Americans Confused By Red Wine, Sea Salt

Slashfood:

Ignorance is bliss, but it's not very good for your health. U.S. News Health reports that 76% of 1,000 American polled agreed with the statement "wine can be good for your heart." Hey, the good news is: That's true, but only if you consume two glasses per day if you're a man and one glass if you're a woman. Otherwise -- and here comes the really bad news -- excess drinking can lead to all kinds of problems like irregular heartbeat, obesity, cancer, high blood pressure and even heart failure.

As far as red wine is concerned, if you can just drink one glass a day, as long as it's good for you, then you're ok.....however, if you have trouble stopping at only one glass, then it's another story!
Maybe two isn't bad, but that's not the idea.....!

I recently heard that regular table salt is white because it's been stripped of it's outer layer which has "anti-cancer" properties...interesting! I will now buy unadulterated sea salt. Who knew??? I like the taste of sea salt anyway. Now I know that natural salt is not white!

Americans are confused about way more than wine and salt. This is not news.

I think I'll go have a scotch, just one..........possibly two? That natural peaty thing does wonders for your mind.

Everything in moderation. Of course, excessive drinking leads to many problems. Who would take, "wine in good for your heart" to mean, "drink a gallon or two a day"? I think I answered my own question.... Americans. We're not very bright are we?
03:41 AM on 06/08/2011
Of course, we are not very bright because if we were, you wouldn't be seeing every hospital in the country filled with sick people. Many people would not be in the hospital if only they can think right and do the right thing -- health wise. Time to get off the bottles and the junk meals

We have an obesity epidemic in this country.

It is time to take personal responsibility for our health.

Reduce your intake of salt, sugar, and fat. Exercise a little every day even if it is only a walk.

You will feel better and you will save money on those doctor visits and prescriptions for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Kenz, you're so right! Let's not take "walking" too lightly! It does many good things for you..... a good brisk walk about 2miles long is good for your circulation, oxygenation, mood, digestion, etc, etc!! Good for everyone; especially good for diabetics, those with high blood pressure,
cholesterol, depression and so much more! The hard part is getting out the door. So put your sneakers on and if you're in Fl. as we are, just walk out the door! It's a habit that should have priority over everything else, then you'll do it. I also live in a "circle" which is 2 miles around so that's how I go.......hubby has diabetes so I drag him with me!! You feel so good when you get back home and don't feel guilty hitting the couch after a full glass of water!

Same confusion that leads people to think a a Big Mac, large fries, and apple pie are offset by that diet coke.
03:44 AM on 06/08/2011
And the truth of the matter is, diet coke or anything soda is so unhealthy. Coke especially diet coke, are making people sick, and giving them cancer. Instead of getting slim on diet coke, you are actually getting overweight and having bad health. I don't touch that junk

I'm glad they're saying wine by the glass and not by the ounce. I've got some really nice fish bowl sized red wine glasses. Not only do they really allow the wine to open and provide great aromatics, they also hold a hell of a lot. ;-)

In lieu of table salt, sea salt adds a subtle layer to the flavor in anything you prepare. Mac & cheese or a margarita. I was surprised, but you can really taste it. Good stuff.

you must try dark chocolate, caramel, and sea salt together. OMG . . .
(use the Ghirardelli squares) just a little salt will do it.

Nope. There is a difference. More than likely the trace minerals is my unqualified guess, and I don't use it for something utilitarian like boiling pasta. Get a tin and compare it for yourself.

From the linked article:
"61% believed, incorrectly, that sea salt had less sodium than regular salt"
http://www.slashfood.com/2011/04/26/americans-confused-by-red-wine-sea-salt/

From the source:
"61% erroneously “agree” that sea salt is a low-sodium alternative to table salt."
http://www.newsroom.heart.org/file.php/1788/FINAL+Research+Stats.pdf

In fact, sea salt does contain traces of other minerals, at least some of the time, whereas ordinary table salt is basically pure sodium chloride. In Canada, they distinguish by adding an s:

"The words "sea salts" (note the plural "salts") are acceptable for listing in the ingredient list. Unlike sea salt (singular), "sea salts" (plural) are a mixture of sodium chloride and other mineral salts."
http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/fssa/labeti/decisions/salsele.shtml

However, even the least pure sea salt is far from being "a low-sodium alternative to table salt".

Americans are only confused because A0L publishes every half-assed report by every questionable source instead of those that have gone through rigorous scrutiny and are supported by the CDC, HHS and FDA.

Nine in ten Americans couldn't find Afghanistan on a map of Asia either. Let's face it, at worst we're stupid and at best, intellectually lazy.

As far as I can tell, it's only Americans and maybe some Canadians infected via their proximity who even worry about this. Europe, including the UK, seems to do what people have done for millions of years: grow food, cook food, eat food, and also wine. Eat anything in moderation and, unless you are literally allergic to it, it's fine. Eat anything to excess and it's not fine. So freaking simple. Unfortunately, with major US so-called food manufacturers in the market in the UK now, the traditional way of eating--which often included pints of bitter and ale and still they weren't fat--is disappearing. These days, American exports are mainly harmful...and that includes the mindset that says you need to carry a calorie calculator in your pocket and complete details of all foodstuffs in your head. Just eat and drink in moderation, with appreciation and enjoyment, and stop worrying already.
