgusting.

Where was Working America the past 2 years when 99ers desperately needed some support and help to get extended benefits??????????????

The article states:

‘Hundreds of jobless Working America members (and non-members) have attended meetings in Portland, Ore.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Denver, Colo.; Pittsburgh, Pa. and Minneapolis, Minn., officials said.’

I wonder why they are in those cities instead of cities with HIGH UNION rates that typically have HIGHER UNEMPLOYMENT rates.

Unionized States = Higher Unemployment!

Right-to-Work States = Jobs!

...with fewer benefits and lower wages. Welcome to "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer."

Lecole54:

Depends. If I am at home with no job, and a factory opens up next to me paying minimum wage. I am still making more than…say nothing. If I was unemployed, I certainly would not want to be in a state that limits my ability to work AT ANY PRICE I want. It is called freedom. Why are you trying to stop people from deciding what their time is worth, especially when they are not doing anything with that time.

Additionally, not all the jobs are low wage. An increasingly amount of new jobs are good paying industrial and high tech jobs. They pay fair market wages. They just do not want to be held hostage through work stoppages every time unions want more.

The auto industry has been growing in America since the early 1990’s. That isight it has been expanding nearly every year…just not in Michigan. They pay decent wages. People in those shops are better off. Ask Detroit how unions have worked out for them.

Anyway, the consumers of labor are voting with their feet an leaving union states. That only hurts the unions and states, not the company. As it should be!

right to work states have higher unemployment. your posting is a big lie as usual. take a hike

Higher unemployemt can be caused by a lot of things, housing bubbles, high tax etc. Job creation though, adjusted for exogenous effects. let me see your links that prove pro-union states are better at attracting companies and creating jobs, once controlled for other factors. Or, like usual, are you just spouting an unsupported talking point based on a static data set that lacks neither correlation nor causality.

more power to 'em. i would just add, be wary of "programs". look for things that actually help, facilitate change.

I have never found a anti-union person who had such strong courage of their convictions that they would refuse union-won benefits, such as 40-hour work week and paid vacation.

I was an computing professional for 25 years for one of the major oil companies and was always grateful when the OCAW union won benefits.

Employers are taking advantage of a near-depression labor market to lower wages.

You want to do well - then read this book. Then you'll do well. Otherwise, accept that you brought your own problems on.

I'm tired of this partisan hatred. It's all I hear anymore. Americans need to grow up and start fixing their problems. Enough of the R v.s D. It's rubbish.
